Which decade has had better P albums: The 90's or the '00's?

Well, so far anyway?

I'd say this decade stands out as his worst yet so far in terms of albums, though it's slowly been getting better.

2000: No album
2001: The Rainbow Children **1/2/*****
2002: One Nite Alone ****/*****
2003: N.E.W.S. **/*****
2004: Musicology ***/*****
2005: No album
2006: 3121 ****/*****

Compare that to the 90's by this point, which was pretty all over the place:

1990: Graffiti Bridge ***1/2/*****
1991: Diamonds and Pearls ***/*****
1992: prince **1/2/*****
1993: Come ****/*****
1994: Chaos and Disorder ***1/2/*****
1995: The Gold Experience *****/*****
1996: Emancipation ****/*****

So far, the only thing I prefer about the '00 albums is that the low points aren't anywhere near as bad as the 90's albums' low points. But the highs of the 90's albums absolutely DESTROY those of the '00 albums so far.

The 00's have amazing music but horrible sound which eradicates any good making them obsolete. I would say the same from TGE on.

no it's a very unfortunate reality. I wish it wasn't so but it's a fact.

yes i'm anal about it but it's something i, like many engineers am extremely opinionated and passionate about.

I don't really consider the internet-only releases as proper albums. If it wasn't pressed to CD, I don't count it.

It's the first six years of the 90's vs. the first six years of the '00's.

The 90's also had The Love We Make, Shhh, The Question of U, I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore, etc.

I don't hear anything from the '00's anywhere near as amazing as those high points.

I would say that the 90's albums are better. I say this because in the 90's I think still felt free to express himself without any societal restrictions. Since his JW conversion I think he's held himself back and his music has become a alot more mellow. The 00's albums are still good in terms of the musicianship though.

The 90s are far better than the new millennium stuff so far.

The 90's were kind of crazy, but when they were good, they were really good.

The output lately has been much less than the 90's and the music is all consistently nice. But not great.

Wow, I completely agree.

That sums it up perfectly. The 90's are so inconsistent, but you're right. When they were good, they were good.

The '00's to me feel like an artist trying so hard not to make bad music that's received poorly that it's held back. There's a sound of hesitation in a lot of the new material, like him playing it safe.

Anyway, I guess if you wanted to flush this out, you could add these '00 albums:

The Chocolate Invasion: **1/2/*****
The Slaughterhouse: **/*****

Haven't heard Xpectation yet.

the 00's lack the energy of the previous decades, but he is getting older. the 00's also lack in great songwriting.

where is the quality of writing like "7", "TMBGITW", "The Love we Make", "ILYBIDTUA" or even "In this bed i Scream"

however, his albums are certainly tighter, more focused, the production is better and his musicianship hasnt waned (think TRC)

So far, the 90's.

The 90's had several classics--Cream, Gett Off, Sexy MF, 7, TMBGITW and possibly others.

I don't hear any classics in the 00's yet, and other than TRC, he seems to be playing it pretty safe. Even he jazz stuff isn't really anything new.

But the decade's not over. If he could blend the concise thematic nature of 3121 & Musicology with the adventurous musical mastery of TRC, he'd have a new classic on his hands.

1996: Chaos and Disorder
1997: The Truth
1997: Kamasutra
1998: Crystal Ball
1998: New Power Soul

I shouldnt say until 2010 when the 00s are over with. I know Prince is going to release at least two albums before this decade ends.

nod

I knew eactly what I was going to write while browsing through the responses and you said almost word for word what I was gonna say...
I completely agree!!

In the 90s he produced, played and sang with no inhabitions in a kinda reckless manner with everything he did. I didn't love everything he did, but as you said when it was good, it was legendary!!!

The last few years (although I still looovveeee him) he seems to do everything looking over his shoulder if you know what i mean..

In saying that, I loved 3121, and am looking forward to his next amazing creation cloud9

(oh yeah and I know this isn't what the thread was about....but seriously what is the story with the twins??? Is it just me? I can't stand them)
I mean, with Wendy&Lisa he took them on board as talented musicians, the twins? again playing it safe...

well thats what I think anyway rolleyes

But I don't wanna end on a negative, so I LOVE HIM, I LOVE HIM, I LOVE HIM lol lol
All of me I give 2 thee down at your feet
The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me

So far I think the 90's are just a bit in front, 90 to 92 reasonably good well rounded albums but not his best albums, 93= Come really had good moments but lacked extra effort as it was too short and lacked dynamics and crappy album cover, 94 was overall mediocre album had some highlights but nothing particuliarly innovative or interesting, 95 a good album but I didnt like the gimmicky voices between songs I thought they were tacky and a couple songs that i thought tacky too.
1996 Emancipation good but overhyped and best tracks would make 1 album.
NPS a mediocre album, Rave I find more listenable in general to several other of the 90's mediocre albums but Rave is let down by some of the lesser material on it. In the 00's so far TRC and 3121 are the highlights, TRC can be quite listenable but I find the over religiosity and voices between tracks bit annoying I mean I would think it less tacky if those things were reduced or left out, 3121 was a bit of a suprise a nice suprise to hear return to kinda 80's sound but really I tend to be digging mostly about 50 or 60% of the tracks their are tracks I just skip.

nod He seems somehwat suppresed in his music and some of the feeling he used to put in it is not quite the same. The only time I really see feeling si when I see him live. I liked Musicolgy, but it's not one of my favortie albums. The 90's was a hellfied musical era for Prince.

I'd have to say that the 90s did, because it's kind of the last we saw of the "raw" Prince before he became a JW. But I mean this decade isn't over yet, Prince could still drop an album that will make our hair curl into knots! (Which is a good thing!)

But as a side note, "3121" kicks ass!
