I stayed up until 2 a.m to watch and record this and I´m quite happy with how everything turned out , Prince delivered like only he can, no matter how much rain was pouring down.
GOOD : 1- The fact that he showed up at all dispite of the heavy rain 2- kickass performance, a true professional, surely the greatest entertainer on this planet 3- I liked the Twins ...a lot ..seriously... 4. His choice of songs was OK considering it was the Superbow BAD: I think parts of Let´s Go Crazy ( the go go go chant ) were obviously prerecorded and that didn´t look too good because it made some people think that the show wasn´t live. Other than that, great performance....as usual. [Edited 2/5/07 16:06pm] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

why do we need JUST ONE thread on the super bowl performance ... like so many other "discussions" on this board ... i really think it sucks that we now have 11 pages of lil comments on this performance when some people just wanna discuss ONE aspect or whatever ... speak! i think it's silly that we can have a dozen threads on 'dreams about prince', 'sipping prince's booty juice' or 'prince mj and james brown on one stage!@'. yet if you would like to start a thread on the guitars he played during the superbowl performance, they go "eh already a sticky" wtf? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Agreed... I started two threads with newspaper reviews, and they were locked in a minute. I thought the sticky was for "our comments". Would be nice to have more specific threads about such a huge event.

Brilliant
I thought that the lightning was real? The rain made the whole thing really dramatic. 3 guitars in 12 minutes and I still get all teary at the opening bars of Purple Rain. I was very proud of his performance and at the end when he was bowing to the crowd I thought he looked a little overcome by the crowd's response.

Prince Rocks Super Bowl Halftime Show Feb 4, 9:12 PM EST The Associated Press MIAMI -- Phew! CBS got through the halftime show without a "wardrobe malfunction." The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing "Let's Go Crazy," but he didn't. Prince, who became a Jehovah's Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern's send-up at the '92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the game. Video: Check out the best Super Bowl ads The 48-year-old Prince, who rose to stardom in the '80s with his distinctive fusion of R&B, funk, soul and rock, once looked androgynous and produced songs that (lest we forget) drove Tipper Gore nuts (and made her a fat target for anti-censorship types like Frank Zappa). Musically, the diminutive, erstwhile prodigy from Minneapolis kept it old-school, rockin' the house with "Purple Rain" and other golden hits. He delivered one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows — ever. Consequently, he didn't come across as a painfully safe choice — or a has-been, the rap against the previous couple of Super Bowl halftime acts, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones. Alls I know is, the other people at the Super Bowl party I was at said it was a good performance, and they certainly aren't the kind of Prince fan I am. my two cents....its the Super Bowl halftime show. Of course he's going to play songs that the target audience would appreciate. If he played songs other than he did, you'ld be complaining and you know it. It wasn't the play for him to play "Guitar", or other lesser known songs. considering it was a 10 minute joint, I was satisfied. How cool was it that he played a Foo Fighters song?

Notice to all the so call fans who are expressing remorse over the song selection.
Last night Prince once again showed the world that he is one of the greatest performers of all time. He played the songs that made him famous and played songs that could showcase he fabulous guitar skills. He was talked about on every sports channel. The NFL is highly pleased at his performance last night. This will lead to Prince getting some highly deserved recognition and new avenues for him to give the music to us as fans . Be pleased for him and for us because 07 looks like its gonna rock!

Could someone please explain to me how Prince could perform in the rain last night and not be concerned about getting electrocuted?....I'm asking seriously..
I thought that that was always an issue back in the day...has technology improved so much that it's no longer an issue...?

Utter, utter class. Prince, that is. The game went down hill once, the Colts went in front - the Bears were literally powerless to stop them as their offence was so poor.
But that's all irrelevent - the musical/televisual event of the year was the half-time entertainment - how on earth he kept his balance (and seemingly remained dry) in those baby blue stilettos as the rain bucketed it down I'll never know. Let's Go Crazy's guitar work was wonderful - and the segue of All Along The Watchtower into (the Foo's - WTF!?!) Best of You, was blinding. He made the Foo Fighters sound good! Purple Rain was literally staggering; his vocals, the silhouette effect while playing guitar and the marching band were tremendous. Just WOW! He continues to set the standard. "Art calls for complete mastery of techniques, developed by reflection within the soul."

I sensed danger: the fact Prince was offered and took on the gig ; He played to a huge audience live around the world ; The rain , but all up He entertained and gained a lot of respect from people who would've never gone out of their way to check Prince out .
As a Fan I thoroughly enjoyed the Event. ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ...

The show was wonderful. I was scared he would do something stupid, but it turned out great! I was real proud of him. What a great showcase for his talent. Better so than the Hall of Fame because this has a bigger audience.
The rain falling gave the show a more dramatic feel to it. The lighting effects were awesome. The song selection was perfect. Why should he do any songs that only fans know and love? He was playing to a much bigger audience than his fan base. I did laugh to myself though when he did the Let's Go Crazy "go go go" part. I know how much most of you hate it. My 55 year old mom, even thought this performance was way better than Paul McCartney's, and she's a huge Beatles fan! Prince may put out albums that aren't that great, but he still is the best live performer EVER!!!

Seriously. Prince did not disappoint. I am so proud of him. The guitar work was phenomenal, though he sounded a little flat on the Purple Rain solo. I guess he was trying to play it a different way. He can use this performance to kick off another big year, just like he did with the Grammys and The RRHOF My only complaints: Too many covers (three). But done very well. No new songs, unless you count AATW, which could be a single. We should all feel damn lucky that Prince has stayed around this long for us to enjoy. I've been a fan for 26 years, it's been a great ride, and from the way he looked tonight, it'll probably go on for another 20. I feel the same way about it. And he really did a great show,he did what a the public expected and he did it whitout selling out or playing 2 safe. Mr.Prince....U're still the best! Love4oneanother

Great guitar work, especially in the rain. His voice was particularly clear and strong. No major mistakes and he played the hell out of his guitar! Thank god he *didn't* play "Guitar". I guess people expected the Purple Rain songs, but I would have loved to hear something else from his catalog...But this wasn't a Prince concert, it is the Superbowl halftime show. Nice job, Mr. Nelson! Well in all honesty, making The Stones seem comatose is not a hard feat at all to do at this point. They have lost all of their passion and drive for making great music and turning out a really outstanding performance anymore, especially Jagger. Green Day could blow them off of the stage at this point in time.

He really took it home with Purple Rain!!! It was an average performance until then and Let's Go Crazy was sooo predictable. Classic performance though, which many non fans enjoyed. The Twins are so lame.

I thought that that was always an issue back in the day...has technology improved so much that it's no longer an issue...? If you're plugged directly into equipment that is then plugged into power main, there's a direct connection and the water might make a short that electrocutes you. But Prince and his band were using wireless equipment, sending the music to receptors via radio waves. They have batteries on them, but they are not so powerful as to electrocute you, anymore than if you went outside in a rainstorm with a torch/flashlight. Still, I suppose there was a lot of cables around, so there's still danger, if you touch the cables or some metal touching the cables...

i don't really understand the disappointment because he didn't play
more new or obscure material. sure, another hit would have been too cool, like replace 'baby i'm a star' with gett off or alphabet st.. but all in all, we've had prince in our own private niche here for about 10 years or more. releasing obscure material n albums backed by less than glitsy hits tours (ona). so give him his moment in the spotlight, playing his hits. they're his hits anyway. not like he's up there night after night singing song that someone else wrote in the first place, like so many other performers do. he never used to go out there and cash in on his successes like this but why shouldn't he? he can be proud of what he's offered us since he started out. plus, and you can't deny that, we got a new song on the website plus those covers of dylan/foo fighters. so all in all not to bad a week for any type of prince fan, be it an obsessed one or just average one. plus, the audience at the superbowl was entertained. i hate to think of me being in the audience, and an artist like, i don't know, let's say bryan adams came on and did only new obscure stuff, lol. i wouldn't mind one or two surprises but i'd also like to hear him rock out on summer of 69 at that particular moment. and you just know that we as hardcore lunatics will get our share of weird prince material soon enough again through the new 3121 store. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Email This Story Print This Story Related To Story Universal Music Prince Battles Elements, Time Limits During Halftime Show Purple One Performs Covers-Filled Medley David Hyland, Staff Writer UPDATED: 11:57 pm EST February 4, 2007 MIAMI -- It wasn't purple, but the tropical rain that soaked Prince, and all of those inside Miami's Dolphin Stadium on Sunday night, was an unintended and probably unwelcome special effect for the Super Bowl Halftime show. Fighting the constant downpour, Prince bravely tried to prove you can still get funky while the rain is ruining your hairdo. "I only want to see you in the purple rain," he sang. "Don't it feel good?" From the vantage point of a TV camera lens blurred by rain drops, it certainly didn't. But, the soggy weather wasn't the only problem confronting one of pop music's most multi-faceted stars. Prince also had to do battle with the tight time constraints of commercial TV. As in past half-time extravaganzas, which have starred the likes of Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, Prince felt compelled to cram an entire set of songs into less than 10 minutes. It was a clashing medley, a rapid succession of truncated hits that ended much too soon. Amid fireworks, a glow-in-the-dark college marching band and twin dancers slithering around him, Prince's speedy performance was probably similar to his recent run of Las Vegas shows. But, if you expect the Purple One's new-found openness to the big-time glitz of Vegas is a signal that he's surrendered to '80s nostalgia, you'd be wrong. While his performance was bookended by his two biggest hits from the "Purple Rain" era, he toyed with audience expectations by running through some surprising covers during the melee of songs. He started with a bit of Queen's perennial stadium-anthem "We Will Rock You," quoted Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" (sped up like Ike and Tina Turner's version of the song), attempted a slow, bluesy take on Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" (and unleashed menacing groans from his guitar to suggest Jimi Hendrix's own famous rendition) and rocked out a couple of verses of a powerful rearrangement of the Foo Fighters' "Best Of You." Once, Prince sang, "I could never steal from another," but in this instance, the covers highlighted Prince's musical dexterity, the panorama of his influences and offered something safe and vaguely familiar to those macho sports fans who would've preferred to see Garth Brooks. It's doubtful that a performance of "Kiss" or "Peaches And Cream" would have gone over as well. Decked out in an aqua-colored suit with a black, silky kerchief on his head, Prince looked like a '70s Little Richard. He prowled along the damp stage -- shaped like the unpronounceable gender symbol that was his name back in the '90s -- frequently showboating with some guitar pyrotechnics that were intended to wow as much as the firework explosions that ringed the stage and the stadium. Prince took the most liberties with his guitar work as he played his own material. During "Let's Go Crazy," he powerfully strummed his Telecaster guitar and then digressed into a screed of notes and made faces like he was Carlos Santana. The guitar heroics continued when he strapped on a guitar shaped like his personal symbol and concluded with the thoroughly appropriate power ballad, "Purple Rain." Tossing off his head scarf, he howled into the microphone and then knocked it aside as he enlisted the doused crowd to sing along on the song's closing refrain. "Purple Rain" is no "Hey Jude," but the stadium of fans responded accordingly. Prince certainly fared better than Billy Joel, who also battled light rain as well as a few stray notes while delivering the National Anthem. His performance was just the first of many fumbles that plagued this Super Bowl. Dressed in a tuxedo, Joel gave a mellow but stately reading of the "Star-Spangled Banner." Had Joel not sung a few sour notes, his rendition would have been a refreshingly low-key interpretation as opposed to the gut-busting aria that so many other performers turn the song into. But because of the slipups, Joel's performance came across like he was out of his league. Prince, on the other hand, scored points as he confronted the elements. As uncomfortable as the rain was to perform in, it was a fitting backdrop and likely the only visual that the Halftime show organizers could never engineer for him. For More Info:

I thought it was a good show, especially in the horrendous weather, but without the rain it might have been better, a bit slicker with sharper performances and guitar playing. Certainly the raindrops on the cameras and drops in sound didn't help.
People make out he plays Purple Rain everytime he is on TV. That is simply not true, the last time he played it was at the Brits performance, before that a duet with Beyonce at the Grammies. Before that? I think you have to go back to the early 90s Arsene Hall show... Those 2 recent times he was basically 're-launching' himself, so there was a need to remind people of how good he was/is. Same with the Superbowl. He hasn't played Purple Rain on all these tv appearances for 3121 where instead he played album tracks... he didn't even play it when he did the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame performance... people just like to exaggerate. Beyond the 2004 Grammies he gave us tv performances of Musicology, Reflection, Dear Mr. Man, Kiss, Nothing Compares 2 U, D.M.S.R. He gives them strange setlists... then he reverts to a classic setlist for the masses and everyone is straight back on his back. Sad how quickly people forget. Playing Purple Rain 3 times in over a decade on TV over 3 years is overkill, is it? People are totally focusing on the old hits, the bizarre, uniquely Prince thing is playing the covers. Watchtower into Best Of You is a completely strange idea in itself; to then play that at this huge gig instead of some of your own songs... insane but brilliant as only Prince is. Playing songs simply on the basis of they're the most recent, new things he's come up with and happens to be feeling. Tomorrow he may be bored with those covers and never play them again. That's classic, unpredictable Prince.
