A 'Purple Rain' 2-LP set?

In the first or second issue of Controversy magazine, they claimed that,at an early stage,Prince's 'Purple Rain' soundtrack was originally planned as a 2-LP set.And in the 1990 edition of Per Nilsen's 'Prince:A Documentary" book,it states the following information : "At an early stage, the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack was planned to be a double album.A two-LP acetate (test pressing) was made containing 23 tracks." The 2-LP set reportedly contained these songs...

"Let's Go Crazy"
"Take Me With U"
"The Beautiful Ones"
"Computer Blue" (long version)
"Darling Nikki"
"2 Late Darling"
"G-Spot"
"Land Of Paradise"
"17 Days"
"When Doves Cry"
"Electric Intercourse"
"I Would Die 4 U"
"Baby,I'm A Star"
"Take All 4 Granted"
"God"
"2 Many 2 Soon"
"Erotic City"
"The Loser In Life"
"Father's Song"
"My Special World"
"Untitled Instrumental"
"Jamming Til The Dawn"
"Purple Rain"

This information has been verified as false and when you think about it,there is no way Prince could have fit 23 songs in the movie (not to mention the Time,Apollonia 6 and Dez Dickerson's "Modernaire" track). But if those unfamiliar song titles really DID exist,we would indeed "Go Crazy" searching for them...lol...

What are your thoughts on this rumor?

I know that two 80-minute CDs aren't enough to hold all the "Purple Rain" songs if you include all the extended and unreleased versions (in place of the released versions), B-sides, instrumentals (God, Possessed (maybe the vocal version), Father's Song), the unreleased "Electric Intercourse," and any other songs in the movie by Dez, Apollonia 6, and The Time. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a "Purple Rain Uncut" release in 2004, marking Purple Rain's 20th anniversary? It'd have to take up at least 3 CDs, and be released by Warner Brothers, right? But as Prince's biggest selling album, they should be able to make some good money from it, and I'd sure like to hear some quality versions of "Electric Intercourse" "Father's Song" and the "God Instrumental." How about that trippy song he plays for Apollonia in his bedroom? And maybe some of the score music (with dialogue) as segues? A crystal clear digital copy of the full extended version of "Computer Blue" would be a dream come true, eh?

No doubt! And,as a bonus, you could also add the "Modernaire" song by Dez Dickerson, and the unreleased song "Wednesday",which Jill Jones was supposed to sing in the movie.

It is no longer a rumour. You say yourself that 'this (mis)information has been verified as false'.

Where did you "hunt" for these missing tracks? Under your bed, behind the dresser, in the couch cushion?

I believe there was talk of a two lp release at first - it was to include The Time & Appolonia 6 songs. I assume some wiser person saw the potential of a single lp with Prince & The Revolution tracks only. Seemed to work.

I would love to see a new PR album featuring these songs. Given their current relations, i only foresee the b-sides and Time, Appolonia, and Dez songs being released on a new CD. But even then:

The official Purple Rain album, 9 songs+

17 Days
Erotic City
Another Lonely Xmas(although i don't think this fits)
God(only the gospel version-the instumental sounds like porn muzak now)
Modernaire
Sex Shooter
Jungle Love
The Bird

That's a pretty good album. If P allowed Electric Intercourse to be added, the extended Computer Blue, and G-Spot, i'd be very happy.

Let's hope something comes of it.

I remember that rumor...
I too tried to get hold of the songs that didn't exist.

I remember that years later Prince himself stated that he never considered making Purple Rain a double album at any point, it was always going to be a regular single lp.

In 2004 it will be Purple Rain's 20th anniversary. It would be great if they could release a special edition 2CD set.
They could include the long versions of songs like Computer Blue and Let's Go Crazy, as well as the tracks by Dez Dickerson, The Time & Apollonia 6, and maybe incidental music and instrumentals like God & Father's Song.
