Y Didn't Prince & Freddy Mercury Happen?

Prince if we know, has made many collabartions with Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Chuck D and many of his female students, ie/ Shawia Twain, Martika etc.

I hate it when they say his gutiar playin is infulenced by Jimi Hendrix. When listened properly it is not even in the same vibe. He is more infulenced like Santana, but im sure u'll all agree Prince playin is more individualistic and is own!

As for his voice, he is very talented and has been in many key. Freedy was said recently on TV and by many critics as havin the greatest voice in rock & roll and leavin even elvis behind.

I mean most of Princes carrer, starting from his first Live Adult style shows, 'Dirty Mind' the whole stage setup and style was freedy Mercury. He would even pose like Freddy in pictures.

The whole reason y i was shocked dat Prince never collaborated with Freddy was
it HAD 2 happen, 2 of the greatest songwriters and best live performers for over 30 years, just as prolific.

Like what Prince said 2 Miles, 'U and Me Think A Like, Lets meet', and so Miles in the Park.

I would only say Prince and Freddy were most a like.

I think if it happen, the press would slander it. N00bs.

I do hate how they always focus on Freddy and almost completely leave the talents of the rest of the band out of the picture. The other members of Qeeen wrote many of their famous hits and all together they were a force to be reckoned with, but of course the media can never get beyond lead singers.

Prince just isn't the type to work closely with other big artists. His involvement with Miles Davis was actually quite minimal, a bit like with Kate Bush it mostly involved just sending tapes back and forth. Even with Stevie Wonder his only on record involvement is a bit of guitar on What The Fuss. I just don't think Prince likes bashing heads with other big egos. Besides, I don't see that Freddy had much in common with Prince beyond singing and songwriting and occasionally wearing garish clothing and a moustache. Why is it that every big star HAS to work with the other big stars around?

I was suprised even to find MJ worked with Freddy initially on State Of Shock, didn't see that one coming.

Well, first off, I gotta state; Hate is a very strong word. Why hate that P gets compared to Hendrix? Trust me, P doesn't. P always WANTED folks to compare him to Jimi. He actually made career decisions to be compared to Hendrix. His guitar solo stylings, his clothes, his posturing while he's playing guitar, him naming his debut movie "Purple Haze". Oooops, I do mean "Purple Rain". Of course, P is also heavily influenced by Santana as he is by many other guitarists, including Freddie Mercury's bandmate, Brian May. But yeah, I agree with u on the thing about P being influenced by Freddie. As a pianist and visually. Especially 70's Queen.

Listen if u wann know the truth Jimi cant ever compare with the sales of Queen and there much longer carrer and much more varied genres of music.

Jimi at best has a average voice and non-existant dancer. All he is know 4 is a guitarist, his guitar sounds rusty and of tune.

Id think Prince would be happier and ego boostin if he was compared 2 Freddy.

It's obvious that u don't like Hendrix and that's fine. I happen to be a big fan of Queen. I don't have to knock someone and say shit that's not valid just because I don't like someone. But whatever. U have your opinion like I do.

Perhaps because MJ worked with Mr Bulsara first? whistling

Surely to heck '3 Chains O' Gold' is a nod to Queen and their most famous song though? I can't believe anyone would possibly argue any different.

First of all Im sure if ur fair most of u'll agree dat Jimi or very, very few can compare freddy. I mean im sayin Freddy is more like prince than Jimi or others.

I mean like Prince, Queen were totally uncommercial, just look at the videos, even though Bohemain Rapsardy was before its time, lyrically. and the genres it was, and the never saw video was heavily infulenced by the song, meanin the song dictated the revolutary video.

Im sayin Prince is more like Freddy.

I think you are wide of the mark...I think at the root of Prince is a guitar player. When he's stuck he'll jam...and invariable he'll touch on Jimi's styles. Jimi is always in his head even though he'll not not admit it. He's covered Jimi songs, and written songs that sound just like Jimi :just listen to habibi! And as someone already pointed out, his entire persona on guitar, including outfits for Purple Rain were straight out of Jimi. He invited jimi comparisons, because he wanted to be associated with one of his idols, but casually dismissed the link when mentioned in typical Prince arrogance. To be honest, the only time I ever thought of Freddy when listening to Prince was 3 chain of gold and I've never seen anything in common between them on stage.

I always thought early Prince was influenced far more by Mick Jagger - I hear so much influence of his vocals throughout dirty mind/controversy era.

Well, u know what? If P was so determined NOT to get compared to Hendrix, then he should have knocked off all of the copying he did off of Hendrix. There is no way in hell Prince could have been that concerned with being compared to Hendrix when he was so clearly copying him. Prince wanted his cake and eat it too, that's all. He wanted to bite off of Hendrix so that would draw him attention from the rock media but then at the same time, he tried to pretend why he couldn't understand why the critics were blasting him for biting off of Jimi in the first place. "Oh, boo hoo. I'm more like Santana." Oh yeah, well how come you weren't DRESSING like Santana and ACTING like Santana and naming your songs with titles like "Black Magic Rain"? That's one thing I gotta give credit to a cat like Andre 3000. You'll never here him say some stupid shit like "Oh, I don't know WHY they compare me to Prince or Parliament....Don't they know I'm more into Waylon Jennings?". Andre sticks to his guns and don't deny his influences where as Prince wanted all the kiddies from the early 80's to think that HE was the o.g. of all the shit he was doing. That shit may have fooled a lot of kids back then, but not moi. I KNEW who he was biting off of and why. Just, if you're going to borrow from a great like Hendrix, don't be a sissy bitch about it if someone calls u on it. Be a man about it and instead of denying the Hendrix influence, say "Hell yeah, I dig the shit out of Hendrix." and keep on stepping.

Feel bad? Are u serious? It's nothing on this site and DEFINATELY not from any posts that u should feel bad from. We're just posting opinions. If someone states something that u just so happens to agree with, then cool. If not, then still cool. Trust me, I know u were being sarcastic, but...It's nothing that serious on here where the tit for tat vibe goes down. At least, to me, it isn't. Just expressing thoughts. Oh, I agree witcha'. P would be a stone fool to sit up and try to deny Jimi's influence on him. I remember during the height of Purple Rain, P started getting the covers of all of these rock magazines like Creem and Circus, which I thought was cool. Untill I see the articles written about P inside. With out fail, they would have a large picture of Jimi right alongside of P, where the pictures would damn near be identical. Same pose, same headband, same ruffled shirt, etc. The magazines were basically spoofing on P for copying Hendrix and at the same time, giving him coverage. But, although I didn't like the backhanded compliment they were giving P, all the pictures they were showing of Hendrix and P couldn't be denied. That's like a white male vocalist coming out, damn near dressed like Elvis in Vegas, and doing the same poses and same smirk, he would get laughed out of town.

ok because I didn't want you to think that I was an asskisser or anything, I felt like with the previous reply you were coming at me kinda harsh...but the points you were making were very valid however, I want you to know that. I was actually pointing out what PRince said about Hendrix to make the point that he appeared to be trying to distance himself from that comparison, yet he dressed like him, etc. However, I don't really feel it's fair to accuse Prince of biting Hendrix and trying to hide it at the same time. Although now that I think abou it, I don't know what else it could've been.

And your impression was correct. That's why I posted the magazines "were basically spoofing P" and it all was a bunch of "backhanded compliments". Yeah, they were definately poking fun at P, which I didn't like. But at the same time, I couldn't defend him, cuz all of their points were on target. Basically, they were trying to make him pay for becoming so successful by taking so much from Hendrix.
