I just saw it and man, you're right. He seemed so nervous up there, you could def. hear it in his voice too. Public speaking is definitely not his strong point. Not so unusual though, I guess. Lots of artists are able to do some of the most outrageous, incredible performances when they're playing or singing, but clam up if they have to just take it easy and speak. Everything he does is prestaged and rehearsed, even the way he speaks in interviews. I think Prince only chooses to show his fans the real him when he is live in concert. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Well I was pretty disappointed really. After all the adoration and praise in the pre-acceptance speech about how he can tear it up on all these instruments, then he doesn't even play "because his band isn't around!" And no tribute performance either?? but there was for every other act.... Don't know why he didn't just play a acoustic number or something at the piano.
I kind of feel that prince isn't very articulate really from the interviews I've seen of him, to say he's spent his life on stage in front of very big audiences and to come out with such a crummy speech is a bit pathetic, though I suppose he didn't go to college did he? Too much God pushing and not enough funk for my taste. At least James Brown took to stage, Respect there.

Very endearing and thoughtful speech! I dont thinks he's ever been so candid before - his humility is touching. Glad he came all the way to the UK to see us!

Thanks to everyone who posted pix and hook-ups to his induction....
I felt he really spoke from the heart...I'm not at all uncomfortable with his shyness...you can feel the confidence behind the exterior persona...and the humility he showed was an added plus...he did a wonderful job, and as a fan I'm extremely excited about his induction. I thank him for all the superb music he's shared with us throughout the years, and I'm certain there will be much more to come.

It was a good opportunity to show people how good he is with something as simple as an acoustic guitar, a chair and a microphone! OR he could have done something on piano. He doesn't need a band! A real shame as even now I know loads of people who say "Prince plays his own instruments! Really?" 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

MattUK said: As always, a shame that he didn't perform (too much time given to Bon Jovi and Brian Wilson as a result!).
But sooooo cool that he made the trip over. I thought the speech was perfect and it was obvious that there was a lot of love in the room. Great too, to see W&L giving comments - I wonder when/where they were recorded? and Joni appearing at the end of the montage - excellent. Such a contrast between the grace with which he conducted himself and the circus that surrounded MJ this week and that god-awful 'performance'.I'm no MJ hater and I don't intend this to go off on an MJ thread but I thought it just worth pointing out the difference in the way these two icons are viewed these days. We love you over here Mr Nelson. Come back soon and give us some love back. Very true, it's so easy to be a Prince fan these days.

It won't be me that's for sure.... I already posted it earlier (reply #168, I think): Okay, I did a quick transcript of P's speech (even though most people can watch it on HQ or YouTube. The whole clip with the others talking about him is 8 minutes & would take me too long to do (esp. since I'm at work!).
Beyonce: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, the incomparable Prince! (1999 intro music & applause. Prince enters stage left, hugs Beyonce, turns to podium, smiles, lifts award.) Prince: I try to always take time to thank God for the many blessings that he’s bestowed in my life because I do think of my life as a blessing and one of the reasons is because I grew up at a time when you could hear James Brown, Santana, Jimi Hendrix,...Sly & the Family Stone all on the same stage....Uh, that was before consolidation...uh...these days when I meet young artists I try to hip them to the words of Joni Mitchell, and the tightness of Tower of Power, the arrangements of Earth, Wind & Fire. And.....basically.....the gift of music does come from God and the sooner we respect it as such I think we’ll get back to another golden age. I’m so thankful that, uh, I got to see Patti LaBelle tonight and Beyonce, of course. (Looks back at B.) I’m a little nervous ‘cause I don’t like speaking—I’d rather play, I wish my band was here but we’re working in Las Vegas now. Um, you’re all invited 3121. (applause & cheers from crowd) I wanna thank everyone for this; it’s indeed an honor. Goodnight. Exit stage left. Prince was speaking SO quietly--and where I put the ... was when he paused. Also, the 'uhs' weren't like dumb 'uhs' but more like thinking of what to say 'uhs' if that makes sense. I did the best I could....

Oh wow so excited of seeing Prince. He looks so damn fine that it is killing me.
Okay so if public speaking isn't one of his strongest points but who cares because all I want from him is his crossgenre sound and his funk. Like my favorite celebrities, I don't care about their personal lives or their weakest points just give me your best in your art whether it is music or acting. Also it was good to see some of his former bandmates talk about him especially Wendy and Lisa. My Lisa had put on some weight but she still looks lovely as ever. I love Wendy and all but whats up with her wearing those scarfs? It was nice to see Pharell too and he cracked me up about the part Prince play better instruments than anyone else in his band. And I think that Beyonce did a super job presenting the award and she always have full admiration for Prince. [Edited 11/21/06 10:06am]
