How about this one?

I heard a cover of "Betcha By Golly Wow" performed by the late great Phyllis Hyman today and I thought, "Wow! Prince's version was WAAAY better than this one!" Then I thought "Why?" In comparison to "She Loves Me For Me" which may have been written for Mani and "Betcha By Golly Wow" for Mayte, which is best and why?

I personally prefer BBGW...beautiful song, sentiment and emotion...the video was beautiful as well. SLMFM is musically sound, but is the sentiment there? Any thoughts on this?

I can assure you that Betcha was not written for Mani.

Prince did a cover of this song from a group from the 70s-80s time period. I can't remember who. I sure someone will post the correct group.

Betta By Golly Wow was not written for Mayte. You might be getting confused as she was in the video.

How do you figure? Sure the original song was not written for Mayte, but his performance of the song was TRULY for her. The general question was basically, which song has the greatest sentiment...BBGW (for Mayte) or SLMFM (for Mani)? I still vote BBGW for sentiment's sake.

FYI...the original version of "Betcha By Golly Wow" is by The Stylistics and it's from their 1971 debut album. That Phyllis Hyman version you mentioned is from 1976 and in my opinion,it is lovely. It's more "Quiet Storm" than the original, and Hyman was a very underrated vocalist.

Prince's version of "BBGW" is okay, but my feeling is,why is he doing remakes anyway? He has at least a thousand unreleased songs in his vault, and he's constantly recording new material. The four remakes on 'Emancipation' are totally unnecessary, and they don't really improve on the original versions.

P's cover of BBGW was tolerable. His massacre of I Cant Make You Love Me (complete with princebonics) was unforgiveable.

Question2002

Prince did a excellent job on singing
Betcha By Golly Wow it brought back old
times when listening to this song done by
the Stylistics. I'm quite sure Prince when
younger was grooving to this song. I love
how Prince hit the high notes rose

morethanlikely,
prince does remakes 4 the same reason we listen 2 him doing them...
at one time or another we have all said, eye wonder what that song would sound like with prince doing it...so he did, so u no.
no other reason.
u really couldn't call it a remake, just prince sings...etc.
eye like the way prince sounds, he can redo any song he wants 2.
if he is taking requests, eye want 2 hear prince sings JANIS JOPLIN!

try just a little bit harder

as far as This One goes, seems Prince ran out of steam/Prince with that one!
wonder if Mani has started sabotaging old videos with Mayte n them, yet?
