3121 review you may have missed Scroll down near the bottom, it is a mp3 of a show called Sound Opinions. Boy do they get it wrong about that horrible album.

I agree. The review is consistent with the other reviews. The only thing I don't understand is that they said he tries to do too much in fitting too many different types of genres. I thought Prince always did that. | |

Prince always merged different genres together to make his own sound, yes. But typically, he used to have very cohesive albums that were very similar in overall feel. Having upbeat songs and ballads on the same album is normal. What this reviewer is saying is that Prince tries to cram TOO many different song variations on the same album. He tries to cover rap/Latin/dance/orchestral/funk/rock/pop/gospel which is too much. There's no cohesive "tone" for the album. Compare it to the album and you will see what I mean - he covered a lot of area on that, but they all fit together. Even Musicology was more cohesive than 3121. Prince's albums lately (not counting TRC) seem to have a "compilation" feel to them, as if he raided the Vault and just assembled an album. | |
