acknowledged! I think the parade album is one of my favourites.
A very fine non-aggressive thing.

a bit whimsical on the surface, but when you listen more often to this song you can only admire Prince vocal acrobatics on it, and especially the beautifull vocal harmonies offered by Wendy, Lisa (and Susannah?).

Next to Kiss, the best track on Parade...very nice

and, name me any other mainstrain artist from the eighties who dared to put a song in 1920's french chanson-style on an album? lol

I had a thread about a year or so ago about this and most fams had such disdain for the song.

As much as I like the song, I still think it's the weakest thing on the whole album.

to be honest rightousone, i think this song is in fact better then the song that comes before it, Mountains.

Mountains is a catchy, pompous, solid song, but the kind of song he can create quite easily at any other time. A song like Do U lie, is Prince letting go of his own 'safety net', diving into an experience, taking a risk, letting it all flow.

I even dare to say that these kind of songs brought him to disband the revolution. Wendy and Lisa seemed to push him over a kind of edge with their compositational input, leading to surprising results as Do U lie (and also Sometimes it snows in april, for example).
I think Prince was affraid that he would lose the control over his own sound, and that he felt vulnerable because of Wendy and Lisa 'pushing' him into new, more nuanced, less obvious terrority. Resulting into the disbanding of the revolution, and Prince trying to giving direction to his own music again.

Fortunately the influence of Wendy and Lisa shines trough on many tracks on Sign of the times, adding a sense of depth and subtlety to Princes music that he didnt achieved before (I mean 1999, and Purple Rain are great records, but they are 'woodcutters records') and also after that (he has released some great records, but most of them were lacking depth and subtlety).

To be honest, as much as i admire Prince as a musician, composer and producer, he couldnt have created his masterpieces without the help of fellow-musicians who brought a sense of nuance, subtlety and humanity to his music.

Don't get me wrong, I think Do U Lie? is a great song and it does show that Prince is at his best when he's taking risks and is willing to experiment more (with his own compositions and with the band members he chooses to work with), but with the amount of top-drawer material on Parade it will always stand out to me as the lowest point on the album...and if I had to pick a single track to remove from it I would still choose Do U Lie? everytime.

Love this cut. It was one of the first instances where I began to realize that P had an honest-to-god sense of humour, which became one of my favourite qualities in him. He should fool around like this more often!

LOVE THIS SONG.....

The song took me off guard at first and so I didn't really like it for a good long while. But then, like so many other P. songs I consider favourites now, it grew on me. I really, genuinely love Do U lie? It's got such an odd sound for a pop song, and in the perfect world in my mind it could've been released as a single and done fabulously.

I love this psychedelic song!






PARADE is one of those albums that will forever be on the top of my Prince list. I consider it a near miss work of genius that ends up being totally charming for the effort.


It's like a nasty pair of underwear in an otherwise calm still life picture--it's funky!!!
