I never felt Prince's beef with WB either. Back in the mid '80's, WB gave Prince 3 movies, more MTV promotion than any other Black artist except Michael, and, most importantly, a label deal called "Paisley Park" with carte blanche.

In '06, rappers, R & B starts, and everyone else kill themselves to "make it"- which could be defined as movies, MTV/BET exposure, and your own label (i.e. 50 Cent, Eminem, Kanye West, etc...).

To me, Prince was being greedy and in denial that his music was no longer hip and relevant as the '90's saw rap and alternative rock become mainstream.

On the other hand, what a power move! Nobody likes their label, everyone feels cheated (i.e. Sheryl Crow, George Michael, TLC, Toni Braxton, etc...). A few can sell a few more records on an indie like Koch, but most have to accept the situation for what it is. Prince, on the other hand, told WB where they can shove it, sold more records on various other Majors, and has the highest grossing tour of '04. What a damn power move! Even Michael's career went to hell after trying to buck Sony.

Stop the madness. P didn't really "make-it" until his 6th album. Those people you named had "made-it" with their first or second albums.

Eh I have to disagree with that. Based on the time periods and the state of the music industry during those time periods, i dont think you can compare the two

WB backed prince all the way,

they let him release as many albums as he wanted and he had full artistic control,

so what the hell was the problem?

bloody idiot

You shouldn't call Prince names. You can call me names, but that is a long story. Prince didn't want he thought was right at the time. So, eat worms that are black and blue with AIDS and HIVs on it. That is what poped into my head so deal w/ it for the moment. Sorry. I can get carry away sometimes. I can't help it. This shit is so funny. Were you grave or just didn't think before you typed? I can be both at times or one or the other.

Ok, fair enough. I'm talking about popularity and overall earnings. What are you referring to?

From what I heard, Prince was NOT aware that WB owned all the rights to his songs. When he did find out, He was highly pissed off. And wanted the rights back. When he didn't get them, This began the SLAVE/Symbol period of his career.

It was still his fault for not reading the contract or having the folks taking care of his busniness making sure the masters were heading the right way.

I was surprise by the support from the hip hop community (or that they even knew about is situation). I do agree that Prince was given a lot and before anyone else even got a little. What he got back in the day, brotha's are trying to get now and only a few achieve it (labels, movies, side projects, etc.) BUT what ever Prince made from WB you can believe WB made a whole lot more from Prince. I also agree with Prince about owning his masters and he should own them since he created the music but why the HELL did he sign that contract in '92????? eek He knew he was signing his masters away and he should have included them instead of worrying about the largest contract at the time $100,000,000.00 (MJ signed $65 and Janet signed $85).Do you think Prince will ever go back or try to buy his masters back? I thought he was talking about buying them back in the late 90's?

Wait, wasn't Michael's $890 million?

...The problem??? He didnt own his masters ...people who had nothing to do with some of his projects were reaping $$$ from them ..wouldnt you be pissed if you created something valuable and friends of your neighbours make money from it even years after you stop recieving royalties from YOUR creation (that you dont own ).There are people at WB who were in diapers when some of his songs were recorded and as adults they were reaping loads from them when they had nothing to do with the initial production...well some people in America would deal with that situation with a shot gun but Prince dealt with it his way.Who are we to judge ..calling him a "bloody Idiot"For defending whats his ???

Prince was fortunate enough to be signed to Warners when there were still Record Executives who cared about the artists artistic vision to a degree. His issue with Warners was primarily with the "new regime" who he said really didn't give a crap about him and the fact that he didn't have ownership of his masters. He signed with them again, realized he made a mistake. He made the decision to change his name to release material how he saw fit, to ensure that he would own his material and reap the benefits of his labor. Case closed. He was in his late thirties, life is not the same as it is in your teens & twenties. I'm not sure why that makes him an idiot? It doesn't really matter what your tax bracket is, if you're unhappy and need to make a change, then that's what you should do. Personally the "slave period" turned me off for a while, but he took a chance and sacrificed some fans to save himself, I get it...now. I haven't jumped for joy over a "Prince" album, but whether I like a song of his or not...he thinks out of the box, he still puts on great shows and he's been pretty good to his fans over the years. He is truely the master of is own destiny and is extemely respected figure in music industry. For that reason alone, I stay a fan of his. Alot of you have no idea how evil & warped the music/ entertainment industry is! You see everybody looking fabulous in the pictures, seemingly living a great life and that's it. You get alot, and you give up your life...pretty much signing you soul to the devil...if you believe in that sort of thing. A smart person figures out ways to work around these fuckers. Others just bend over, take it up the ass & smile pretty for the cameras.

...well fucking said!!! Someone had the nerve to call him an "idiot" but then join Prince related websites ..IRONIC?????

i still have no sympathy to what he did to Warners. And what a hypocrite he was. Saying music should be free, then charging his fans for mostly shitty songs online.

well Prince did give a few songs for free.

the 4 songs were

U're Still The One (cover of Shania Twain song)
Madrid 2 Chicago
One Song
Cybersingle

i think those are the only free songs he's given, i may be wrong.

..and as far as them being shitty, i think it was half and half thing. I enjoyed sum of the ones he put out.

When Eye Lay My Hands on U, Mad,Splash, Supercute,Hypno Paradise,Van Gogh,Judas Smile,Vavoom, Jukebox with a Heartbeat..didnt he also put the "MUSICOLOGY" cd on there for the members to download like a month b4 it hit stores?
[Edited 10/26/06 4:28am]

...shitty songs or not ,thats a matter of opinion...on the other hand, list 3 other artists that give away songs for free.....O.K then make that 1 ....

Is he an idiot because he no longer wanted to be a slave who should be happy to accept trinkets while someone else reaped the majority of the profits from his hard work?

No - I remember at the time it was a big deal because his Little sister signed a bigger contract. If he signed a $890 million he would be having all these problems or if the contract was set up funky he would be owing the company so much money he would be working at McDonalds.

It was P's managment that should have made sure he could have his masters.
