The Masterpieces

Is there a Prince song that is not apart of the "Best Of" collection that you consider a masterpiece.

I'm talking about a song that perhaps only the average Prince fan would know.

I'm going to start off with the Rainbow Children song. Apart from that voice, I love the guitar solo and how he used the choir to build up the song dramactically then it ends with a wicked instrumental piece that starts of mellow then ends with an another incredible guitar solo.
I also liked the way he used the lyrics.

Anyone else want to share. I'm trying to build up a collection lesser known "masterpieces" other than the ones that usually get released on boxsets.

There's a lot of them. To start with, "Crystal Ball" and "Joy in Repetition" are definitely masterpieces.

Thanks. Believe or not I have yet to get the Crystall Ball CD. It's on my list. Joy in Repetition is a good one, especially the live One Night Alone version.

I think there's a lot of 'em... Some good ones listed above.

The thing about Prince is, IMO, his best released work isn't usually what he has chosen to release as singles. So the general public know the Prince of Little Red Corvette, Gett Off, Cream, Purple Rain fame... where as I'd say the more interesting, stuff, that hooked a lot of us in, lay just under that radar... And these songs are classics, that could have performed fantastically well as commercial singles.

I agree. Like with Sign O'times and even 3121, where he should have released Fury first IMO.

Well depending on which Best of you're using. If its the latest two, mine would be:

When U Were Mine (possibly his greatest pop song)
Head
Sexuality
The Beautiful Ones
Erotic City
Girls & Boys
Mountains (12" version)
Sometimes It Snows In April
The Cross
Crucial
Last Heart
Crystal Ball

In fact i could go on. If you consider however that The beautiful ones, Girls & boys, Mountains, SISIA & The Cross have never been on ANY "best of" compilation (I dont count Girl 6), that is pretty goddamn awful as IMO theya re among his best works.
