Is this anything? Prince pays homage to white songwriters...

Is Prince coming back around to his pre-2001 self by covering songs that were written and/or performed by white artists? Remember the days when Prince released covers of "One of Us (made famous by Joan Osborne, written by Eric Bazilian of The Hooters)," "I Can't Make You Love Me (made famous by Bonnie Raitt, written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin)," and "You're Still the One (made famous by Shania Twain, written by Shania & Mutt)"? It's no secret that Prince has had a lifelong appreciation for the songartistry of Joni Mitchell and has worked with such artists as Ani DiFranco, Kate Bush, Sheena Easton, Jill Jones, Martika, and Gwen Stefani. And during the height of his commercial successes, Prince was releasing songs he'd composed and arranged with Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin, two white girls who worked closer with Prince as songwriting-seamstresses than anyone else before or since.

However, it seemed that after Prince and one of his childhood heroes, the legendary bass-slapping New-Translation-wielding Larry Graham, got to be real good friends around 1998, Prince started to shift his thinking about just what it meant to be hue-man. This shift seemed complete by 2001 when it was evident by who he worked with, the speeches he made on tour, the lyrics that would pop up in his songs, and even the musicians, athletes, and actors he'd highlight on his website.

So now, in 2007, I ask you... Did yesterday's Super Bowl halftime performance seem to suggest a return to Prince's old "white, black, puerto rican" "it's all about being there" attitude once again? Or did it mean nothing more than it's only rock-n-roll and he likes it?

"We Will Rock You" -- made famous by Queen, written by Brian May
"Proud Mary" -- made famous by Ike & Tina Turner and CCR, written by John Fogerty
"All Along the Watchtower" -- made famous by Jimi Hendrix, written by Bob Dylan
"Best of You" -- made famous by the Foo Fighters, written by Dave Grohl, et al

^Yeah, what SexyBeautifulOne said.

Covering The Foo Fighters was a great choice. They're a talented rock band with much respect for Prince. "Watchtower" was more in line with the Jimi Hendrix version anyway.
