Bzzzzz!..... Camille is a 'he', not a 'she'.
The article was kinda sloppy, you see more informative stuff written on here.

The article was kinda sloppy, you see more informative stuff written on here. Though the name is supposed to come from some famous hermaphrodite... so Camille could be a he AND a she! Yet another of Prince's alter images that has 2 sides to their character.

Yet another of Prince's alter images that has 2 sides to their character. Prince has always refered to Camille as "he", and all the camille songs are sung from a strictly male perspective. The only ambiguity comes from the speeded up vocals and the name, but that says more about what the listener is reading into it. The lyrics themselves are strictly 'straight male' in orientation.

I think the ambiguity on the sex of Camille comes from Shockadelica the lines:
....and the reason is Camille she got u tied with a golden rope. Is he just mentioning this song is due to the alter-ego, and then just moving on to an unknown female Camille is involved with? Or is it "and the reason is, Camille, she got you tied."? [Edited 11/18/06 1:38am]

He never sings "and the reason is Camille, she got u tied with a golden rope"
You're taking two lines from different parts of the song and putting them together. The lyrics are... The lights go out, the smell of doom Is creepin' into your lonely room The bed's on fire, your fate is sealed And U're so tired and the reason is Camille Shockadelica, The girl must be a witch She got your mind, body, and soul hitched Shockadelica, U need a second opinion, but she never wears a stitch So U can't take her home She got U tied with a golden rope She won't let U play your guitar And when U've cried enough Maybe she'll let U up 4 a nasty ride in her shockadeli-car

Okay firstly I think the article is very brave but I do think the writer misses the point somewhat.
Of course Prince wants love and emotion - he's a human being isn't he?? Of course his music is about him. He writes songs like they ARE telling the story of his life. IF I Was Your Girlfriend is so powerful because it is him "talking" his inner thoughts to his girlfriend. H's not pretending to be a woman. It is from a mans point of view trying to gt into a womans mind. He is perplexd by her. "For you naked I would dance a ballet. Would that get you off? Well tell me what will?" He wants to know what turns her on - what makes her tick. Women love Prince because he teaches them that men have feelings too. They want connection and friendship too. Yes I agree Lovesexy does sound like a man going through a nervous breakdown. Like Kerouacs Big Sur. He is a man wrestling with himself and who he is. All his inner demons. Spooky Electric is part of him. He just doesn't understand it and he's wrestling with his own conscience. Anna Stesia is a song about loneliness. Shut up already, damn.
