"why in gods name do you want to make me cry" yes, more heart-rending desperation in this album. dark, brooding, and miles better than purple rain. In places.

A great one to boot. Plus, it took me years to figure out that Lisa was answering all of his questions during his monologue. Absolutley fucking brilliant record that still holds up, and he did it all himself, overdub upon overdub. Smoke a joint and spin this bastard with some headphones and you'll hear a thousand things you never noticed before. Back in the day, I would pull a few tubes of thick smoke, strap on my headphones and listen to this record from beginning to end. Sometimes I even miss that feeling. Honestly, name ONE shitty song on the whole record outside of the last one (and by then I was ready to fall asleep anyhow). "Lady Cab Driver", "DMSR", "Little Red Corvette", "Automatic" are pure genious. "Something in the Water" is deceptively hypnotic....It's almost like the album sneaks up on you. It SOUNDS simple, and structually it IS, but there are layers upon layers of sounds and tricky "punctuation " that catch you off guard and always come in at EXACTLY the right moment and change the basic nature of the song JUST ENOUGH to keep you rolling along with it. In a nutshell, it's "simply complex". A masterstroke, a benchmark and a timeless classic for those willing to REALLY listen to and penetrate it. I listen to it NOW and still hear new things. Did I mention I love this record? I agree on almost everything. Except that I do love "INTERNATIONAL LOVER" it is my 3rd favourite song off of 1999. U didn't say U hated it, though. I love this record so much. It is my favourite Prince, '80s and one of my alltime favourite records.

My thoughts on this album are well-known here, but I'll say it again: this album is perfect. It is the pinnacle of music to me. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I love 1999 - As someone said earlier, Dirty Mind and Controversy were important in laying the ground work, but 1999 really revealed a genius at work.
It's so, so close to a perfect record, but two things hold it back - The questionable production (even Dirty Mind sounds so much bolder and clearer) and "Free," which has always been a weak song in my eyes. Still, it's a spectacular effort, and Let's Pretend We're Married remains probably my favorite Prince song ever.

Emancipation, 1999 and Sign O The Times are his best IMO

Alan leeds even commented that Prince's albums suffer sonically becuase Prince was impatient and didn't record them properly.
