Do you actually listen to and enjoy Prince's Jazz?. from Madhouse to Eric Leeds & Prince's amazing collaboration [on Times Squared] to NEWS , to Xpectation and all the many other Jazz forms he's tried do you dig it or if it were anyone else would you bin it. Personally speaking i like a lot of it, sometimes it's an uncomfortable ride, sometimes it's irresistable [Nagoya, East, 6etc] Good on him, what are your thoughts?.

I LOVE Madhouse 8 & 16 to death!
Enjoyed most of Times Squared, never heard NEWS. I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

It's really good, but his instrumentals (jazz and otherwise) r when he has the worst tendency 2 b self-indulgent. I like C-Note because the songs r beautifully done and in more managable lengths. Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

Skimming past the argument of what constitutes 'Jazz', I'm a big fan of all the Madhouse stuff (esp. 16) and Xpectation too.
NEWS..... er no. | |

i'm one of the three people on here who doesn't mind N.E.W.S.
i don't mind any of the instrumental/jazz stuff he's done. i hope he does more.

Love it. I especially love N.E.W.S., and had hope to see more of its 'strangeness' work it's way into his pop music (where it used to be).

Yes, I do listen and enjoy it very much: Madhouse, Xpectation, C-Note, N.E.W.S., the Eric Leeds solo album, all the ONA live stuff I've heard, even "2 Nigs..." from the Black Album. Make that four. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

i don't mind any of the instrumental/jazz stuff he's done. i hope he does more. I love N.E.W.S. Very organic. Flows beautifully. Funky. Even gets heavy. Xpectation was the BOMB. I don't always need "songs". "He's a musician's musician..."

I don't always need "songs". my FAAAAVORITE is c-note. i love the jazz/rock fusion of it. it's very spontaneous and it takes me back to the days when prince's music took me on journeys. i like that a version of 'empty room' is thrown in with the instrumentals. i like that clash in the mix. but yeah, i like all the instrumental stuff he's done. it may not be my favorite prince music of all time, but i think it's refreshing for what it is.

I like C-Note and NEWS is OK. I hate Xpectation though and can't crack Madhouse. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I love Prince's jazz,but nobody else's.

yes, princes view of jazz is very intersting.
i think it's natural progression of his music,i also think fusion(jazz-rock) is where prince heart is . he is bored with pop music. real prince music lover can clearly see that. but i think his music on records is going to go in more electro sound. will that incorporate jazz??? only he knows

Jazz in any form is not really my style of music, but when I'm in the mood, I like Prince's interpretation of it. But not NEWS. That album, whatever genre you call it, is just boring. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Make that four. I got five on it. I really like NEWS and Madhouse 16 (more than 8). I don't really like Times Squared, and Xpectation is good to put on a work. I always forget about C-Note. Maybe I'll listen to that tomorrow... I only have a few other 'jazz' albums--you know classics like Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, some Billie & Ella...I'd like to build that area of my collection... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

jazz purists always make me laugh
they better study up on Miles before they criticize Prince in any form, Prince makes some enjoyable "jazz" music i like it all and wouldn't mind some more please

They're both wonderful. But Madhouse 24 from '88 is best of all.

Oh YEAH. I forgot 2 mention C-NOTE. That stuff never wears out on me. I also like the addition of "Empty Room" on there. I should've also mentioned that my musical history has been quite diverse, and many forms of Jazz and instrumental music of many forms has been a part of my musical journey. I guess I'm just sayin' that I'm qualified... Peace. G. "He's a musician's musician..."

They're both wonderful. But Madhouse 24 from '88 is best of all. i like the stuff from 24, but i never know if what i'm listening to is the 'correct' configuration. i think i had the 'definitive' 24, but it was on 'testament', which i haven't been able to find since i moved. not that i, uh, you know, OWN 'testament', but if i did, it would be lost right now

not that i, uh, you know, OWN 'testament', but if i did, it would be lost right now Are we thinking of the same thing? Cuz there are 2 "24"s. One from '88 and one from '93. The one I'm talking about is super tight and only has 5 tracks... 17 (Penetration) 18 (R U Legal Yet?) 19 (A Girl and Her Puppy) 20 (Jailbait) 21-24 (The Dopamine Rush Suite) The other one sounds more like his band from '91-'93, kinda like some of the "Vault" stuff. It has songs like "Asswhoop" and "Rootie Kazootie". It's still pretty great, but probably the weakest of the 4 Madhouse records.

the 93 one i don't think i have much from, or if i do, i'm not aware it's supposed to be madhouse. or maybe i'm slightly aware because of the 1-800 newfunk sampler. hell i don't know. i like 16. Nope. Prince was supposed to put out the first 24 and then dropped it. He and Eric then began working on a new project in '89 where he let Eric rummage the vaults and hand select songs he wanted to work on. Prince heard the final result and felt that the direction had veered away from Madhouse enough to warrant a solo album. So he let Eric keep the tracks. But the 2 records are nothing alike. And you're right about the New Funk thing. It had the 2nd "17" or "Carnac" as they sometimes call it. Not that I know if any of these things really exist, but if they did, someone should like hip you to the 3rd and 4th Madhouse.

i love NEWS too!, also when you think about , lets say that Prince was a Jazz fusion artist only and we put all his Jazzier works together [please somebody list them for us!] i'm sure we'd saying 'hey that Cat's got a pretty decent back catalogue building up with some good ideas'.

a box set of prince's instrumental projects would be DIVINE. even though i think i have it all, just to hear remastered versions - even with the skimpiest of liner notes (anticipating prince's trademark stinginess, alas) - would be faboo.
