I'm with Anx (I think it was him, but there are too many posts to go back and check) saying this could be a really great thing to start Prince moving to the next phase of his career, as an elderstatesman of the music scene - a mentor for younger artists, encouraging them to grow without just dominating them all by writing/producing everything as he has in the past. I think this is really promising, and with real Vegas money and Pepsi behind it, I don't think the moneyminders will let it fail in the way it might if it was a Prince/NPG Records project.
I also love seeing the again - yes, his name is Prince again, but most people know that =Prince, and those that don't are curious about what is - symbols and logos are increasingly important in pop culture, so it's a good move to use this in publicity - I would love to see it on the Rio as it's shown in the opening shot on 3121.com, since that would be shown on TVs and news websites around the world, but I don't know if that's feasible. Maybe a searchlight like the batsignal - the "Princesymbolsignal" - to be used whenever Prince is playing that night - just how the Union Jack is raised at whichever residence the Queen is using each day I think it would be great for this to do well and keep going even when Prince is touring the country/world - get some real passive income so he can take some major risks again.

I don't quite understand the "sell out" comments. Prince's shows have been sponsored way back since,... It's not just Prince. Most shows have a "corporate" sponsor. The musicians get some financial backing and the corporates get advertising in exchange. It's a win-win for the musicians and the sponsor. That's just the way it works.

What is going on?? I noticed on quite a few of these fan sites that some fans are stating that according to the artists that Prince is showing on his 3121 website, there are no “rock” acts or should I say, not enough “White” acts--which is what you really mean when you mention “lack of diversity”. I’d like to know since when does “rock” means you have to be “Non-Black” to play it? JDavey has what could be categorized as a “rock” sound, Prince has played rock for years as well as Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, they’re not “White”, but they have that “rock” sound in their music.. Esthero is White, and her music is described as blues/jazz/.light rock/soul/hip-hop/neo-soul, her music is extremely diversified, and she’s a White artist, a very good one at that.
So what is this about a “lack of diversity” that some are asking on some of these sites?. Bottom line, like I said, the real question they want to ask Prince is “Where are the White Artists Prince?” let’s not front. If you’re looking for a rock sound then don’t limit that “rock” sound to an artist’s race, anyone can play rock, not just White Artists. If the new site www.3121.com flashed Black Artists who played “rock” across the screen instead of Black R&B/Neo-soul acts even with a White artist included (Esthero), would your opinion have been different or would you have made those same comments about the “the lack of diversity?” You’ve heard the rumors that Prince will be in Vegas for a period of time bringing established acts, which already have a fan base, along with other new acts. See this is the same thing that happened when he introduced Tamar, the same type of atmosphere and negative comments from some of you. It’s almost as if unless Prince is surrounded by more “White” artists or someone that makes you “feel safe”( and you know exactly what I mean by that comment) regardless of what type of music that White artist is into, then it would be ok and you’d praise Prince. So why is it when Prince surrounds or chooses artists of his own race and present them to some of you, the criticism of Prince runs rampant at some of these sites? This is when the “true colors” of Prince’s fans comes out, and it’s a shame. I certainly hope you give Prince a chance and wait to see what other artists he plans on bringing to the Rio, because it is sad that it seems Prince is accepted more by his white fans if he plays more rock and associates himself with more White Artists. Yes, we’ve heard remarks from some fans, that in the past Prince’s Black fans abandoned him during the Purple Rain days, that was never true. Black fans of Prince have been there in full force from the beginning and we will always be there, we have never left him, and we will be there until the end. . I will say this, if there is an artist out there that I like, regardless of their race, you better believe I will support and buy their music, because “music is just that, music” it can't be defined as a “color or race” and no form of music is limited to one particular race, and I really hope some of you take the time to learn that.. Have a wonderful and positive day and I’ll see you in Vegas! ----- "If you gave someone a million dollars they would still complain that it isn't enough, seems one can never be satisfied, because there's always that one person that loves to complain" [Edited 10/26/06 8:55am] [Edited 10/26/06 8:56am] [Edited 10/26/06 8:58am]

He's bringing a big show to Las Vegas... that's wonderful news! I'm ready to get my tickets and enjoy a show. I'm really getting tired of all the negativity whenever any news is posted about his performing plans... Prince - some wise words from Ricky Nelson: "You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself" Yeah, I quoted Ricky Nelson - another thing for folks to bitch about... |

i only have one complaint and that is that there will be so many
cool performances and i probably won't get to hear even a third, or a quarter of them, just like the 3121 parties last year..... on all other count: for prince. who cares at this point, just let the man do what he enjoys and if he makes some $ with that - all the more power to him. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Great post! this is going to cost me but I'M GOING! I have been a fan since '84 and only went to a concert in 2006 that was the Tamar show. I missed everything and I'm going to go and get my party on!

I see Patti Labelle, The Roots, Esthero, Mint Condition - each one of these artists has a sound/style that is different from the other one, which represents diversity to me. Again...they're not white....(Excluding Estero...LOL) [Edited 10/26/06 9:47am] are you directing this comment towards my views? are you implying racism on my part? Space for sale...

can we, like, ixnay on the acebaitingray?
ok, prince is going for a certain demographic. great. fine. whatEVER. do we care that gilley's caters to a country & western lovers' demographic or do we drag mickey gilley through the mud? do we care that lollapalooza is too gen-x-centric and doesn't offer enough to baby boomer music fans, or do we get out the tar and feathers for perry farrell? is it a good thing that CBGBs closed down becuase it didn't cater fully to the needs of NYC's urban music community? people start venues like this because they want their passions to be realized and they want a place for the music they love. that's all prince is doing. these artists are where his head's at right now. he wants to have a space for them to play for big audiences. maybe 15 years ago he woulda chosen bjork and cocteau twins, but his head's not in that place anymore. maybe it never was. it's nothing complicated. if he started a vegan restaurant, would people get mad cuz they couldn't buy steak? either eat the damn tofu or go to sizzler!

[Edited 10/26/06 9:08am] the truth? im just sharing my opinion...and you are too...there is no truth to be debated. and why are you bringing up lenny kravitz and did i see a hendrix reference? all my initial comment was in reference to was *this* topic. and thats why i said, "your thinking to hard"...cause your making a much bigger deal out of this then what it is. Not really,I mentioned Hendrix and Kravitz as an example of "rock" artists, because the following question has been asked here and at other sites: "Where are the "rock" artists" and most reference "rock" to white artists, and basically in the real world, they really mean "Gee Prince, where are the white artists?" I just didn't dance around the issue when I posted this, that's all. As far as you stating "there is no truth to be debated" well certainly there is, because apparently some fans are disappointed that they didn't see more "white artists" appear on Prince's 3121 site with artists he plans on having at the Rio, and that's the "truth" Ruth, take it or leave it or enjoy another post , you have that choice. When I made that post, I expected criticism, no biggy, I can handle it but in the meantime, I will just enjoy and relish in the fact that I am happy with Prince's decision to do the Vegas thing! Who he chooses to play there is fine with me! Rock, R&B, Neo-Soul, Jazz, bring it on! It's all music! [Edited 10/26/06 11:28am]
