What Happend to Prince (and Prince fans) I'm sure this post will either (1) be removed or (2) be ridiculed -- but I gotta say it....
I remember the days when I'd go to Prince.org to check out what new projects prince may be workin on, what new songs are marinating, what direction prince may be taking. Now, Prince is a Vegas act, doing a charactature (sp?) of his former self for the mass-media. I just listened to Sign O' Times live concerts in Paris, MPLS, and Rotterdam -- that was fresh. His concerts used to do NEW material. I can't imagine him doing a show w/ new music like he did in 87, 94, shoot even 97. Now because of the lameness of prince -- prince fans on prince.org are relegated to a series of "what prince songs have you had sex to?" or "what would be your dream mix cd" threads ..... This is just my opinion, and no need to let me know how negative or out of touch I am or how futile my words are. Just wanted to put it out there!

This is another "Prince is no longer the artist he used to be" which is fine if that is how you feel.
however, I don't understand this part, "Now, Prince is a Vegas act, doing a charactature (sp?) of his former self for the mass-media" Can you give me some examples of Prince doing a caricature of himself in Vegas? I went to opening weekend and based on first hand concert reports I don't understand what you are talking about? Can you explain further with examples?

I don't get the "Vegas" comment either. He gets to do what he loves to do, which is perform music on a stage every week. He may not be jumping on a tour bus or a plane and going from state to state, country to country, or venue to venue; but, he's still playing live music to his fans. When he lived in Minneapolis, he would go to different nightclubs and perform @ random...how is this Vegas experiment any different? I haven't been to the Vegas shows, but for all I know, he might be playing new music. Would it make you feel better if he was performing all new material in a subway station? Personally, I don't care where he plays his music or if he's just playing the old material. Most of his older stuff is 10 times better than the crap that's being played non-stop on the radio anyway. He's not the young buck he used to be and all that performing and touring takes it's toll after a while. I think Vegas is just a way for him to slow down, but not completely stop. I think the only way Prince will ever stop is if he dies, which, sad to say, is how all the greats go out. Prince Rogers Nelson

Are you saying that the banal discussions on this site are a direct result of Prince's substandard musical output? That would seem to suggest that you're saying Prince could elevate the level of discussion on a fansite by producing superior music. If that's what you're implying, how exactly did you arrive at that conclusion? IMHO one issue has little to do with the other. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I am saying that superior output by prince would result in an elevated discussion on his music here.
here's what i mean for those who wanted clarification: Prince live today is but a charactiture (I really don't want to look up how to spell that word) of his former self. I base this assertion on the following: (1) he plays mostly past hits or songs, (2) those versions are not innovative (like during sign o times, with the current arrangements slicked down and almost corny (compare a current version of "strange relationship" to one done in 1988, 1994, or even 1999 -- look at the beats, horn arrangements, etc...). It's like he's going through motions -- Now granted, he goes through the motions better than anyone else right now but there's no edge, no newness, no expirementation w/ music. I recall the opening to Sign O Times in MPLS - - he said something to the crowd to the effect of "we're going to try something we've been working on out on y'all" -- it's far from an exact quote but you get my point. yea, this is another "critique prince" thread, but it's from a good place. I just want him to do something fun and interesting -- whether it be in the studio or on stage - and right now he seems to jsut be settling for what works -- slick versions of his old songs peppered w/ 3121 songs. Maybe that's all I can ask of a 50 year old musician -- but look at George Clinton and David Bowie!!

Straight from the horses mouth, Jatrig. There is a large number of orgers dat are takin shit, nothing 2 do with Prince. The completely different professional attitude dat Prince has, he would be embarrashed to what the orgers post.
Everthin isnt sex, without intellect it doesnt exist. Im sick of seein these sex obssesed orgers emarassin themselves. Listen if u dont know Prince yet, leave. The man is the music, as simpal as dat! Sam 8) Prince 2010 Good Luck for Future & Tour

1987 was 20 years ago, man! Seriously, name me ONE artist that you listened to in '87 that is still current and is still good. In the Spring of 2002, Prince went on the One Nite Alone tour. He played almost every single song from both The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone (album) with obscure songs sprinkled in and MINIMAL "hits". Wasn't that long ago.
