I know it is the name of an album but I hear that word used on some albums before NPS came out. Anyone know how long he had been using that term or what he meant by it? I think I heard it in '2 the 9s' the other day.

I guess it is a bit like 'New Jack Swing' that came out in the early '90s, basically a term Prince created to name his own brand of modern soul funk r&b. This 'new soul' being of course played by 'the new power generation' his new band of talented musicians at the time. 'New power soul for the '90s' sort of thing even though he started toying with the idea in '88.

I think the term 'Newpowersoul' was first printed on the Lovesexy album (in the form of an arrow) and is in the lyrics to Alphabet St.

plus 'new power' is mentioned at the beginning of Lovesexy (and Melody Cool from Grafitti Bridge which also has New Power Generation (the song).

On the NPG album 'Exodus' there is a tune 'New Power Soul' but it is just a jazzy jam really. Newpower Soul is of course the name of an album and track (again using the NPG moniker).
