Aaw, he's so awkward! It's adorable. Good for him for making the effort. We're normally lucky if we can get three words in a row out of him. Lookin' good, as always. I'm really liking the hair. [Edited 11/16/06 22:20pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

It was still edited though. You could see that it was not the start of his speach. I wonder what they cut out? There was loads of clapping as he came on the stage and he was motioning to the audience like 'aw shucks, please, no really, I'm so modest' type thing. I recorded the speech on my phone so if i get a chance will write it up.. It was such a cool evening Wolf Mother, Brian Wilson, James Morrison, really nice. Was anyone else's heart beating a bit quicker when our man came on?
The anticipation was killing me - he was practically at the end of the show and Dermot kept on dropping his name before the adverts, I was getting so excited.. You can tell Beyonce loves him, ergo I love Beyonce. It's so good to see artists of such huge influence these days giving him the credit he deserves. Not to mention Joni Mitchell, that was a very surprising appearance as she's notoriously reticent about exposing herself in the media (if that's the right expression..!!). He did seem quite shy, but I think it's all calculated..no-one has inner confidence like Prince does. p.s. I agree about Joss, she's getting a bit Diva-esque without having earned such status (yet). However, to get ahead maybe that's what it takes these days.. Prince wasn't exactly a shrinking violet on stage in his early days. [Edited 11/17/06 2:33am] "I'm much too hot to be cool"

Prince did very well there I think. As he suggested, he's normally not too hot at just speaking like that up on stage, often it can make for uncomfortable viewing. This time around though at least he managed to put together a nice little speech and talk about his influences etc. Congrats Prince!

and what was up with Brian Wilson - If he can't pull it off any more he shouldn't get up there.

You know what though, not matter how negative I feel toward the way things are with regards to Prince, when you see things like this and montages that show his greatest moments, and you hear great artists talking about how influencial he is, it all melts away into happy, fuzzy purpleness

awww that was really quite touching....
It's always great to hear that beautiful speaking voice of his. I felt very good for him and proud of/for him as I watched that. "not a fan" yeah...ok

As always, a shame that he didn't perform (too much time given to Bon Jovi and Brian Wilson as a result!).
But sooooo cool that he made the trip over. I thought the speech was perfect and it was obvious that there was a lot of love in the room. Great too, to see W&L giving comments - I wonder when/where they were recorded? and Joni appearing at the end of the montage - excellent. Such a contrast between the grace with which he conducted himself and the circus that surrounded MJ this week and that god-awful 'performance'. I'm no MJ hater and I don't intend this to go off on an MJ thread but I thought it just worth pointing out the difference in the way these two icons are viewed these days. We love you over here Mr Nelson. Come back soon and give us some love back.

Joss Stone got right up my nose though, she's such a big for her boots show off! What's with the American accent Joss? Okay, I did a quick transcript of P's speech (even though most people can watch it on HQ or YouTube. The whole clip with the others talking about him is 8 minutes & would take me too long to do (esp. since I'm at work!). Beyonce: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, the incomparable Prince! (1999 intro music & applause. Prince enters stage left, hugs Beyonce, turns to podium, smiles, lifts award.) Prince: I try to always take time to thank God for the many blessings that he’s bestowed in my life because I do think of my life as a blessing and one of the reasons is because I grew up at a time when you could hear James Brown, Santana, Jimi Hendrix,...Sly & the Family Stone all on the same stage....Uh, that was before consolidation...uh...these days when I meet young artists I try to hip them to the words of Joni Mitchell, and the tightness of Tower of Power, the arrangements of Earth, Wind & Fire. And.....basically.....the gift of music does come from God and the sooner we respect it as such I think we’ll get back to another golden age. I’m so thankful that, uh, I got to see Patti LaBelle tonight and Beyonce, of course. (Looks back at B.) I’m a little nervous ‘cause I don’t like speaking—I’d rather play, I wish my band was here but we’re working in Las Vegas now. Um, you’re all invited 3121. (applause & cheers from crowd) I wanna thank everyone for this; it’s indeed an honor. Goodnight. Exit stage left. Prince was speaking SO quietly--and where I put the ... was when he paused. Also, the 'uhs' weren't like dumb 'uhs' but more like thinking of what to say 'uhs' if that makes sense. I did the best I could....

I love Prince since 1983 and take the good which far out weighs the bad. The man is a fricking genius. Just leave it at that and accept it. Now I am just gonna watch Beyonce induce him on Channel 4. Go sister.

Ok, so I finally got to watch this, thanks to the link someone posted up above, and damn that made me smile. I have this huge grin on my face because I'm so proud of him.
Damn my musical heroes Prince, Jimmy Page, and Joni Mitchell all speaking in one night! It was funny though because when he started talking, you could hear a pin drop the hall got so quiet. I think people are just shocked to hear him speak (the general public anyway) since he does it so little. Exactly, great to see him happy. Also, great to see him talk for so long even though he's uncomfortable doing so. And... great to see him back in England!!! What on earth he's doing in Vegas when he could've been letting rip in... Southampton or Portsmouth or Bournmouth BIC I don't know.
