It's not obviously about Prince.

It's not a dig at "faggots"

It's a dig at people who view music that way, like Number23 said

Wow, I've seen this vid dozens of times and never heard those words. I guess I wasn't listening carefully. I saw it as the blue collar worker's complaint against rockstars. They wear makeup, earrings, tease their hair, and live far more luxurious lives than guys who work physically demanding, low paying jobs jobs. It just doesn't seem fair.

i just remembered, doesnt morris call prince a "f" in purple rain

just checked

morris to the kid
"mother fucka, ya long haired "f""
when the kid puts him into the garbage in the alley way with his bike after appolonia performs at the taste

sorry, slightly of track, but this goes to show that that nasty word is used even in prince material

Prince didn;t write the script.

i meant to say it was used in the movie- saying it was "prince material" wasnt quite right- i know that doh!
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret

This was talked about b-4. I mentioned that during the video when that part of the song comes on there is a george michael look a like that is shown. I'm not saying that dire straits is picking on george michael (or even prince....u could even say it's about wacko jacko for that matter)

Oh, for fuck's sake. It's not a diss against whoever's wearing the make-up and earings. It's a diss against the moronic, small-minded attitude of the straights dismissing this person who chooses to act like a 'faggot' - who is accurately described as reaping the rewards for being true to himself and acting like the aforementioned faggot.

Have you heard "slow train coming" by Dylan? Its not too bad.

In the video there's a parody of a 80s band that looks like DuranDuran.

Personally, I like the words to the song (still one of my least fav Straits tracks though) and people who know Knofler know this ain't a mean dig at Prince, but it is funny all the same someone would say those words or something along those lines

What do you all think of it at the time? Did anyone notice it?

This was NOT about Prince. Prince wasn't even a millionaire when this song came out and if you knew anything about the time period, tons of musicians were wearing makeup and earrings. This song came out before I even went to California which was I think had to be '82 or '83. They weren't talking about anyone in particular, the song was basically capturing the view of your average blue collar worker and taking a dig at them - for instance they joke about rock stars looking like faggots, but they are richer than they are while they are doing shit work.

I know us fans like to think that all these people are walking around thinking and talking about Prince, but really, no one really thinks about Prince as much as we do. But let's see what happens after the SB.

The song came out in 85, after Purple Rain. Prince was a millionaire.

Exactly. Now, no one can confirm the reference is to Prince, but odds are, the man, Mark knopfler was writing about, may of been talking about Prince.

Oh well, my bad, I'm probably mixing it up with Bruce Springsteen. I'm still not feelin' the Prince diss. But this was the glam era of Rock when you had all those glam rocker's wearing full on make up. If anyone lived in L.A. at that time and picked up a Bam Magazine, it was like a episode of Maury of "She or He?"

Brothers in arms may well have outsold Purple Rain but that doesnt mean its any good. Hasnt Madonna sold more albums than Prince? Doesnt mean a thing! Knobfer is an accomplished guitarist with a terrible terrible voice, and the fact that he doesnt use a pick is neither here or there.
I thought the song was a dig at the generic prettyboy look of the time

Iam not bothered how many copies of any album has sold. But i just said it because sexydancer played the stupid "well where is he now?" card.

His voice is either hit or miss with people, I love it, as I do bob dylan's, who Mark was obviously inpired by in a few ways.

I try to play my electric without a pic, I find it tough personally.
