I was intrigued in '78. I was hooked in '79.

In 1979, my sister was playing this song that sounded like a girl singing really well. Some of the lyrics I heard were, "I wanna be your mother and your sister too". Cool - nice song for a girl. Then I saw the cover of the album.
It was a guy. His name was Prince. He was bare chested and staring right at me. Now, I knew I liked the music, cuz that's what brought me into her room in the first place. When I saw who was singing it - I was intrigued even more. I was 14 years old. I was hooked by Controversy and a full fledged fan by 1999. Purple Rain changed my life. I was 19 years old. Everyone who knows me knows I am the biggest Prince fan they've met. It's a strange thing to be "known" for. I'm glad I was there from the beginning. It's been a joy to have had his music as the soundtrack to my life. I told my friends and family that when I go, there better be Prince music at the viewing and funeral... and not just the pretty stuff - I wanna "hear" DMSR and Let's Pretend We're Married, too. I think they've reluctantly agreed. So, I didn't quite make the 1978 list - but have been hard-core since 1979! |

I didn't hit this world til 85, so no. But had I been there? You can bet I'd have been first in line to pick up For You when it came out.

That's funny that is what all my friends say to me. They say if Prince makes an appearence in one of their dreams they tell me that he is represnting me to them. Which is quite flattering but I know it means because I am such a huge Prince fan and everyone knows it. Wish I was old enough to have experienced the early, early years his songs were so fantastic!

I can relate to what you're saying, cause i was about 7 yrs old in 1979, and my mom and dad would listen to Earth Wind and Fire or Rick James and others alot in my household, then one day my mom came home with these two albums, one was Patrice Rushen and the other was guy that had the spookiest stare, then when my mom played "Sexy Dancer" i was hooked. Given that i was super young and didn't understand what the words meant, i was still hooked for life.

I came in the world in '80 and I would definately been a fan had I grew up in the 70s.
My first exposure to Prince when I was six when Kiss used to get a lot of airplay. And also have another exposure by him a year later with 'You Got the Look.' Became a fan around 1991 when I heard "Gett Off" and since fell in love with his work.

1979
My aunt bought me an " I wanna be your lover" 45 (vynil). I was hooked with Dirty Mind that I couldn't buy until it had been out for awhile. I lived in a small town. We went to NYC and I bought couple 12" disco records. I had to hide the album inbetween them. I was 12 and my parents weren't to into the Prince thing.

Been a fan since 81. I was 8 in 78 and was not much into disco at the time. My older sister would play "I wanna be your lover" and I remember I liked that song even though it was kinda disco. MMMMM I guess I was a future fan back in 78 (or was it 79).

I've been a fan since 1982. I got hooked with the 1999 album.
It's still hard to believe that when Purple Rain came out, he already had 5 albums behind him.

B.S....I heard Soft and Wet on the radio and while it was still playing ran 2 the record store 2 buy the 45.
Although I know a lot of people that didn't get into him until the second and third albums, I was around, and YES I have been a fan since 78 'Soft and Wet', his big fro and all ...it's groovy baby

He was totally different than anyone else out and he actually seemed like he was one of the Sylvers from back in the day which I am sure most of you yungun's don't have any idea who they are but hey I was there in the beginning and I'll be here forevermore!!! But didn't see any videos back then just the music so it was not about image or look. By the time,IWBYL came along I was a stone cold fan and have tried to have everything he put out although I don't have a massive boot collection mostly because it wasn't like that where I grew up.

I was 9 when I heard Soft and Wet for the first time.

Prince fan yes! Since 1978 and I maybe one of the oldest emebrs in this group. But I got into Prince because I was working at a record shop in New Orleans, It was called Jams! I did all of the displays, and when I took his lp out of the box I told my friend-This guy is going to be big!! I remember it well, and I'm still a fan.
right now I'm listening to : Don't Play Me!

I've been a Prince fan since 1967 on a bus marked public school...basically it was me, Prince and group of unsuspecting political tools..
I dont know but i reckon our parents kinda wondered what it'd be like to have another color near so thaey just put us all on that bus together, I guess to eliminate the fear, it was cool but some days a real sacrifice Wake up children, dance the dance electric... there isn't much time.... who farted? ...was it u?

The first time I heard Prince was '79..Wanna Be Your Lover, I too didn't realize that this was a man singing, but yet I still found it intreging ( sp?)., then through the years until Purple Rain I would listen to Prince, but even though I was a little older during those years, but not quite old enough to work and purchase his music I really started forming a devotion for this fellow. After Purple Rain came on the scene in 84 ( I was 15 then)..oops..just gave that age thing away~ I became highly devoted to Prince then and have developed a different kind of respect for him and his music. Prince has evolved into quite a musician, man and legend over all these years. And I hope the future holds even more for our beloved Prince. Because of God..we 2 r 1~~Darren & Suzyn forever

I was censored at the time Prince appeared on the scene. So of course I had my big cousin buy For You for us to listen to. Us Catholic school girls were a naughty little bunch...I was hooked and my momma couldn't stop it though she tried...My first real boyfriend was a fan too..I still have my dubbed Dirty Mind and 1999 tapes...I saw his 1999 concert with my girls and almost fainted when the bed came up...International Lover sigh....
