Ten Reasons Prince IS Worth It 1. The instrumental at the end of "I Wanna Be Your Lover"
2. The guitar at the very beginning of "Bambi" 3. The sound of stuff getting thrown around at the end of "Gotta Broken Heart Again" 4. The rap in the middle of "Sexuality" 5. "Annie Christian". Sure it's dated. But dang. 6. That damn synth in "Lady Cab Driver". 7. The cover of the 1999 album. 8. "Ladies and Gentlemen...THEREVOLUTION!" "Dearly beloved..." 9. That place where "Computer Blue" ends and "Darling Nikki" starts. 10. Staring at the cover of ATWIAD for HOURS the day it came out. Did I only say 10? Huh. Have 10 more: 11. Disc 2, Side 2 of Sign "O" the Times 12. The live concert "video" for "America". 13. Realizing after five years of owning it that, waitaminnit, I LOVE the "Come" album. 14. Prince's crazy ass getting carried off stage in a funeral procession on Letterman. 15. Starting the show by playing guitar on a motorboat at Jones Beach. 16. "Vicki Vale...Vicki Vale..." - empty calories at their best. 17. "Purple Rain" at the Grammys. All these years later: wow. 18. "Wrecka stow, wrecka stow, wrecka stow!" 19. The 12" version of "I Wish U Heaven" 20. Just 'cuz, I guess. See? I'm not ALL pissing and moaning. Just mostly.

OK, my ten:
1. When he hit himself in the head with the mic in his performance at the American Music awards. 2. When he knocked half the stage over when playing with James Brown. 3. When he changed his name to a symbol. 4. When he sued his fans. 5. 1999- The New Master 6. When he whacked Larry over the head with his new translation before raping him. 7. When he put up the most exciting website in the world. 8. Kamasutra 9. Letting his gimpy mate play the drums on several records 10. When he stole $100 bucks off each of his die-hrad fans...twice! When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

he's worth it
for that feeling you get when he starts playing and gets that wicked little grin which says hang on here we go for the fact that he puts his heart right out into his work and offers it to strangers for their review for the respect he deserves for having created an empire out of a vision for his style for his sense of humor and quirky personality for his generosity in opening paisley park to people for parties on occasion for his ability to be a few beats ahead of everyone else creatively for the people he's inspired, cheered or guided with his art for his courage in taking on an entire, corrupt corporate world of greedy bastards who are symbolic of what's wrong with our society for the way he's weird when he's weird, but true to himself

Not that i don't agree with many of the reasons you mentioned... BUT... What's the NEW prince worth to you if the only thing that has been released 'recently' and you 'love' is the Come album? My top ten reasons why Prince is More than worth it:
10. Eighteen years of taking me to heaven. That alone has to be worth something. 9. His nerve for doing what he wants to do when he wants to do it and all else be damned. 8. That smile. 7. Everything he still has left to give. 6. When I lay my hands on U. 5. The way I feel when I hear him play. 4. The artist he is. 3. The way he makes me want to listen, not just with my ears but my entire being. 2. The way he plays that guitar. 1. His incredible live performances.

Not that i don't agree with many of the reasons you mentioned... BUT... What's the NEW prince worth to you if the only thing that has been released 'recently' and you 'love' is the Come album? Hell, even that is almost 10 years ago. Are you sure you are not stuck in the past with that 'dead' prince? What an utterly ridiculous criticism. Sorry to strike a dissonant chord with ya, but to say that Prince's worth can only be judged by his recent output is like saying Paul McCartney should only be considered truly "worth it" based on recent stuff like "Flaming Pie" or that Bowie should only be considered "worth it" based on this year's "Heathen". Maybe Ringo Starr should only be considered as an artist based on his "All Starr Band", even though I hear he was partially responsible for some kinda legendary stuff...I think Paul McCartney might have been involved too, I'm not sure.. There's nothing wrong for hinging your love of a particular artist on when their zeitgeist mattered to you, or when they resonated most to you, and I offer a big, piping mug of FUCK YOU to anyone who devalues my enjoyment of an artist based on my appreciation of a phase in their career that I happen to like more than another. If NPS does it for you, great. If "Emancipation" is your cuppa tea, super (and my "playing guitar on a speedboat" reference was from the Jam Of The Year tour, so THERE). If RAVE is your idea of The Ideal Prince Album, so be it. All these albums have moments I find interesting, but they aren't fully representative of why I like the man's work. He can do a polka album, a concept album about Smurfs featuring only xylophone and tuba; hell, he can do a cover album of Britney Spears songs for all I care - I'll listen to them, I'll appreciate them on SOME level, I'm sure, and they'll be part of my collection - but don't tell me I have to embrace them like precious little babies, because you know what? I don't have to. Period.

Hell, even that is almost 10 years ago. Are you sure you are not stuck in the past with that 'dead' prince? What an utterly ridiculous criticism. Sorry to strike a dissonant chord with ya... No problem! I thought you would get the undertone of my post, but I was not clear... please let me explain further... , but to say that Prince's worth can only be judged by his recent output is like saying Paul McCartney should only be considered truly "worth it" based on recent stuff like "Flaming Pie" or that Bowie should only be considered "worth it" based on this year's "Heathen". You misunderstood... I did not say that Prince could only be judged by his recent output. That would be ridiculous to suggest. I meant to say that it can be asked if your apparent dislike or indifference for his more recent work is at odds with your love for the prince music of old. No judging anything, nr claiming that you should like the new prince, just asking.
No there is nothing wrong with that. I actually also said that I agreed with most of the reasons you mentioned. That means that I too often hinge my love for his music on the stuff he put out in the 80's. I very well understand what you are talking about and believe me I when I say that NPS is my least favorite album! lol But... is the observation that I made correct that your taste of his music appears to have vanished after "Come" and that you do not find it worth to mention anything, any song , any tour he has done over the past 10 years,... including the both critically aclaimed and much praised ONA tour and TRC? If that is so, my question is why? Because the man has been changing all his carreer. Almost every year, everyt album he made a new turn and did something he hadn't done before. Not that it was all that exciting, especially not in the 90-'s, he nevertheless did that. And I tell you what... he did it again when he got to being the artist known as Prince again. ASnd his music changed again. Heavily indeed, since there is an ocean of distance between NPS or Rave and TRC. It is worth noting that he uses controversy music as his publishing company again without the involvement of warner Brothers. In fact I believe TRC was the first album to appear through this publisher since "old friends the Vault" AND it is titled the "controversial" new album from Prince. Plus it says: "2001, year 1 Femi Jiya and Prince. " It is furthermore praised by many including many music critics as a fantastic piece of music and a return to musical form. But on the other hand it is also loathed by many fans for lots of its lyrical contents. That's what makes it indeed a controversial NEW album from PRINCE. Then he comes with ONA... It's a small, yet intimately special album truly carrying more than just a few gems. And now perhabs a Celebration release is in store. A Celebration which is said to have been even better musically than the ONA tour... And he plays fantastic man! he plays the roof of all the theaters and he chats with fans at the soundcheck. And everybody is raving about the songs he plays and the band...I really think John Blackwell is the best drummer he could get, I reckon he can play just about any style.. And Maceo!! Maceo is the man. Many also say that Prince's voice sounds much better than in the Rave and Nps years, where his inspiration truly seemed lost. But it is now clear again that live and on record his guitarplaying is blazing again!! What more can you wish for? he is going to tour Europe and perhabs even more of the world, which he really should, perhabs even with an acoustic set. And he still plays many old songs, now even the ones who are no hits but are loved by many. he is going to rock again Anxiety, I am positive about it. In fact I personally think he is already rocking. In short so many things just seeem right, especially musically, but also lyrically, because the class musicianship and the lyrical controversy have definitly returned. I think these are very interesting times and I am sorry you seem to have such a problem with the new prince. that's basically what I am trying to say to you. No offense really. edit...ooops... the vault was the last record with warner involvement published by controversy music.
