SportsIllustrated.com Head Football Writer Disses Prince

I'm a huge football fan at all levels and also a big fan of Sports Illustrated's head football writer, Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback column. Unfortunately, Mr. King decided to take a mean shot at P performing at halftime. Read the quote for youself.

1/14/07 http://sportsillustrated....ffs/6.html
"Good thing the NFL is promoting the Prince Super Bowl appearance so heavily. It would also be a good idea to promote some of his music, because he hasn't had a song any of the human race has heard since, oh, about 1999."
(Obviously, he's referring to the song and not the year)

I think that even though he's a sportswriter, he can't possibly have missed the buzz surrounding Prince's recent resurgence as a leading figure in mainstream music. And I'm sure much had been made of this among NFL circles when he was selected to perform.
I'm guessing he really enjoyed that joke of a performance by the Rolling Stones or the Snoozefest Paul McCartney put on a few years back.

So what do you think?
Every time I watch the other people news, I see a false picture of myself, another one of u. They try 2 tell us what we want, what 2 believe. Didn't that happen in the Garden, when somebody spoke 2 Eve? But I'm willin'....

That's not really a diss. It seems more like he's talking about all the biz conflicts. It's not like he said "He hasn't had a song since 1999" or that "he hasn't had a song worth hearing". Seems more like he's saying he hasn't had the proper promotion. And he's right.

He's a sports guy, that's probably the best he could word it.

confused That's exactly what he said. He said Prince hadn't had a song anyone had heard of since 1999 (the hit song)
How is that not a put down?

There's a difference:

1.He hasn't had a song.
2.He hasn't had a song that anyone has heard. The way it's worded could be that he's making reference to bad biz affairs, lack of promo etc... Just giving the guy the benefit of doubt. Chances are he'll have more to say on it.

album debut at #1 in 2006
biggest selling tour of 2004
what say ye about that?
if we based star value on hits
it'd be awful dark 'round here

Peter king is right on the money.
so what if p had a #1 album? it was short lived #1 album.
the fact is
his previous albums sold using his old popularity and some good pr moves.
just like mj doing billy jean million times, p does let's go crazy million times to sell his new records.
p is still living off of his old hits and old memories to promote himself.
3121 does not have any hit singles.other than hardcore fans, no one cares.
p cant generate any interest with new singles. he has to plug in some old hits.

3121 album did not have #1 hit single or anything close to #1 hit.
that's why it was short lived #1 album.

i like p but he can no longer pump out #1 hits like he used to.

prince is a musician. he's legacy will be judged based on his music which means hits. prince has shown that he cant no longer pump out great music that everybody can appreciate and not just hardcore fans.this means no hit single.
rolling stones still have #1 tour every time they tour so what does that mean?

Perhaps he has not had a hit on the charts you have been looking at. Musicology did really well for P in 2004. Without the giveaway he still sold a million copies.

Some of you so-called fans are worst haters then then the media. Is not like if you kept repeating this stuff it well somehow come true.

I am sure P is going to kick ass at the Superbowl. Dude puts on incredible performances and at this stage in his carreer he could easily half ass on stage but true to his work ethic he always brings it.

The Rolling Stones have not had a hit record in over 15 years. WTF are you talking about. Their tours do great just like P and no one bitches about it.

Exactly.

I wonder why artist like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, etc don't get dissed about not having a hit record in years. Or why no one says anything about them living off their hits.

I bet no one would have anything negative to say if Stevie Wonder was doing the half-time. When was the last time he had a hit record? Why does it seem like Prince is held to a different standard than anyone else?

I still stand by the FACT that Prince hasn't had a hit SONG since 1994. That's what the writer was referring to and me as well.

That said I'm sure he will put on a terrific halftime show. Saw him this weekend and he was in good form.

Typical ball scratching, sportsloving, 'manly-man' who has to put down men like Prince to defend his own brutish manner.

That being said...THE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES!! dancing jig

Well, he has a point. Prince hasn't had a hit song since '94, and all of his singles since then have done rather poorly. Does that mean they've all been shit? Not at all. But they have done poorly.

I like all the responses. Thanks everybody. I've been an Orger for a while now, but only posted sporadically. This is the first thread I've started. Hope the discussion continues!! smile

Back to the subject. Do you think opinions like Mr. King's are justified? - Remember, look at this from the standpoint of the general public and not the devoted fans we all are. wink

I've always liked Peter King but this seems like a stupid, uninformed remark to me. His exact words were: "Good thing the NFL is promoting the Prince Super Bowl appearance so heavily. It would also be a good idea to promote some of his music, because he hasn't had a song any of the human race has heard since, oh, about 1999."

How is this right on point??? I think a lot of people in the human race have heard his music and made it quite successful, especially when you compare his recent and current success to that of older artists who've been around as long as he has.

Besides, Prince doesn’t need the Superbowl to “promote” his work. Organizers of the Superbowl have been asking him to do the halftime show for over 20 years and he’s always refused, until now. Which is probably why they are promoting it so heavily because they know how significant this performance is even if Peter King does not.

Even though his opinion is meaningless, I hate it when members of the press make blanket statements about stuff they don't really know about and because they're the press it theoretically gives them instant credibility. Even if this is his opinion, he's a journalist and is supposed to be held to a higher standard and should know the facts when he puts his opinion in print and keep the hyperbole and exaggeration to a minimum.

Not like us on the Org biggrin we can say whatever we want and just make shit up! lol

I wouldn't give a damn what the man thinks. He is a human being and has his opinion just like I have mine. All sports (unless they are playing in the nude) interest me about as much as a damn opera because both things are equally as boring. I have never watched a Super Bowl before and I wouldn't be watching this year if Prince wasn't on it. In fact, I will only be watching the halftime show. After that, I'm changing the channel because the only men I want to see playing with balls are the ones in the gay porn movies. lol
