This is the song that got me started with Prince. The whole 1999/Purple Rain situation may have awakened me 2 his popularity, but it was "Let's Pretend We're Married" that made me a fam. 2 this day I credit that song as the one that did it 4 me and enabled me 2 separate his mass appeal from his creativity. Yes it's raunchy, yes there's a drum machine, but it's meaning 2 me is priceless.

I love this track! I've been 'rediscovering' 1999 all week this is
probably my favorite song off the album

The video is pretty cool too, especially when he slides across the floor and blows a little kiss at the camera

I bought today For you and 1999 in a promotion. Now I can delete my mp3's!

I was 11 when it came out and I would sneak and listen to it on headphones my mom walked in on me singing it very loudly and knew what it was. I thought she only listend to Crystal Gayle and Kenny Rogers!!!!!

wow, i was just listening to this song yesterday. One of my favs.

Like many of you, this was the song that opened the door for me. It was 1985 and I had completely missed the Prince explosion, choosing to hitch my pony to whatever new wave group was hot at the time. My sister had a 1999 cassette and I overheard LPWM one night and I was riveted by the artful use of the "f word". I certainly wasn't getting this naughty fix with my Wham! and Duran Duran albums and I had to hear more. I pilfered the tape and played the song over and over, my pubescent self giggling each time P said what he was going to do with this girl Marsha. I eventually did listen to the rest of the tape (1999 and Little Red Corvette I was already familiar with) and loved it. Then it was on to Purple Rain and buying the back catalogue and by 1986, I owned all of Prince's releases and was completely hooked.

Great track... 1999 is fantastic... I really like the synthpop/techno stuff on 1999. But I think he got bored with it after that...
