Prince's voice and musicianship is far superior to Madonna's. That makes him more relevant

Forget about talent and musicianship for the moment. Why? Because, face it kids, Madonna makes more relevant albums than Prince in terms of exposure and hitting the cultural zeitgeist. Everyone knows and has heard a few tracks from her latest, "Confessions.." Who, outside Prince fandom knows or cares about tracks from 3121 or Musicology?

I thought about it and just had to own up, Prince is miles ahead in terms of musicianship but he's just not as relevant, culturally, as Madonna.

You know this is the truth. Deny it and you're just wrong. Sorry.

It's like comparing the Rolling Stones with Pink Floyd! Pink Floyd are better musically and lyrically but less popular. The Stones just keep comming back with another album that sounds like the last! Madonna just keeps changing her look and her writters and producers to keep her up to date. Prince does what he does on his own.And tries to keep it fresh but tends to fail because it don't sound like Prince no more! Hence less broad appeal. Nothing the hell to do with relevence! mad

I wouldn't use the Grammys as a way of determining who is more "relevent".As someone pointed out,Alicia Keyes has won more Grammys than Prince.Does that make her more relevent than him?

thank you for mentioning that--- how's that for relevance?

and this year alone- Madonna has been in controversies for her using the cross in "Like A Virgin", and after that she's only been in the news b/c she wants to adopt a child. I haven't heard much about her after that.

Prince on the other hand was in the news for his 3121 album debuting @ #1, writing Song of the Heart for Happy Feet, and opening a show in Vegas. He was also mentioned for his divorce. His sounds alot better than Madonnas.

Hey,let's be fair lol I don't know exactly how some of you define "relevence",but I would argue that Madonna is still very relevent in the pop music world.

2006 was a remarkable year for Madonna and she was in the news for alot of great things. Her 'Confessions Tour' officially became the most successful tour by a female artist, grossing $200 million in just a few months. In addition, her 'Confessions' CD sold around 8 million copies worldwide.Yes,she had her her share of negative press and controversy, but she remains a force to be reckoned with. The fact that we're even discussing her (on a Prince site,no less) pretty much proves that she is relevent.

It doesn't say nothing at all.Award shows are a joke these days and I don't see why you guys are using these nominations as a way of determining who is "relevent".By your logic, would you say that Alicia Keyes or Beyonce are more relevent than Prince? They have won more Grammys than he has.

truth is, apart from purple rain he was never a million seller,
with the odd exception of a great selling single or album.

ATWIAD (3 million), Batman (millions), Diamonds & Pearls (6 million) and a few others inbetween all sold a million or more. I get your point, but his overall sales are pretty high.

Madonna, a near 50 year old pop star still charting, still touring, still making headlines in a youth market, is a rare phenomenon. She's managed to stay on the radar longer, and more consistently than Prince, MJ, Sprinsteen, or any of the other 80s male superstars. She's got tenacity and grit, that's for sure.

If you want to compare 80s pop acts who've retained their cultural and commercial clout, a better comparison would be Madonna and U2. Those two artists have a sharp sense of what's popular and are able to absorb trends without betraying their audience (something Prince failed to do with hip hop).

Announcing Madonna's cultural supremacy over Prince may yield some thoughtful discussion, I suppose, but more likely it'll just incite the ire of the Prince faithful. But whatever, I hate to sound like a pompous blowhard so I'll shut up now.

Madonna and U2 have done an exceptional job of maintaining their careers.

There are so many great replies to this, most by 'bonedaddy'. XD
But as for mine:
Madonna is not relevant, unless you think that being an overly fashion conscious slut is 'relevance' amidst all the turmoil, racism, war. ETC. that's going on these days.
And she can not sing; at least not well. I'm a trained opera singer, so I would know.

confused

So, basically, all I have left to base relevance on is how many channels and radio stations are willing to play their music (Madonna wins this one hands down, because the last Prince video I saw on MTV and VH1 was "Musicology" and that was only played early in the morning), how many current artist's credit them as influences (Prince has Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell, Outkast, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys rooting for him; Madonna has Paris Hilton and Britney Spears - whoohoo for her), and how many publicity stunts each one has done in recent years....hmmm, well, all talent and musicianship aspects aside rolleyes, I'm more than happy to give Madonna the "Relevance" Trophy, considering that she just released her second fashion line, got into a fight with the Catholic Church and the Malawian government, and made out with Britney and Christina on stage at the VMAs two years ago. So, apparently, "relevance" is just a fancy word for "publicity whore" in your statement. All poor Prince has to offer in the bad publicity stunt department in recent years is the name-change episode and the yellow ass-out outfit. So, Congratulations, Madonna, for being the biggest media whore to make it out of the 80's. Micheal Jackson would have probably beat Madonna if he hadn't moved out of the states.

it's important to remember that prince never set out to be 'culturally relevant' and that madonna always said that she wnted a platform to express her views etc. so in some in many ways it's apples and oranges.

waves, I'm not so sure about that. Purple Rain was clearly designed to make Prince a full-fledged star. Many of his albums after that (Batman, Diamonds and Pearls, Emancipation, Rave, for example) were calculated and marketed to be "comeback" records (with Prince even comparing them to his prior work, e.g., him saying "Gold" topped "Purple Rain"). He hasn't strived for that as his main goal, but I'm not so sure he never wanted that.

Not as if that's bad per se.

i get what you're saying. what i meant is that prince meant to be a successful musician first and formeost and was bitten by the "wanna be a star" bug after his taste during 1999(or at least that's how it always sounded to me). prince has always wanted to sell records, sure, but i think it's a strecth to say that he wanted to be a cultural icon type the way madonna has always set out to do.

I know I am coming in a bit late with this, but here's my 2 cents:

Madonna is more relevant than Prince only as far as being a celebrity and an all around famous person. In no way is Madonna, nor has she ever been, more relevant than Prince in terms of music.

You're way out of line. She is not relevant to black culture, or asian culture, or arab culture, or indigenous culture. If you mean "white western culture" then you may have a point, but most of the people in the western world are not white and she is not relevant as an artist to them. I can only assume you misunderstood what I meant by culture
