I've been playing it regularly since it was out. It may not be SOTT but it's a lot better than most of the stuff he's done recently. I'm ready for the next one, though...

Nothing more. But then when I play it again after a short brake, I realize that the album is more than "ok". Not one bad song. To me Fury, for example, is a song that deserves more recognition than it gets. It's really powerful. And The Dance makes me speechless. That song is so beautiful, passionate, gripping. When he starts to scream, that's it. I get teary eyed. Pure PASSION. That's when I get a little annoyed that Get on the Boat comes right after. It's like, take it easy man, you got me all mushy and crying and now you go on like that... Let me calm down! Kinda like when that so beloved (ehem) song Mr. Happy comes right after the tremendously beautiful I Can't Make U Love Me. It ruins the mood. But Get on the Boat is a better song than Mr. Happy and after a minute or so I forgive him and start dancing along. lol.
You know I never thought of it that way, and perhaps that would have worked very well. Could you imagined if he would have ended the CD with the Dance? You're left captivated and breathless and just like that it's over. exactly All of me I give 2 thee down at your feet

I think you should get the "chuch" fan..and bring a picture of the "chuch lady" with you...you know...just in case..for support and all... I just found out that one of my nieces is crazy about some of the tracks on that cd, so I gave her one of my extra copies.

If there is one...they'll have to have the EMT there with some stretchers..because if he does that scream...it's going to be some drama...I'm not kidding... They'll need to have a couple of these available for all the screaming and fainting women..... "Just one?..Naaahh..we'll need at least 1,000 of these!..." They could give out pamphlets before entering the venue to fans to show them how to help the EMT guys when carrying out all the fainting women...: EMS worker #1: "Come on breathe...that's right breaattthhhhe.. see she's okay...look at the smile on her face, she just got a little princified that's all...must've been that scream again from "The Dance" song on the 3121 cd..yep..looks like that's what it was..matter or fact, I gotta listen to that cd when I get home tonight...it's a fantastic cd, have you heard it yet?...EMS worker #2: Not yet, but I'll be picking a copy up tonight" If that doesn't work..and the victims become "Princified"..then get the "chuch" fan...a temporary saving tool... "The 'Chuch fan'...it works...sometimes.." If all else..then get the "Chuch lady"..dial 1-800-pls-save.. "I know...I know..it's not fair..it just ain't fair sometimes..lawd help us all....(sigh).." It's nice to see people appreciating the album for what it is: A GREAT POP ALBUM!
He didn't set out to make 1999, Purple Rain, or SOTT again. The album sounds very contemporary without becoming stale due to his willingness to try different genres. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Well, I don't know about it being classified as just "Pop" because it has a little bit of everything, it's more like Gospel/R&B/Soul/Pop/Rock..a little something for everyone.: These tracks here are most definitely a mixture of Blues;Gospel/Spiritual;R&B/Soul: Satisfied - Blues/Soul Get on the Boat -Gospel/Spiritual Black Sweat - R&B/Soul Incense and Candles - R&B Beautiful, Loved and Blessed - R&B/Soul The Word - Spiritual/Gospel Love - R&B 3121 - Funk ..the only tracks on that album that I would classify as "Pop" is The Dance /b] [b]Fury", can be classified more as Pop Rock [Edited 1/15/07 8:24am]

True. I guess when I look at the term "pop", I view it in a braoder sense of the word. It is more like Musicology in "pop" terms than say Rainbow Children. I guess it is pop in the sense of blending different styles together successfully and haveing more mass appeal. Conversly, Rainbow Children was very insulated from anything else out there when it was released. That was more like a Prince vaniy project/concept album, so its sound appealed to a smaller segments since it was void of any real dance track (1+1+1=3 can not equal Black Sweat) and had a more narrowly defined concept. For the people who DON'T like 3121, care to explain why? I just don't understand how people could NOT like this album.
Personally, it way tops anything he's ever done before, and I doubt he'll ever release an album that I like as much as I like 3121

It's funny that you started this thread, because I was ROCKIN this CD in my car last week. I vacillated between a self-made compilation of songs from The Work (I love the song Donna!!!) and this album. 3121 is a great album. When I first listened to it, it didn't hit me for some reason, But after that momentary lapse in consciousness the funk woke me up. I LOVE this album. I play it straight through. THANKS P for another great listening experience. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

It's a good album, but the middle tracks are what make it hard to pick up and play.
I really dig 3121-Black Sweat, but then Incense & Candles-Fury just don't work for me. Fury in particular just sounds castrated compared to the version he unleashed on SNL. Luckily, The Word is brilliant, and all of the songs that follow are excellent. I'd give the album a B, and I think its reputation will improve among fans as the years go on. I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Wow... 3121 getting all this love... Kind of strange the hate that it attracted for quite a while... honestly, I've been loving it since it came out... I thought both "Te Amo Corazon" and "Black Sweat" were classic videos... Two of the best he's ever done, as I've never been terribly impressed with his videos...
I'm not sure if 3121 would be in my top 5, but most definitely in my top 10 and the only other Prince disc in my top 10 since 1995 would be The Gold Experience. 1. Sign O' The Times 2. Lovesexy 3. Parade 4. Purple Rain 5. The Gold Experience 6. 1999 7. 3121 8. Controversy 9. Diamonds & Pearls 10.Batman [Edited 1/17/07 21:10pm]
