Was Prince a mediocre singer?

My brother said this when we got into an argument about if Micheal Jackson was a better singer than Prince was. I said I think Prince had a lot range, he just didnt 'let it go' like Mike did. I said while Mike was the better dancer, and sometimes singer, I feel that Prince has more of a longer lasting career, because he changes with time. However, I feel that he didnt have a lot of range.Me personally, I feel that you dont have to have a lot of range to be a good singer. (or hit annoying high notes, etc.) I also feel that you dont have to know how to play an instrument to be a good artist. Perfect example: James Brown!

I don't know about technically compared to Michael Jackson, but I prefer Prince's voice. I feel like it has more emotion.

After studying voice in college, I've heard a lot of vocalists with dreamy voices, but I still count Prince as one of my favorite singers. I like his baritone voice better than his tenor. It has a much richer tone. If he used that voice more often, I think people would view him as a better singer. He can do some serious vocal pyrotechnics with his falsetto, but a lot of non-Prince fans are turned off by that. Overall, I think his merit as a singer comes from his flexibility, and the emotion he puts behind it. It is quite the instrument.

Prince's range is greater than MJ's. The both can goe HIGH, MJ more smoothly, but MJ cannot go LOW. His speaking voice is much higher than Prince's so MJ's low range is very grunting and unnatural sounding.
