"Cars" Gary Numan = "Automatic"
"What The Hell" - Ohio Players = "Computer Blue"
"Vietnamese Baby" - New York Dolls = "Ronnie talk To Russia"
"Get It On (Bang A Gong) T-Rex = "Cream"
"Revolution" The Beatles = "Paisley Park"
Other than these, P actually has used more lyrics or similar phrases from other artists than the actual music. Here's just a few:

"Don't Worry,...if there's a Hell below, we're all going to go." Curtis Mayfield
"Don't Worry,...I won't hurt u. I only" well, ya'll know the rest.
"Mommy, what's a Funkadelic?" - Funkadelic
"Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?"
"International Feel" Todd Rundgren = "International Lover"
John Lennon's "Woman" "I never meant to cause you any sorrow or pain" = "Purple Rain "I never meant to cause u any sorrow. I never meant to cause u any pain."

-----
You can't be serious with some of the phrases. eek

DEAD serious, Laura. Oh, and I need my head bashed in for even forgeting these two:
The Stones "Miss You" = "Uptown"
The Stones "Fool To Cry' = "Girl" by The Time
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

Hmm, I guess The Beautiful Ones kind of sounds like Angel by Hendrix.

I take back my earlier comment about Prince’s 3 chains of Gold being a rip off of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen:

There are 12 tones used in Western music.
7 are named from the alphabet.
A B C D E F G

Pick up an instrument or sit down and write a tune and try not to sound like somebody. All musicians do this, it’s not thievery its ….it’s called Borrowing (with the intention to keep and pass off as original).

And the word "It" appears in countless other songs.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Purple Rain--Purple Haze

There seem to be two camps on this post, One is that he is rip off artist and the other is that he is an artist with a vast array of music that often resembles other people's music. I happen to agree with the latter one. I agree with sqmusic and giovanni777. He's a pop artist with a vast array of styles. It's bound to happen that his music sounds like something that someone else did but I feel very strongly that P drops little hints about his influences and often drops nods to other artists. But rip off is just too strong of a term and I feel it's unjust. This post reflects what I often feel happens on this site. It misses the greater point of what this one individual has accomplished. His influence is boundless and his impact on comtemporary music is impressive. To just say he's a rip off artist is simply being oversimplistic.

I don't think anyone here really thinks of him as just a rip of artist. But he does "sample" if not literally, figuratively. he sees or hears something he likes, and he makes it his own. Every artist does this.

"Good writers borrow, great writers steal" I don't know who said it first, but I said it last!

then the thread should have said "sample" artist. I know what your saying about not taking things literally but to imply this is simply silly. Show me an artist thats truly origianal and I show you a role model. Don't worry NDRU I still got your back but I think the term "rip off artist" is often misused and it implies very negative things. biggrin

sure, but I don't think they meant rip-off artist seriously--but some people (even fans) are so negative I could see where maybe it could be serious

I think a lot of Prince's supposed "rip-offs" are just songs that sound similar to other songs. With over a century of recorded music, that's bound to happen. I think the similarities between "Cream" and "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" are a little more direct though. I think Prince was consciously trying to record his own version of that song. What gives it away for me is that line "You're filthy cute and baby U know it." I thought that was a wink and nod to T. Rex's lyric "You're dirty sweet and you're my girl." I don't think he "ripped off" T. Rex, I think he probably just heard that song on the radio and felt like doing his own take on that style. And it resulted in a cool little song that went to number one for him. Where's the harm?

There is no point in just talking about Prince when every other artist has also done it and its not always a rip-off but an influence.

I love when people get all crazy lol

Although I do think that Reflection is a clear and total rip off musically of Smoking Room, I tend to believe that Prince is still an original creative artist and that most anything he's borrowed he's tricked out so hard that it's nearly impossible to say it isn't his own. One thing is for sure, Prince may be able to lift from other artists and create something all his own, people cannot lift from Prince and improve from there. It just doesn't happen.

You just watch out pal!! Cause bad things happen when you talk bad about the man. Yeah bad bad things!! Like a hang nail that won't go away or you leave the house and your 10 miles away when you realize that you left your wallet back at the house and there is no way you can go clubbing without your money so you have to go all the way back to your house again to get your wallet and on your way back you run into a traffic jam so it makes you even later getting to your friends outside the club so they go ahead without you because you promised to meet them at a certain time and when you get there you can't find them and when you do they are already drunk without you so you're the bored sober friend who has been designated the designated driver since you haven't even started drinking yet.

Yeah pallie I wouldn't want to be you right now!!! wink

Thieves in the Temple--Say Say Say<---- shake..ain't no way in HELL that they sound similiar.you reachin' i'm sorry. falloff

What Do You Want Me To Do--Cant Help It(?) Michael Jackson (?)<---if anything, WDYWMTD shares the same musical genetics as The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker.(The LM-1 Being part of the purple dna that is.)
