so am i dumb for not noticing that in both songs he is talking about the the devil?

the "One" in fury refers to the woman (who is the subject of the song).

Yes, that is right. Or to put it another way, next to her even hell does not possess fury like a woman scorned. Over and over in the song he says 'ain't no fury like a woman scorned' nowhere does he go onto quantify it by saying 'except the devil'. Besides, Prince would be highly unlikely to call the devil 'the 1' since it would imply high status, like 'hey, he's number one in my book'.

Exactly, when he refers to the devil he feels he has to quantify it with 'evil' or 'wicked'. That's why '1' on it's own does not mean the devil in this case.



You don't think you use reasoning when you interpret? Of course you do, to interpret something you don't understand you have to reason out the problem, ie, use logic.
