I already posted it earlier (reply #168, I think):

Okay, I did a quick transcript of P's speech (even though most people can watch it on HQ or YouTube. The whole clip with the others talking about him is 8 minutes & would take me too long to do (esp. since I'm at work!).

Beyonce: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, the incomparable Prince!

(1999 intro music & applause. Prince enters stage left, hugs Beyonce, turns to podium, smiles, lifts award.)

Prince: I try to always take time to thank God for the many blessings that he’s bestowed in my life because I do think of my life as a blessing and one of the reasons is because I grew up at a time when you could hear James Brown, Santana, Jimi Hendrix,...Sly & the Family Stone all on the same stage....Uh, that was before consolidation...uh...these days when I meet young artists I try to hip them to the words of Joni Mitchell, and the tightness of Tower of Power, the arrangements of Earth, Wind & Fire. And.....basically.....the gift of music does come from God and the sooner we respect it as such I think we’ll get back to another golden age. I’m so thankful that, uh, I got to see Patti LaBelle tonight and Beyonce, of course. (Looks back at B.) I’m a little nervous ‘cause I don’t like speaking—I’d rather play, I wish my band was here but we’re working in Las Vegas now. Um, you’re all invited 3121. (applause & cheers from crowd) I wanna thank everyone for this; it’s indeed an honor. Goodnight.

Exit stage left.

Prince was speaking SO quietly--and where I put the ... was when he paused. Also, the 'uhs' weren't like dumb 'uhs' but more like thinking of what to say 'uhs' if that makes sense. I did the best I could....

It's nice someone had the patience to do that... thumbs up! cool

THANK YOU!
I happened to see it last night.....but really thanx anyway....it's nice to re-read it. I love his speech.
I think he was genuninely shy.
He is just not really for publich speaking, which I can really appreciate.
When I am on stage, dancing, I don't feel shy at all, but then when I have to stand in front of people and do a speech, I am SOOOOO SHY.
It sounds weird maybe, but it happens!

Yea I agree when he is on stage he bears his soul through music, he is so expressive and open with his lyrics that it doesn't only penatrate your eardrums it hits you right in your soul.....well it does with me anyway!
When he speaks publicy he is the complete opposite he always looks so shy, like he wants to be anywhere else.....I think it's a lovely quality in a person.
I was so proud of him when he got that award.... biggrin biggrin
All of me I give 2 thee down at your feet
The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me

I kind of feel that prince isn't very articulate really from the interviews I've seen of him, to say he's spent his life on stage in front of very big audiences and to come out with such a crummy speech is a bit pathetic, though I suppose he didn't go to college did he?

I don't understand this comment. Prince is one of the most articulate musicians I have ever seen. He is very intelligent, well read and well versed. I enjoy watching his interviews. Being shy or uncomfortable during an interview or while speaking in public does not equate with being inarticulate. Also, as a college professor, I can tell you that attending/graduating from college does not equate with being articulate.

I agree with you! From the interviews and speaches I have seen I think he is very eloquent and seems intelligent. That he is shy and uncomfortable is only making him more attractive

I feel the same. I think it was so candid of him to say, "I feel nervous. I do better when I am playing music, but I didn't bring my band today...." touched

I'm so glad VH1 aired it again last night!!! For people who haven't seen it, I would check to see if they are going to air it this weekend. His speech was really nice and humble. I think he got the memo on toning down the makeup, he looked great. I also noticed he didn't say "Jehovah" or Jehovah God"....just "God". I have a feeling he is no longer a JW.

Thank You! And I am a college grad. lol

He is more articulate than most. Just listen to most rap artists' interviews...can't understand a fuggin word they say other than "muthafucka" (Pac being the exception). Even Bouncy has a twang of ghettotronics herself. razz
