So Prince is neo-soul now? wtf?

he's been dipping a toe into the neo-soul pool since around the time of NPS...plus, i've noticed most younger neo-soul artists cite him as an influence/pioneer of the genre.

yes, and primarily because of the ballad of dorothy parker

Hi Mamasita! What's shaking!!! biggrin

I'm so elated that Prince is bringing some really good artists to Vegas. I can't wait to see what else is up his sleeve. I think everyone should wait and see what other artists will be performing there before we make assumptions from what the initial lineup is. I bet there'll be something for everyone, just wait and see. I don't think he is targeting a certain demographic at all. Rumor has it that he'll be there from 6 months to 1 year and he's always looking for new artists, so I really think it will all work out for everyone. A tablespoon of patience is a good thing. lol

It seems that he wants a certain vibe to the "club".

I just don't see the "its a shame" take on this. I think its this same ole vibe that r&b, neo-soul is somehow less than rock.

These ARE talented ppl in the line up.

If had Justin Wissylake, then let's start crying.

my lord...my one lil comment keeps getting misinterpreted...STOP IT!!!

lol

and no way in hell am i saying that neo-soul is les then rock...im just saying i like prince when he melds extremes into his music...but that this group is kinda the same vibe prince has been following for some time now...and that for me, its a shame there isn't more diversity taking part...

thats all...i love the idea prince is doing this...i think its cool...if i didn't hate vegas i soo would be there myself.

but, i am not saying the list of talent participating in this event is a shame...like anxiety's pic eluded to, im just dreaming outloud...

and there aint nothing wrong with that.

cool

but I didn't say that you said that though....i was commenting on the general flow of the conversation PLUS other threads on this site.

so shut it up!! lol hug

I don't think we are disagreeing at all, apart from the 'interesting idea' bit. Really the only 'interesting' thing with this project is instead of just some everyday act booker booking acts, it is Prince booking the different acts. The club/hotel gets the advantage of it being Prince in the sense that if he rings up an artist and invites them to play, they are very unlikely to refuse.

Precisely what Prince gets out of this I don't know; and precisely what do the Prince fans get out of this on nights it isn't Prince or a related act playing? Booking cool acts will keep the club running and interest non-Prince fan tourists, so for the large part its association with Prince seems a bit pointless to me. Certainly many people are going to go hearing about the association with Prince and maybe expecting he will be wandering around or joining the group on stage, and being disappointed when he's not there.

Many of these acts could easily get a gig in Vegas off their own back; it's just because Prince has personally asked them they're turning upto to this particular gig. So it is an insight into what music Prince likes right now but not much more.

Hey, I'm down for some real constructive criticism...For real...But I think on this one, you are thinking way too hard...There's no insight needed...The man is just putting together a roster of acts to perform at a nightclub...He want's to make some money, but at the same time he wants to do it on his own terms. It aint rocket science...Las Vegas is a lucrative business, and the midget wants in...Personally, I find the lineup interesting because a lot of the names are not "Las Vegas" acts...That's what I mean by interesting...To have J Davey and The Roots on the same roster as Patti Labelle and Chaka Khan is a curve pitch... You think J Davey could easily get a gig??? I'll let you think about that....

To have J Davey and The Roots on the same roster as Patti Labelle and Chaka Khan is a curve pitch... You think J Davey could easily get a gig???

You are right on point with that one!

ok, prince is going for a certain demographic. great. fine. whatEVER.

do we care that gilley's caters to a country & western lovers' demographic or do we drag mickey gilley through the mud?

do we care that lollapalooza is too gen-x-centric and doesn't offer enough to baby boomer music fans, or do we get out the tar and feathers for perry farrell?

is it a good thing that CBGBs closed down becuase it didn't cater fully to the needs of NYC's urban music community?

people start venues like this because they want their passions to be realized and they want a place for the music they love. that's all prince is doing. these artists are where his head's at right now. he wants to have a space for them to play for big audiences. maybe 15 years ago he woulda chosen bjork and cocteau twins, but his head's not in that place anymore. maybe it never was.

it's nothing complicated. if he started a vegan restaurant, would people get mad cuz they couldn't buy steak? either eat the damn tofu or go to sizzler! nuts

agreed 100%...but as a consumer and lover of music i think we all have the right to express our own opinion on the project...ya know what i mean?

i kinda wish i could take back my comment because i didnt really think it would cause such a stir...or are you talking about other folk's discussions? im confused... nuts

i'm talking about the general tenor of some of the digressions in this thread. to be honest, i'm not even looking at names, nor am i interested in assigning "blame" to individuals. i'm more locked into the content than the personalities behind them. that's usually my way, because i am lazy.

i find that as a consumer of music, the most powerful way of telling an artist i do not like their product is by not giving them money for it and not taking any steps to help them promote it. prince never promised we could have it our way...in fact, i think he's promised quite the opposite over the years.

to be perfectly honest, 3121 doesn't look to be my cuppa tea. i'm still a fan. it doesn't make me dig 'controversy' or 'come' any less. i'm always gonna fam out in my own way. if someday he comes around and goes back into his funky bohemian mode and makes confoundingly beautiful music again, i will be in MEGAFAM mode, and i shall fam out with a power the likes of which you people could never predict. till then, hopefully this whole thing that he's on about will reach who it's supposed to reach and it will be a success. i'll be sitting this one out like i did the last time he was in vegas. it just ain't me. shrug

People! What's with all the politics and inquiries into the big picture! Instead of disecting everything the man does, fucking be excited about the prospect of seeing him live again!

He's bringing a big show to Las Vegas... that's wonderful news! I'm ready to get my tickets and enjoy a show.

I'm really getting tired of all the negativity whenever any news is posted about his performing plans...

Prince - some wise words from Ricky Nelson: "You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself"

Yeah, I quoted Ricky Nelson - another thing for folks to bitch about... sigh

Great post! this is going to cost me but I'M GOING! I have been a fan since '84 and only went to a concert in 2006 that was the Tamar show. I missed everything and I'm going to go and get my party on!

I hear ya! I'll see you there! razz

well, that's why it's an opinion and that's why we throw it out there - to see if it sticks, holds water, falls flat, or winds up biting us on the ass. just cuz my opinion belongs to me doesn't mean i believe it's impervious or correct. it's kinda like when you learn things.
