I've been a fan since 1979. I had thought "Prince" was his first album until "Controversy" came out and a DJ did a Prince double-play....."Controversy/Soft and Wet". Then I went to the record store a few days later and bought "For You". Andy is a four letter word. | |

Yes, I was in high school at the time and I bouoght his first album based on Soft and Wet. I then saw his first West Coast concert ever at the Roxy on Sunset Strip right after his second album came out. He rocked it in bikini briefs and leg warmers and only sang in falsetto. The women in attendance swooned, but some of the brothers derided him with shouts of "Princess"! It has been such a thrill to see him progress and change every step of the way since then and was especially satisfying when Purple Rain hit it big and he became a superstar after so many friends had given me shit about being such a fan of his. Forever after that, they were always saying how I was the first one to clued in on Prince and had predicted his superstardom. To be honest, his mass popularity far exceeded what I had imagined but was most gratifying. I have seen him dozens of times over the years, including when he was booed off stage opening for the Rolling Stones at the L.A. Coliseum in 1981. He is a complete original and treasure. He has had an indelible imprint on my life, serving as the source of meeting my wife and the basis for the conception (night after seeing him show up at Maceo's concert at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip and naming of our only son (initials are NPG), who is now 2 years old.

I didn't get into Prince until the song Private Joy while in my freshman year of college. I remember in 79 not liking him too much and those I knew that did at the time later fell off the band wagon. With the album 1999 I became more of a serious listener and by the time When Doves Cry aired on the radio, he had my full attention. At the movie theater watching in amazement Purple Rain, after Let's Go Crazy I would be taken away into this place we know as Prince world ever since.
