Funny (and quite long) review of under the Cherry Moon

Wow, what a read! It was absolutely hilarious tho! I'm not sure which remark was my favorite, but I like how they described Mary's fiance, Jonathan:
And aside from being a nerd, Jonathan probably also stands over five feet tall and wears men’s clothes and behaves at least somewhat like a heterosexual. So you can see that he’d clearly have no chance against Christopher.
I laughed all the way through the review, but was disappointed that the reviewer didn't enjoy it just a little bit. Surely it is no masterpiece, but UTCM is lightearted and fun. Not to mention, P was looking HAWT! I could watch that movie on mute, and still enjoy it. [Edited 1/15/07 14:34pm] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

Only half done reading, & I gotta step out. Well written and well informed, but I don't think anyone who hates Prince and is not familiar with his music should be watching - much less writing about - his films. That's like me trying to review anime, or a fishing show.
Did you notice that this guy doesn't mention the music once?

That's right ... not once ... at least ten times. "When it finally ends, we cut away and get our first Prince song booming over the soundtrack" "As a song a tad literally wails about Christopher Tracy’s Parade', he struts around and establishes himself as the local cock of the walk" "Suddenly the music gets all stereotypically eerie" "And so, after nearly three-quarters of an hour and for the first time in the movie, Prince actually performs a song number" "That night, Mary lies in her posh bedroom and turns on her transparent, neon-lit radio. (Which, to be fair, matches her transparent, neon-lit telephone.) I don’t want to shock the heck out of you, but she immediately picks up a Prince song" "He parks and begins jiving away to (what else?) a Prince song playing on the radio" "Discordant music plays as everything falls apart for Christopher" "During this the song 'Anotherloverholenyohead' is heard. .... Again, though, the song is truncated and plays under the action. One wonders what Prince thought he was going by ignoring the music so much" "Meanwhile, it’s here that we get 'Kiss', the one hit song to emerge from the film’s soundtrack album, 'Parade'" "Wearing his matador outfit and gaucho hat, shaking some maracas and accompanied by his band The Revolution, he sings one final song (perhaps the only one in the entire movie played all the way through) over the end credits" . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

This review was hilarious, though this is my favorite P movie. I found his descriptions of P and his antics in the movie quite funny, because its true. True if youre not a fan, or get his humor. Did you order a pizza ma'am? Prince- UTCM

I was 13 years old when this came out and my mother wouldn't let me see it in the theater. But when it came out on cable I watched it incessantly. Now, I'm 34 years old and I haven't seen it in years but reading this review brought it all back.
The sad thing is that everything the reviewer said is HILARIOUSLY true and on point. I hate to admit that our little P is extra "special" in this movie. There are a lot of funny comments in the review but among my faves are: Mary is annoyed to find her sorry romantic life exposed before this impish, irresistible Pixie of Love
and Mrs. Wellington waiting alongside her expensive car, as she attempts to assert her increasingly tenuous control over this pony di shetland di amore. I think those will be my new pet names for Prince, that lil Pixie of Love! or my lil shetland pony of amor. I'm sorry that's some funny ISH!!![Edited 1/15/07 16:57pm]

That's right ... not once ... at least ten times.. You know, I kind of had a feeling you'd have my ass for that! I've admired your dedication to accuracy around here, langebleu, and I regret that our first interaction has been a public chastising! But what I mean is, he never seems to talk about the music... nothing beyond 'a song called this comes on, a song called that comes on'. Understand, I'm very much in tune with this guy's feelings about cinema in general, but I feel that he is ill-equipped to appreciate Prince's greatest asset - the music! It's because of the music that any Prince movie gets made, and anyone with no real interest in or enthusiasm for music has no business going to see one. I believe this reviewer was looking for any film to pan and, hating Prince, decided to choose a Prince movie. I don't mind him attacking Prince for making a bad movie (a movie which I admittedly love), I just felt that a lot of the time he was attacking Prince for being Prince... like with the short jokes, for instance. If being short makes for a bad movie, then this guy's gonna hafta make some serious changes to his top 50! Whew! That's enough outta me...

OMG.
I love reading shit like this. Fans have a tendency to take our Hero way too seriously for their own good sometimes. There's a lot to laugh at Prince about over the years. Laugh it up, cuz let's face it: There's a reason it's embrassing to admit our love for him in public. Lil Dude's a great musician and my all-time fave, but still.... "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Haven't finished reading yet... but surely the fact that the reviewer refers to the first appearance of Christopher Tracy as an 'ultra-macho figure' means that this person cannot review a film for toffee. I've never seen a 'gay-er' male protagonist.

I say it to all my students... don't tell the story, the examiner will know the story. How recent is this review that the reviewer has to tell us what happens in the film?
Also, now admits that Prince's chartacter is 'gay' not the 'ultra-macho' figure earlier in the review... phew, that's a relief. Criticises the 4 and the U. I use one word: Dickens. Read Great Expectations. Also, fucking wake up, it's a Prince film, one 'by' him for heaven's sake... of course there's a 4 and a U.

God that got long..I couldn't even finnish it..I gave up!

The reviewer foreshadows Prince's influence... Robin Williams' Gay is a reference, I assume, to The Birdcage, Jim Carrey was stiil waiting at the Us Canada border in 85... This means that Prince had some 'effect' on the way in which oscar winners and established actors work... which, surely, makes UTCM a good movie.

God, I'm bored. What an awful, awful piece of writing. If I ever have difficulty in sleeping I know where to go.
Shall I be bitchy? Sounds like a person wants to be Prince... wishes they had the influence he has... wishes they're life didn't revolve around re-telling people the story of a minor release from twenty years ago.

He also states that the 'Girls & Boys" segment is 'easily the best part of the film" There's a whole bunch of similar reviews on the site also, equally as long and as funny.

I loved this film, knowing that it's uncompromisingly ridiculous. Extremely superficial, sweetly nauseating (at times) and very mellow-dramatic, but so what! There r plenty of beautiful pictures and truly amazing music.
Princes best film to date! It doesn't take itself at all too seriously. Very self-indulgent and humouress at the same time. I once watched it with a girlfriend, she was very attentive and yet couldn't leave off telling me what a terrible film it was, But she laughed a lot at the jokes and the general pomposity of the film. Eventually she had to agree that it was great entertainment. (Incidently, after the film we had some very good sex) We saw it almost 10 years ago and although she's not a p fan she still remembers the film with fondness. I think that reviewer needs to lighten up, apart from that he's quite often right. As for me I rarely watch any film twice, but over the years I've seen this one 3 times, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Do u know what I mean? utcm Kicks puple rains ass, terribly, although in some inexplicable way!
