Kind of cool (although very strange) that after all this time, Prince and Queen have some connection (other than the royal name). plus as i understand it, prince is a big brian may fan. [Edited 2/5/07 7:00am] i thought i sensed some kind of mash-up action in that queen intro music...i'll need to watch it again to remember what song i thought was mixed in, but i remember i thought it sounded like something from the gold experience...

impeccable and very soulful performance. i can forgive the white america-pandering medley seeing as he gave us anotherloverholeinyohead last week. seems to be getting ecstatic reviews all over the net too, which is great
also, the bit with his shadow on the large sheet was pretty great unintentional comedy when it made him look half the size of the mic stand.

The disappointed hardcore fans (all 100,000 of us) got a new song on Friday to download = "Guitar".
The 139,900,000 football fans watching the superbowl go a rip-roaring 15 minutes that showcased Prince's awesome guitar playing, two of his most famous songs and a track from his biggest (by far) selling album and three suprising but very good cover songs. In other words, for once, I think Prince has pulled a master stroke. It was like saying - "Hey guys remember me?" and everyone (hopefully) replying "Hey that dude Prince, he's actually pretty damn good. You know I didn't realise he could play guitar like that!" Now let's just hope Prince doesn't fumble/drop the ball but instead capitalises on this and moves very quickly to get a new album/new WORLD tour announced and out there! That said, PERSONALLY, I would have preferred the setlist to have been more like this (keeping in mind what I said above): Let's Go Crazy U Got The Look All Along The Watchtower Best Of U Fury Purple Rain [Edited 2/5/07 7:19am] 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

i thought it was an awesome performance. LGC and PR were no surprise, I expected that. My daughter asked me earlier in the day if I knew what he would be playing and I said no, but you can guarantee that LGC and PR will be played. I understand the hardcore fans wanting to hear something else, but this performance wasn'f for the hardcore fanbase, it was for the masses.
I did notice, like others, a few logistical problems in the sound, which I am sure had to do with the rain?? Third, the twinz..yeah, never liked em, still don't...to spastic for my taste...bu I do have to give them props for spinning around that stage in stileto boots and not falling on their ass Fourth..more of a question..for someone who was there, my husband is dying to know how the lightening worked. He kept replaying that part over and over. I told him I thought it was pyros, he is convinced it was digitally added to the tv performance. Someone who was there prove me right please! LOL Overall, Nicely done! Great Performance! Really enjoyed it! Oh, and yea, I agree, drop the rag P, it aint you hon!

and just to sum up the MANY news articles in my inbox this morning....one such article stated:
After Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction in 2004, the role had been highly controversially and sensitively chosen. It didn’t matter to Prince though, as he put forth the best halftime presentation in Super Bowl history. Even with acts like Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones preceding him in earlier years, Prince redefined how an artist should present themselves on such a grand stage...He didn’t miss a guitar solo, showing the audience what an underrated guitarist he is. While he is often credited toward his songwriting, critics and audiences alike both often abandon the fact that he is one of the most impressive guitar players currently active. Overall, it was a fantastic experience by an artist whose durability is just beginning to bloom.

I don't know how many of you listen to the Tom Joyner Morning Show, but Tom Joyner was praising Prince all morning long!
He killed me when he said that Payton Manning "needed to give the keys to the Cadillac to Prince because Prince was the most valuable player last night." perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

don't think he was lip synching...spotted a moment or two where he was late at the mike (during lets go crazy...walks of playing his guitar...then misses half the next verse cause he didn't get back to the mike in time) so that would have given it away wouldn't it? thought the show wa excellent,...far better than I'd expected...he really owned the stadium for 12 minutes. Think he definitly took this oppertunity for all it was worth. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

It looked digitally added to me. Not that hard to do. As long as they had a camera in a fixed position and pre-arranged where to superimpose it. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

I find it odd that in 41 years there has NEVER been rain at a Superbowl, until this one. I think God was on Prince's side and wanted it to be high drama. When the stage turned purple that took the cake!

It's hard to navigate a huge thread like this, and there ARE different aspects of the show that would be cool to discuss separately. i agree. i think the style of moderation in discussing big princey events like this always errs on the heavy-handed. i don't know if that's such a good thing. i understand locking up all the "OMFGLOL PIRNCE WAS ON THE SUPRABOLLS!" threads, but if there are topics that veer or digress or zoom in on one aspect of the performance, would it kill us to let 'em stay? I agree. We are already getting published reviews being duplicated because people can't be bothered reading through 4 pages of comments on the performance as a whole to see if it has been previously posted. An event like this needs to be split up, a sticky for published reviews as there is a sticky for pictures, a sticky for technical questions. For instance, the number of people asking over and over about the lightning (digitally added onto a single camera shot, sheesh, do people think we really control lightning on cue now or there is a pyrotechnic that looks like forked lightning?) and how come Prince wasn't electocuted (because he wasn't plugged into any electic equipment that might have caused a circuit between the power mains and a puddle, he had at most a battery pack to power the radio transmitter on his guitar which wouldn't be enough to electocute him. Plus if he had rubber souls on...) Of course the mods will say take this to the site discussion forum...

I have always been one to bitch when something was not very good, like some of the newer songs. But anyone who didn't like or think that his 14 min at halftime was awsome, should find the tallest building in their town and jump. I mean he played, sang, and acted like a fucking rock star!!! He didn't do rap karoke, he didn't sit at a piano, he didn't run all over the place to where u could not understand him, what the hell could some of you want?? For Prince to be 48 and really just have played his biggest gig ever, well thats as good as any of us here will ever see it! E.

my 2 cents and a question:
does anyone know the band lineup wondering who was the chick in the white performance was okay, not mind blowing like i thought it would be. i kinda figured he'd play lgc, pr, didn't expect the jimi or foo fighters song. maybe paying homage to their remake of darling nikki.

I still think the Brits performance was far better. Anyone who liked the Superbowl performance but hasn't seen the Brits should try and check it out, it might not have the stage, pyrotechnics, rain, atmosphere and occasion, but in sheer quality of performance it is far better and Prince's guitar work is sensational and flawless.

Howard Stern LOVED Prince SB Performance!!
Howard has changed his tune! Yet again For the last few years he has acted like Prince was well God. Then Prince didnt want to be interviewed for 3121 so for a year, he was sorta rippin on him. But now we are back to Prince being God Howard & the Crew were talking how amazing Prince was at the super bowl! He said he and Billy Joel are old school, they sing and perform 100% live! They said he was electric and they couldnt turn away. wow Fred on the show did say he thought Prince's Solo was out of tune, he didnt blame Prince, he blamed the guitar tech. But Howard went right back at him while they were playing the PR Solo and he thought it was great! Plus brought up the Pouring Rain. Howard also put it out there to Prince over the radio he wants to interview him, and promised he wouldnt ask about Sex or anything about JW if he didnt want to. A Caller brought up he thought Fred was wrong and the solo was great!!! He also told the Stern Crew Prince plays in Vegas every weekend. Howard said he so wants to see him there & also thought The Super Bowl Performance helped Prince allot in changing his image & he picked up allot of fans from last night performance.

yes you can. he wasn't hooked in anyway, he had a transmitter, right? plus the rain wasn't thát hard. i mean, it's not like he was under a wall of water pouring down. it was a mild rain at best. just enough to add a certain elan to the show, a bit of extra mystique to those fireworks and lights. i don't think that a single thing about the performance was not live Yeah, what he said. Seriously, it's easy to "waterproof" the electronics involved. The entire performance was live. I am MrVictor....

I thought it was a good performance. Could have done with out the doves on a stick and the "go go go" parts. Otherwise very entertaining, especially since they were playing in the pouring rain. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was surprised and impressed that he did more than just play a medley of Purple Rain album songs. The cover songs were cool and were great for a mass audience. And the rain seemed like it might cause a disaster, but actuallya added some extra mood that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

I think Prince did an amazing job considering the rain... He looked great and he sounded great & I truly enjoyed seeing him perform at the Superbowl.
He did LET'S GO CRAZY, BABY I'M A STAR, PROUD MARY, "?The best of you" (haven't heard this one before, but I loved it!) & the grand finally, PURPLE RAIN which I think was quite fitting for the occasion. He is truly a super star. I loved him in the 80;s and I'm even more in love w/ him now!! I have no complaints, well, except, I could have done without the twinz blocking my view of prince !! but I am totally psyched to see him live this Friday & Sat. @ 3121 in Las Vegas!! PEACE!
