We are steadily approaching the 13th anniversary of Prince's last Top 10 hit, TMBGITW. Great song that proved, maybe for the only time, that Prince could hit it big without big label promotion. Great marketing campaign initially for the song, with the whole video contest and debuting it at "Miss America" when people still watched the "Miss America". The video kinda sucked though and Prince looked about as rough as he ever has.

The residual downside is that, from virtually every album forth, Prince released as slow jam as first single, often foregoing something upbeat that could have been a bigger hit.
All good things they say never last...

I love the bridge of this song.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

"Staxowax"(my personal fave of the mixes) popped on in Shuffle right when I got to this thread... music

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

The single version is amazing. The way the vocals are mixed and Prince's falsetti= amazing sound!

It had it's own unique charm. Plus it stood out from all of the other videos they were showing at the same time, there was something essentially "classic" about it.

Nobody understood his looks though.

The original is the best, but I will disagree with you bro. Those were the start of his shlock rock ballads period.

The multiple remixes and variations (remember 2Morrow from Crystal Ball?) were so lame that P should never be allowed to use a chord or verse from the song again (live or recorded).

Definately do get hold of the single version as its a lot better and different to the version on TGE IMO.

My fave version is on the Beautiful exp maxi single/EP as its just a little longer than the single version but still gets faded out way too early just as hes really hitting those high notes - is there a 12" verion out there??

Its still one of my fave P videos as i remember that period really well and was at college and saw him live that year, the part where the grandma/elderly lady gets up on the podium really hits me - anyone know if shes related to P?

She was a teacher (I believe) that was recognized in some fashion for impacting kids at her school, so P had her in the video as an exapmle of beauty.

The Beautiful experience EP was actually realesed years before the Gold experience CD. There were three seperate singles released from the EP. The first being "The most beautiful girl in the world", the EP version is slightly longer than the edited single version. The UK 12" single includes "Beautiful (extended club mix)" and "Beautiful beats" not on the EP. The second single was "Staxowax" and the third was "Mustang mix" both were the same as the EP versions. The US 12" promo and the US CD promo included a version called "Brian's mix". "Brian's mix" was a beautiful instrumental version played on the sax. The last version released was on the Gold experience CD. It's similar but different than the EP version.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

mad In my 5th grade class back in 95, I said that I had a crush on Prince and this girl that I once called my friend said "Prince?!...He looks like half a girl and half a rat man! Did you see his video? He's ugly!!" mad

After that I proceeded to kick her ass on the playgroud neutral
If you will, so will I

I told my kids (8 & 5) that this is the song Prince wrote about ME. biggrin My 5 year old totally believes--every time it plays, she says, "MAMA! This is your song!" My 8 year (boy) just smiles at me, enjoying that he's "in on the joke." Sometimes he tells me, "Mama, you really ARE the most beautiful girl in the world." lol I've trained that boy right!

Sounds like she had it coming biggrin

Love/hate relationship with this song myself. As prince compositions go, it's so basic it's almost painful. Kinda cheese he could write in his sleep.

but on the right day, it's annoyingly catchy.
"What kind of fuck ending is that?"
