Prince albums come in pairs

OK I am sure this does not apply to every album but it struck me that most of his albums tend to stretch over two sets . For example 3121 and musicology do kinda fit together but then so does, D&P and Symbol, ATWIAD and Parade, SOTT and Black Album, TGE and Emancipation, Contorversy and 1999 and For you and Prince. So the odd ones are Batman, Graffiti Bridge, Rainbow Children and Purple Rain. Anyone else think so or amI desparately squeezing something out of the emptiness before his next album? lol

I think Controversy is more like Dirty Mind's sister album. shrug

The Rainbow Children kinda goes with N.E.W.S...kinda.

Yeah I think a lot of his albums pair up well.
I always put TGE together with Exodus & Come.
Lovesexy with The Black Album.
Old Friends 4 Sale and Chaos & Disorder
make up the 4th & 5th cds for Crystal Ball.

I agree with this theory...It usually seems as though most projects span at least 2 albums until he moves on to the next thing. I think that Lovesexy and Black Album fit better than SOTT and BA. I think that Batman and Grafitti Bridge are cousins in a way too. I also liken COme and TGE instead of Emancipation, which I think rightfully sits on its own.

i've always felt the same way about these albums in particular...
they don't exactly sound alike, but do share A LOT of similarities, at least in style

for you & prince
dirty mind & controversy
1999 & purple rain
around the world & parade
diamonds & symbol
musicology & 3121 (tho a MUCH better album!)

He likes to flesh out ideas. It's even more interesting to throw B-Sides in the mix to distinguish between projects. The second album is usually the best developed musical landscape (except Dirty Mind/Controversy).

You're right, the second one is usually better. Even Controversy is more fleshed out in terms of style & sound, tho I like Dirty Mind better on the whole.

i rememebr thinking there was some pattern to covers... like one would have a clear photo of prince the next would have no picture... like for you (smuged) Prince (clear) Dirty Mind and Cont (both clear) 1999(no picture) PR (clear) ATWIAD(no pic) Parade (clear) SoTT (blury) Lovesexy (clear) batman (None)

This is the way I've always seen it:

For You and Prince (which was For You top 40 like)
Dirty Mind and Contreversy (which was Dirty Mind for the radio)
1999 and Purple Rain (which was 1999 gone Motley Crue)
Around the World In a Day and Parade (which was ATWIAD gone gay and french)
SOTT & LoveSexy (which was SOTT stripped down)
Black Album and Camille (which never got released but was the the softer side of black)

As for his newer work

They are all afterbirths and abortions of Emancipation. biggrin

Cool topic.

It fits in with his whole Gemini twin thing.

It takes two albums to express himself.

Most definitely! It falls apart after The Gold Experience, but it works:

For You, Prince
Dirty Mind, Controvery
1999, Purple Rain
ATWIAD, Parade
SOTT, Lovesexy
Batman, Graffiti Bridge
Diamonds and Pearls, Symbol
Come, The Gold Experience

Definitely paired. nod

nawww black was aborted... but i often wondered... what prince thought about the Black Album coming out after all? i am pretty sure he could have stopped WB (there was a case were some famous singer did an album and the record company tried to release it but he sued them and won)

agree,I always thought I was one of the few who felt this way about his albums.
ATWIAD and Parade are the least obvious, but still they are a good pair.

I also would add;Rainbow Children and NEWS.

I forgot

Emancipation & Crystal Ball. Of course it could easily be argued that CB has nothing to do with Emancipation. But I see them as six sides of the same coin.

Two 3 record collections. Disc one is funky & pop. Disk 2 is more adventurous in a tonal sense. Disk 3 is less defined (and the worst, IMO).

But they are tied together by their differences as much as their similarities; these albums show the 2 sides of Prince.

Emancipation is unified, CB all over the place. Emancipation is subtle, CB is in your face. Emancipation has some depth, CB is very surface. Emancipation is boring, CB is exciting. Emancipation is too perfect, CB not perfect enough. Each album is everything that the other isn't.

Interesting view though i have to say that I still consider the CB of the late 90s to be more of compilation than an actual album, always wished that he realeased the original.

definitely, if he'd released the original 3 record it might be related to Emacipation more by similarities than differences?

To me Graffiti Bridge has always seemed as the natural extension of the concepts from Lovesexy. Batman was just something that got stuck in the middle and interrupted the flow. That was Prince's spirituality I really got into, before Larry.

I also thought the same thing...he has a certin look / theme for two albums. The Purple Jacket 1999 & Purple Rain. The NPG Look for D&P & symbol.
