3121 - the Song

I admit, when I first listened to this song I didn't like it and would skip over it. But I gave it a good listen and I think this song is funky as hell! I didn't particularly like the live version on BET Award show, but I do love the studio version.

Anyone agree, or disagree?

I do my favorite song on the CD (well, except for maybe The Dance).
I wish the whole CD was as funky as 3121 the song.....

It seems everyone had a similar experience.

When I first heard it, I thought "Okay, this is weird."

I expected something like the song "Musicology", as the title track/opener of the record,

but I was delighted to hear something kinda disjointed and funky!

I love the vocal effects and different weird sounds.

I like the verses, but the chorus is kinda amateurish.

He'd already gone down the "party people" road too many times.

Really, this is the only track on the album that I truly dig. It definately sounds like something P wrote and perhaps even cut much earlier. But the chorus where he half sings is classic P. It reminds me of his Parliament styled purple funk from the 80's. That's why I dig it so much.

Well, what about "life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last"?

3121, to me, could mean the year 3121...and, can you answer the "?" if you will be here or not?

and, if you are/will be here in 3121, will you know that you were here in 2006?

parties are great. but, i seem to remember reading that Prince thought breaking the cycle of life and death is something that he was very interested around 1993 +/- a few years. we know the real party when we are aware, or 1 is aware, of who they really are.

still don't like it

overall the song is ok, but the chorus just drags, sounds like he just lost interest in the song halfway through singing it.

loved it from the first hearing, it's so dramatic, and cool, and then I loved the live version too, the doubling of female and male vocals + robot vocoder funk voice ( on the 3121) sounds good, the performance was too cool for that show.

It is not really a song. It is a melonge of noises and weird effects. You want great songwriting with tricky melodies, go to Crystal Ball, the song instead. Pure genius there.

I agree 3121 is an unbelievably funky song. I love how says, "Hey, mammy. We loco, right?" I loved this song the first time that I listened to it. The day I bought my first copy of this masterpiece of an album, I was feeling really down.

This one had to grow on me. I thought it a bit strange and to use someone else's word disjointed, but later discovered that's the beauty of it. Personally, the Prince songs the have to grow on me are the ones BECOME my favorites by him!

It was just another new classic to me! I tend to like his mystery trip scifi funk songs the best on a first listen.

Oh, I love it, and always did. The second I heard that beat, I rejoiced and thought "Yes! New Prince is no longer boring."

Yeah, he does. I love the whole album because Prince allowed his lusty spirit to guide him in every track of this upbeat and lively album.

It's the only innovative song of the whole album.
The rest are ordinary pop songs.
