Madonna and Prince are on the opposite ends of the musical spectrum. Madonna has always had a knack for feeling what the masses are into and then delivering just that to capitalize on the fad. Prince seems to more recklessly throw his art out there and make its acceptance by the masses second priority. Some might call that stupidity or use that as an example of Prince being less relevant. But really, I call it Prince being an artist first and foremost, and I'd rather he be remembered for that than as a businessman. Madonna reaches more people, but Prince affects more, and I'll take resonance over more exposure on Entertainment Tonight any day. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I thought about it and just had to own up, Prince is miles ahead in terms of musicianship but he's just not as relevant, culturally, as Madonna. You know this is the truth. Deny it and you're just wrong. Sorry. Madonna, a near 50 year old pop star still charting, still touring, still making headlines in a youth market, is a rare phenomenon. She's managed to stay on the radar longer, and more consistently than Prince, MJ, Sprinsteen, or any of the other 80s male superstars. She's got tenacity and grit, that's for sure. If you want to compare 80s pop acts who've retained their cultural and commercial clout, a better comparison would be Madonna and U2. Those two artists have a sharp sense of what's popular and are able to absorb trends without betraying their audience (something Prince failed to do with hip hop). Announcing Madonna's cultural supremacy over Prince may yield some thoughtful discussion, I suppose, but more likely it'll just incite the ire of the Prince faithful. But whatever, I hate to sound like a pompous blowhard so I'll shut up now.

Two completely different musicians. He actually has more talent, as far as I am concerned--at least musically. She may have more talent in terms of marketing to the people. But they are both on different missions musically and in terms of the business. No point in comparing these two. Prince works me better than her ANY DAY!!!!!

It's not like Prince stabbed them in the back. What you are saying from another viewpoint is Madonna and U2 have been knocking out the same 'populist' music year after year; whereas Prince has experimented and changed his musical style toward and then away from what is deemed 'popular' time and again. Not 'betraying' his audience would surely have meant staying on the same path knocking out the same basic Minneapolis funk sound and never experimenting with such musical styles as hip hop and jazz and rock, for instance. And at the end of the day, all musical styles are fair game for Prince, and hip hop is simply another genre of music to be used and abused. I don't think Prince 'betrayed' his audience with hip hop anymore than he betrayed them by experimenting with half-a-dozen other musical genres over the years.

wonder505said: how is my post an "attack"?!?!?! My point is that even if Madonna is more relevant in the end, does it really matter? Some people just care about the music whether or not the industry considers them "relevant". Perhaps to some people it does matter, but to me it doesn't. Someone could have easily responded that it does matter because of whatever. I did not insult or say anything about the person starting this post. Just like people write post about Prince not being in the charts and some folks who don't care about charts are going to express themselves in that manner. But since it bothers you so much, I'll spare your feelings and will refrain from using such terms. [Edited 12/6/06 16:03pm] I never said you attacked anyone. I said you attacked necessity of having the thread at all. But I didn't mean just you, there was IstenSzek 'who cares anyway' and Graycap 'This is so POINTLESS' and BeautifulYoungGem 'So what' and TheKidsGirl 'Whats the general purpose of this thread?' Does a thread have a specific purpose other than a discussion starting point? There's plenty of threads on the org that don't really matter a hill of beans in the long run, they're people just spouting off and people responding, but I just think it is pretty pointless joining in just to say you don't care about the basic question within the topic, which happens a surprising amount. Hey hold on you two, metal orange and wonder505 are some of favorite post makers. I think wonder505's point is that some threads are merely started to incite people and have very little redeaming quality. As far as ignoring these posts, some people feel the need (including myself) to say why would one phrase a question that begs for bad vibes. I know it's a free world and all that but it's obvious when one has bad intentions and uses it to make fun of people, to me I've got better things to do. [Edited 12/7/06 7:36am]

The simple fact is that she goes out of her way to make herself relevant hence the use of Trendy producers, if it's relevant it sells. Fair play to the girl.

Some people like starting up threads 2 get others going just 4 the hell of it. Madonna gets 2 much play on this site. I truly wonder do people on her site talk about Prince. I remember watching VH1s best 100 songs of the 80s or something like that, Madonna appeared only 1 time I believe with Like A Virgin. Whereas Prince appeared 3 times w/Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry & Kiss (and 1 time more than even the King of Pop)

madonna in 2 small categories( dance not pop or rock) thank you for mentioning that--- how's that for relevance? and this year alone- Madonna has been in controversies for her using the cross in "Like A Virgin", and after that she's only been in the news b/c she wants to adopt a child. I haven't heard much about her after that. Prince on the other hand was in the news for his 3121 album debuting @ #1, writing Song of the Heart for Happy Feet, and opening a show in Vegas. He was also mentioned for his divorce. His sounds alot better than Madonnas. [Edited 12/7/06 11:54am] "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

Sure Madonna is more popular than Prince and her music gets heard and played more than him, but it's MADONNA. What gets me about these type of posts though is you "lay down the law" so to speak and then say "if you disagree, you're wrong". I mean why even start the topic for discussion if you put an "end of discussion" in the very first post. because a kiss on the lips is better than a knife in the back

it's important to remember that prince never set out to be 'culturally relevant' and that madonna always said that she wnted a platform to express her views etc. so in some in many ways it's apples and oranges. Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND

[Edited 12/7/06 11:54am] Nice points all, but "relevance" does not necessarily have positive implications, e.g., Osama bin Laden is more relevant than either Prince or Madonna. Madonna is more relevant in some ways than Prince, and vice versa. The public loves hearing about Madonna (for good or ill), and many pop starlets are copying her marketing strategy. The public loves HEARING Prince, and many artists are emulating his musical style (because he's their most easily accessible touchstone, as opposed to Stevie, Sly, Jimi, Curtis, etc.) Works both ways, so I guess I'm changing my answer a little bit. waves, I'm not so sure about that. Purple Rain was clearly designed to make Prince a full-fledged star. Many of his albums after that (Batman, Diamonds and Pearls, Emancipation, Rave, for example) were calculated and marketed to be "comeback" records (with Prince even comparing them to his prior work, e.g., him saying "Gold" topped "Purple Rain"). He hasn't strived for that as his main goal, but I'm not so sure he never wanted that. Not as if that's bad per se. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
