So I checked out the links you provided, but I'm not seeing/feeling what's so great about those performances? I heard nothing original or noteworthy in what she did, just another insert-female-singer-here situation.

I'm not saying this to bait, argue or anything. I'd really like your take on the specifics of what you find so engaging.

Compared to Cassie, even I can sing! lol

It's not that she can't sing, but I guess I was looking to have my socks knocked off and it just didn't happen for me. I'll get some sleep and try again tomorrow with a fresh perspective (and not from a state of mental/emotional exhaustion!).

Supa,

I'm about to listen to WDYWMTD. It's one of my favorite recent Prince songs (yeah, I know you're not impressed by the Linn programming. I am. And, it's some of the most inspired bass playing he's demonstrated in YEARS). I cue it up right behind Mavis' "Come Home." Those two songs are like siblings.

All is forgiven. comfort

Well if I didn't have faith in your righteousness, I'd think you were a fibber of the highest magnitude. I actually had to go back and listen to the song because it was so forgettable I had no idea there was some mean ass bass playin goin on falloff

I still think this song is a piece of trash lol And please tell me you see the absolute absurdity of equating this as Dorothy Parker's Twin lol Dorothy Parker uses this song as a feminine pad! lol

Oh wait, I missed that mean ass bass playin falloff Are you talking about the part around 2:30 in? Or later? I don't see what the fuss is about this song, it makes me want to wretch lol

Not speaking about quality, but surely you must see the similarities between the two songs? Same kind of "empty" sound to it, quircky (sp?) linn programming, slapped bass without any real low end...

hmmmm, I think that's one of the best songs, especially in the long haul.... it's got an interesting prespective, intricate playing, and a strong vibe to my ears. It's one track I would play off of that album for my "serious" music fan friends.

one of the worst in the mellow vein would be.... "strollin"... it sounds like a parody.

Joi's "Dance With Yesterday" from her album Tennessee Slim is the Bomb

WOW! worship What an absolutely amazing song. mushy The sound is definitely inspired by Prince. It sounds like a song he could have written in the height of his creative zenith. And the lyrics are beautiful as well. I just got so embarrassed for Prince that his attempts at revisiting himself was just so lazy, uninspired and downright pathetic.

Prince, reclaim your throne man, don't be outPrinced by the juniors! lol

Oh, this isn't the best quality but you get the jist of how amazing a singer Joi is:

For the record, Prince is still my all time favorite EVER and I continue to laud him to non-believers. I just won't refer them to musuckology wink Does that count for anything? smile

I like this song...but the problem is: Prince seemed to be on auto-pilot lately. In Musicology he was paying tribute to the old masters and on 3121 it seems he wanted to prove that he influenced all those new stars (Beyonce, Justin, etc)

I really would love to hear something surprising and fresh from Prince. He has enough talent to do it.

"What Do U Want Me 2 Do" is one of my favs from the 'Musicology' album. The Linn, the Bass Guitar, the arranging, the changes, the vocal delivery... everything.

OK, I will give it that there is actual effort compared to some of the other tripe on there but no way is this the glory days of when Prince was putting out chit like Dorothy Parker lol

Joi's "Tennessee Slim" album is KOOL ( though I wish they could've left out all the George Clinton commentary, IMO...one or two is fine, but not through the whole album, lol ) My favorite tracks are "Dance With Yesterday", "So Famous", "I Love You Forever, Right Now", and "Another Rocket"....

I like Musicology, but I do agree that he was playing it safe.

The only thing that was groundbreaking for that album was the video for Cinnamon Girl.

Okay,I just went to her myspace,Dance With Yesterday,is the only one of the songs on her player that I liked, and that's because its sounds TOO MUCH like a Prince song.
The other two songs start off with a similar sound to a lot of modern R&B,that I just couldn't bare to listen to so I left before the songs finished.
Where's the funk?
