Chris Evans Blasts The Brit Awards...and Prince

In Saturdays UK Tabloid 'The Sun' Radio DJ and TV presenter Chris Evans blasted The Brit awards as "interminably dull" and that there should be less music! He then went on to slate Prince's show-stopping performance last year (you know the one...the one that all the journalists and celebs were raving about for days afterwards - yeah, that one):

"There should be less music too. For me, last year, the self indulgent early Prince performance would have turned a lot of viewers off. He was a nightmare leading up to the event, one minute he was coming, the next he wasn’t...very bad karma and I think he paid the price..."

So, the question is: Do you think Prince has "paid the price"?

His entire ginger-rant can be read on his radio show blog HERE

Most great artists are self indulgent and very selfish at times. They don't function on the same plane as "normal everyday" people. It kind of comes with the territory. Better than being a TV presenter anyway. All great artists of the past have had their quirks and P is definitely no exception so I am not surprised at Evan's comments but I'll still take P just the way he is. biggrin

i think he's reaching. his performance wasn't career-defining, though it certainly wasn't an embarrassment either. if evans is trying to make it into some big nasty incident, i think it's more for attention than anything. non-issue.

I know what he meant, I mean, as soon as I saw Prince come on, I thought bah what's this, it just got in the way of watching James Blunt collect his awards...

I'm being sarcastic.

We all know Evans has got a bee-in-his-bonnet about Prince's diva-ish antics ever since he didn't turn upto his much advertised radio show all those years ago. Perhaps his visit to TFI Friday wasn't as smooth as it appeared.

Although Prince's appearance when he wasn't even up for an award was a bit odd to some (though of course he has won several awards before and is sort of in the Brit awards winners club), very few can argue his performance was powerful and memorable, and I've met several non-Prince fans who were mightily impressed. From even the reaction of the other popstars there, it was evident Prince had blown everybody off the stage and showed the true power of live music. Self indulgent? Well I guess it couldn't have been self-indulgent unless the Brit organisers felt it worth their while to indulge a living legend in the first place. I wonder if the same argument would have been used if it was Stevie Wonder or some less controversial, polarising legend playing? Prince's perceived 'wierdness' always makes him an easy target for any type of media.

I really don't get Evan's argument about having less music at these shows, it is a 'music' show for heaven's sake, it is a great showcase to the general public to see those that can do it live and those that can't, and those that can get increased kudos and more fans for it.

Prince's performance wasn't boring. It just made the rest of the show look boring by comparison.

If it bothered Evans so much why did he wait so long to complain about it?

Are someone's year-end ratings low? lol

[sarcasm]Oh, and yeah, Prince really seems to be "paying the price" what with that pesky induction into the British RRHOF, 3121 Vegas, and the impending Super Bowl...what a horrible price to pay.[/sarcasm]

Chris Evans isn't doing this for attention, he is just giving his opinion on something to a small group of people that read his blog.

If he was looking for a raise, he would have picked a group or artist that has some relevance to the UK audience.

Prince isn't that artist, and Chris Evans is right, there's no place for jumped up pop stars in the british music scene.

I always shake my head reading shit like this. If anyone has the right to just show up at an awards show like this, it's Prince. Chris has some damn nerve talking that shit. Like what DP said, why did it take him so long to come up with this? Plus, the people in the audience sure loved what they saw and that's more important.

One more bone to pick. Why is it that when Prince wants to do something like a surpise performance, the man gets ripped up to some degree but if someone like Madonna does it, it's praised to high heaven? If she did what he did, you would see so many brown noses in the UK and here, you wouldn't know what to do with yourself. Well I smell bullshit.

Cause he's a legend. If Stevie Wonder, or MJ wanted to do that, then they should be able to because of all the music they've provided over the years and Prince is in that category whether you or anyone else likes it or not. He just is.

In a way, i agree with Chris Evans regarding that award shows should be live 'cause it would be more fun 2 watch. The only reason i watched the Brits was 4 Prince's performance which was by far and away the best of the night. And thats the only time i've watched the Brits 'cause the British music scene is crap.

Prince paid the price??? I dont get dat at all.

I don't think that is true. He is still regarded as a legend, maybe a has-been legend, but a legend nevertheless. If he was nothing the UK music industry/population wouldn't have been fawning over him to go to the Brits and the UK Hall Of Fame.

What gets me, is if you could pluck a deceased legend out of time, say Jimi Hendrix, would anybody begrudge him playing 12 minutes at the Brits? Of course not, because it would be a memory to treasure. With Prince we have a living legend, certainly in the 'live performances' category, in a hundred years time people are going to be wishing they could have experienced a live performance from him just like I wish I could go back and see Jimi perform. Looked from that position, I think you can see every performance is special and without doubt some legends should be given as much time to perform as they want!

You may have a point in as much as there was some enthusiasm from the industry over Prince performing, but that's it.

Were the UK population fawning over him being there? I don't think so. Most of them really couldn't care. I'm not saying that they're right, just that thats's how it is.

Well, it was kept relatively secret he was performing, so the UK population never had a chance to fawn over him or not before he had disappeared back to the USA. Certainly if you watch the crowd during his performance, they seem hugely excited to see him and it wasn't all music insiders, at the end practically everybody was on their feet and it did look like a huge audience. How else can you gauge the UK population's response to Prince? Certainly not from media reviews after the event because they don't speak for the people, they always have their own agenda. As I said, the people I spoke to that saw the show were unanimously blown away by Prince's performance. That's the only gauge I can offer.

Some would say it is the best for years. There are loads of young singer/songwriter artists and guitar bands, that seem to have largely taken over the r'n'b wannabees, girl/boy bands and pop idol contestants. I should be happy. It just seems to me these guitar bands miss the most import elements - a charismatic, unique lead vocalist and a unique sound. They all seem to sound like one another, and you're lucky if they've got 2 albums worth of strong songs in them before they're spent, just tons of Coldplay clones. And all these James Blunt-esque singers coming out of the woodwork, it is just record companies jumping on the bandwagon of a current successful format that they know will bring them tons of money. After a while it just becomes one big boring uninspired mess.

It would be interesting to see figures of his record sales after the Brits.

If Prince had done the Brits, then spent a bit of time doing interviews etc, and some live shows, he'd have done himself a few favours.

I know that Prince won't do that, for whatever reason. He's not going to change for me or anybody for that matter. I'm just saying that he is thought of as arrogant and dismissive of the UK market and that's why no-one really cares in the UK.

The Sad Ginger Way anchor is just a toss or because he cannot get a decent gig himself anymore and everything he touched turns to brass like his hair.

I bet he does not have any riders when he gets a job. I bet prince is no worse then any other celeb.

So rather then have prince at the beginning proving that most musician/performers/singers nowadays are shite, have him at the end to blow the show apart, rather then blow it at the beginning.

So why mention it now, rather then after last year.

go away you sad ginger git and play with your self.

sorry for the rudeness, but he is just an are's
