She Loves Me For Me- Disrespectful?

Im curious...does anyone else think that this song is disrespectful to Prince's past relationships? Its just the way he emphasize's "This time"...as if his past partners *didnt* love him for who he was...but for other reasons...

anyone hear me on this?

You know what? You are right... it does seem like he was calling all the other women a bunch of money hungry, tramps who only wanted him for fame, recognition and cash, whereas the new one is a true love who cares about him rather than material possessions or recognition.

Good point.

I can feel you on this in ways. Making it like the others were stuck on the things that he claims this one who loves him for him is not. But I see it basically as an ode to his new one who likes everythiong abuot just him as a person..not neccessarily meaning that others didnt as well though. He may just be stating it with this one in song.

He's probably right, poor guy. What I don't get is the line that he doesn't have to write a bunch of songs anymore, because she loved him for who he is. But writing a bunch of songs is who he is.

I do not think it is disrespectful.
I think because of where he is in his
life and his career and his lifestyle
changes, he felt that at last someone
loved him for the person whom is becoming.
Mani may be one of the only people who
did not criticize him for the controversial
choices he has made in the past few years,
because her love for him made her simply want
him to be what HE wants to be.heart
So...how's everybody doing? smile

especially disrespectful considering the way he's rumored to have been such a player to the women in his life - two at a time and all, like even when he was married to mayte mani was 'in the picture'.

and how can her resent women who enjoyed his toys when he offered them to said women? his lyrics say as much (put your shopping shoes on baby, it's courtin' time)

and yeah, 'this one' is not exactly complimentary, it seems like he doesn't much care for 'this one' if he spends more time talking about the others who went before

imo

Perhaps a little, but I think along the same lines as rdhull, it's more about the present than the past. Kinda like Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife. He references the past, but it's not the focus of the song.

WHO;S 2 SAY ITS NOT JUST A SONG. MAYBE IT JUST ROLLED OFF HIS TONGUE THAT WAY AND MAY NOT B A FACTUAL STATEMENT.EVERYTHING A PERSON WRITES DOES NOT MEAN HE STANDS AND FALLS ON EACH LYRIC OR 4 THAT MATTER EACH SONG. BABY FACE SAID I'LL BUY YOUR CLOTHS AND COOK YOUR DINNER SOON AS HE GETS HOME. BUT HE SAID IT WAS JUST A SONG.

Appearantly because Prince is not allowed to say anything even remotely critical about anyone he's ever worked with or dated. neutral

Right! if he feels that way then he can write a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it go... Seriously, its his life his past relationships and basically his perogative and that is that. No need for anyone to feel disrespected, all those women, and I do use the term loosely, have gone on with their lives. Most of them can currently be seen on E! bedhopping with notorious losers. And that says what?

I find the line, "this one i can take over my momma's
house, and i don't even have to worry what goes in
and out her mouth" somewhat offensive towards his ex.
I'm sure that was pointed straight at Mayte, seeing how
she came off as, well, dim, on Oprah.

The song, as a whole, i don't find that disrespectful.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Ive never thought of it this way. I guess it could be construed as disrespectful by his previous partners. I think that People such as Prince face the dilemma of women only being interested in them for material gain/fame etc.The downside of being famous. Prince seems like someone who is not gullible in that respect, not everyone's motives are honourable unfortunately. Maybe he feels that Mani is genuine and that the others were not? not sure.

The truth hurts sometimes! Hey he's got feelings too(no matter what you might think). So if this is how he feels, then good for him and fuck the rest...

I think She Loves Me for Me, is one of the most songs without feeling that Prince has ever written.
.Play some of his other songs and as he sings you can feel what he is singing. In this song I can't feel anything.

Does anyone else see this?

Don't kid yourself, she maybe just as money hungry as the rest of them.
What other girlfriend of Prince's besides the house in Spain has Prince bought a 5 million dollar house for?, in their home town?, and remember Prince moved from Mn, a place that he loves.
I hope he is right, I hope She does love him for him.

I respectfully disagree. I think you are interpreting feelings of pain, feelings of eroticism, or even feelings of desire as the only feelings Prince is capable of displaying in a song. The beauty of She Loves Me for Me is that Prince is finally singing from a source of contentment. Even with a lot of the beautiful love songs that Prince wrote about Mayte, he seemed to be so elated that he was probably bordering on fantasy. I mean, through song, Prince actually called Mayte his "saviour" - talk about putting someone up on a pedistal... it doesn't get any higher than saviour - especially not for one who believes in God. Many of Prince's songs throughout his career have dealt with Prince longing for something. In She Loves Me for Me, he has found what he's been longing for. Very rarely, if ever has Prince sung from a source of contentment, and it is those feelings which come through in the song.

Yeah, I thought about that Skletonkee, but don't you think he had to come out with something for his 'wife to be' being that he said and did so much for all his former lovers? I think that's a strong powerful statement and says alot. But I think he did that also on 'Friend/lover/sister/mother/wife, when he says 'your're the only love of my life', and everything else he says before and after that!

I think he just wants to make it known that this is it, that this is the one. It ain't his fault that it wasn't what he thought at times. All in all, I think all those lyrics are really sincere and true. That's what he thought and felt at the moment(s), and you sense that in the songs, which makes them all the more beautiful and wonderful to listen to, so I sincerely hope that this is it, right now, for him.

DISRESPECTFUL? no. i think he's saying some or all of his past loves used him. u know: money, sex, to get famous(which 4 most didnt work out). that now, he's found one who "loves him 4 him", not what he can give THEM, or he's saying that he's looking for his "ideal". that "this one" will love him 4 him... it goes along very well with 1+1+1 is 3. (the theocratic order- this is how it's gonna b). he's saying this woman will except him as he is...without the frills he usually had to put on for his "other" women. a more simple, obedient type, if u will, someone he can have as a wife/partner who he can b proud of and himself with, not a woman who will tell him what 2 do.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses

I agree with abucah and it is a very "feeling" song. Notice how all of his gals seemed to have wanted money and fame? Well Manuela is not like that it seems. Just because he bought an expensive domain for "them" does not make a difference, he just had the money to do it. My husband bought a very nice house for "us" because he had the money to do it, I did not have to drop a dime on it. He also tells me quite often how much he loves and cares for me, he says I am different from all the rest and the one who truly loves him and accepts him for who he is and he is right, I do.

Being disrepectful to past loves through this particular song in Prince's case is not what I think he is doing here. He is just voicing his feelings about Manuela in a nice loving way. I mean none of his other relationships have lasted because those other women were obviously "not" the one for him. If he feels Mani is the one, the "true" one, he has every right to express that love any way he sees fit, the others from his past don't matter. Personally I am very happy for them both.

NO, it's not disrespectful at all.

When you feel like you've found the one, it's natural to think "THIS is the love I've been looking for." So what's wrong w/ expressing that?

Maybe the others did love him for other reasons. Maybe their love was true but he couldn't see that at the time. Maybe they didn't love him at all - who knows? fart
