Should Prince chill out from releasing albums till he has something important to say? How many of you would wait 2 years between albums for something potentially amazing and well crafted versus knocked out in a weekend stuff like ONA?

HAH! This is a contraversial question!
I cant wait 4 Prince...I start experiencing withdrawals. And besides anything Prince says (2 me) that I can understand is worthwhile. &

I wouldn't say ONA was knocked out in a week; I think he put at least 12 days work into it

I wouldn't say ONA was knocked out in a week; I think he put at least 12 days work into it Besides, if previous posts are to be believed, ONA was a timely release for those who were clamouring for Prince to finally release a piano album. As a matter of interest, mostly everyone roaming the org has heard the 'Piano Sessions #1 & 2', going by the name of "Intimate Moments With Prince" available on bootleg only. Prince must have been aware that those sessions were roughly 20 years old when he released ONA.('session # 1 was from '82 and #2 was from '83) ONA can therefore be construed to be a kind of official commemorative release of those piano sessions from the "1999" era, so I don't blame Prince for trying to release a piano album with a similar vibe... . I'm sure Prince feels "The Rainbow Children" is the most important statement of his career.

This is where all the fruitcakes crawl out of their hovels and insist that Prince always has something to say. His words are wisdom itself…….
To be honest, If it avoided ‘messages’ like the indecipherable hogwash that was TRC I would gladly wait longer for a new release. Two years is pushing it a bit though… Just bring back the old days of an album a year ‘in a record store near you’… ONA sucked too….

No, but I wouldn't mind him releasing old vaulted material that wasn't always bogged down by what he had "to say."

I agree. And whilst on the subject of unreleased material from the Vault, I would dearly love Prince to release 'The Flesh' sessions from '86 in their entirety. Being mostly instrumental, this body of work would not compromise Prince as a lyricist in the eyes of those who prefer their music devoid of "indecipherable hogwash"... . Why is there a perception that an album has to have "something to say" for it to be good? Furthermore, I'm willing to bet some of Prince's most beloved songs were "knocked out over a weekend" or even over his morning bowl of cereal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I want something new every six months so the two year idea doesn't fly with me.

more music more music. if he has something important to say then release that album to the general public. US mpgmc members want a alot more music. thats why i pay $100 a years in hopes of getting more music. a song doesn't have to have a message for me to love it. Sarah - from the vault CD great song no message, call it a through away.. well through it this way! i want more!

What might be important to certain fans isn't important to Prince. Some of his fans want him to continue to act like the oversexed, explicit, horny toad he was during his 20s. I doubt that's important to the 44 year old Prince. The only thing he's obligated to do is release the discs to his club members within the stated amount of time. Or whatever else his club claims in black and white. He's released a ton of music over the past 25 years, there has to be a rest for him in there somewhere. He's human after all. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

You use the word 'potentially.' There's no guarantee that waiting longer periods of time will produce great records. And besides, when Prince decides an album is worth crafting meticulously, he puts the effort in regardless of time constraints. Rainbow Children is a perfect example of excellent music, production, artwork etc. One Nite Alone however explicitly says demo recording which suggests that he probably preferred us to listen to it as such. Similarly with Crystal Ball, there's a reason he prints bootleg on the cds themselves. I guess he just likes doing things his way, and that means not everyone's gonna be kept happy.

Wait 2 years? No way!!!
Prince does not have to SAY anything. Just the music alone would be enough...lots of times I don't know what he's saying anyway... but jammin' to the funk is FINE!!! Come on, Band!!! ............ . So...how's everybody doing?

2 Years for another Prince album? No way! I can't wait for my Cds from the club for ONA or the Xenophobia cds. Prince Always puts out a Great Effort and Always has Something Fresh and Exciting to say! Wait? Are you Outta Ya Mind? No Freakin Way!

To clear it up a bit, when I said "has something to say" I was thinking of being inspired.
I Would Die 4 U - vs anything on the Rainbow Children. Comparison? Its just an opinion, but his stuff lately has sounded to me like he's just going through the motions. 1999 - 1982 Purple Rain - 1984 [This message was edited Tue Sep 10 13:30:09 PDT 2002 by Tom] [This message was edited Tue Sep 10 13:31:44 PDT 2002 by Tom]

I can't believe that any of you think ONA sucks . I think it's great! It's a perfect sample of Prince's genius as a musician and it's beautifully composed. You all expect way too much from little man, shit I'm happy that he's still working many artists would have thrown in the towel years ago.

When I was shooting a ton of images for my photo classes semester after semester, I noticed I was running out of ideas and inspiration. Alot of my stuff was becoming bland, redundant, insignificant. Every so often throughout my college years I would chill out from my art classes for a great while and take nothing but ge requirements, completely step away from it. I had to do that to come back with a (pardon the hokey phrase) 'fresh eye'. I was wondering if its the same for musicians. Maybe.

I had to do that to come back with a (pardon the hokey phrase) 'fresh eye'. I was wondering if its the same for musicians. Maybe. Most definitely. It can happen in any artistic endeavor. It's the reason I brought up how long he's been at it in a previous post. I sensed burn-out with Prince years ago starting in the late 80s actually. In my opinion he didn't really hit a wall until the 90s though. Think about it; how many years in Prince's entire career has he not released new music? Once? Twice? The only reason he didn't do so in 1983 is because he was working on his first movie and the time just wasn't there to release a new album. And even when he's not releasing something, you can bet the house he's ALWAYS recording. It's his lifeblood. I sort of doubt he'd know what to do with himself if he couldn't at least record music. What he does best is CREATE. There were times that I used to just walk right past new Prince cd's in stores without giving it a second look, because I knew he was on cruise control. But having said that, I can't agree with you at all that TRC is uninspired. It's the most inspired work he's recorded in 15 years. The content (among one other thing) is what rubs most folks here the wrong way who don't like it. If he was singing about explicit sex I'd be willing to bet a lot more of his hardcore followers would love it. They're some of the same ones that always say they want him to "get dirty again." But I dont' expect anyone to admit it. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Seeing that I really loved ONA (knocked out quickly or not) I don't see a real value to him waiting. He has something to say whenever he gets in front of that mic & 99.9% of the time I wanna hear it...

In recent years, there have been several Prince albums that,in my opinion, are just not inspired. But,when you consider how long Prince has been making music and how much he has released,we can't really expect EVERY album to be a unique, groundbreaking, inspired masterpiece. I don't think 'ONA' counts as an album anyway, since it's basically just some piano demos he had lying around and was not meant for the general public.
