3121-revisted

Okay, I've been listening to a lot of previews of some artists with new CDs coming out and has just been released, and one thing that keeps coming to mind with music now-a-days is how FORGETTABLE these songs are. It's like some of the songs are okay and catchy but that's it. I listened to some CDs and I can't even recall some of the songs now because they all seem to sound the same after a while.

I'm wondering if we have given 3121 enough chance. I'm speaking more to those who don't like the CD. Yes it may not be Prince's best work and maybe he was playing it safe, but there's really nothing forgettable about Fury, Black Sweat, Love, The Dance, The Word.

Overall, looking back now, in comparison to what's out there, do you now feel that 3121 is not a bad CD after all?

i keep wondering if maybe prince isn't going to revisit 3121 himself by the end of the year. i know he wants to keep promotion of that album going despite the less than stellar relationship he has/had with universal...could this mean a "3121: remixed, revisited, reloaded" kinda project?

I've written here before about the possibility of having 3121 re-released. I don't know, the more I hear Lolita live and that Black Sweat Versace remix, just had me thinking about how good this CD may be after all. I just think this year was very strange on the releases and lack of promotion may have killed the momentum. and its a shame because I believe the CD has pretty good and "unforgettable" tracks. biggrin

if he's really doing the three-month vegas residency, he could sell the re-tooled 3121 as an exclusive at the venue, then re-release it properly around the time of the superbowl just in time to tour. shrug

I liked it from the beginning and while I do not listen to it as much, it is still growing on me.

BL&B
TEC
The Dance
Black Sweat
Love
Fury
The Word (Minus the chorus)

All very very solid songs, a couple will make my all time list.

The cd as a whole is just average, but song by song it's really good. And I think that shows by the number of them he played live, despite almost never playing live this year.

A few changes and it could have been a classic. And I think it could still be revived with a good single.

One of my favorite albums of this year! Definitely a more accomplished effort than what Musicology was and every joint was a winner in my opinion.

You know what? Even when he is "just average" Prince is putting out B+ albums especially when compared to other pop/rock artists. I feel the same with 3121.

I have taken a break from 3121. However little songs will creep up into my head (didn't happen with the last one) like Incense and Candles and Love and The Word.

I think 3121 would have been a bigger success had it been promoted properly.

Wow !!! That´s amazing...you seem to like EXACTLY the same songs that I like on that album and you also stressed out that you like The Word except for the chorus...just like me on another thread...only difference is that I like the title song ( because it has that Micheal B / Sonny T punch...not for the lyrics).

I agree. Compared to other albums this year, 3121 is really good. Compared to other Prince albums, it's just alright. I enjoy it but, it probably wouldn't make my top ten Prince CDs.

We're in the same boat. I still love 3121 but I played that badboy out! It's great to have a Prince album that you can really enjoy from start to finish again.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I agree. If the Universal problems hadn't happened and his personal life wasn't all mucked up we may have had another tour like the Musicology tour (by that I mean huge and very successful).

I really like the title song also, especially the beginning. For some reason though, I hate it when prince uses the term "Party" these days, sounds too contrived. He is too bright to talk about "Party here", and "this is the Party", seems to contrived: Prince won me over in many songs with metaphors. That said LOVE the scratchy funky guitar after the "Let's Go" near the beginning and the freakiness of the sounds used throughout.

3121 is the album you want your momma to meet... musicology was a tad better. it had an slightly better jagged edge to it. the best is yet to come. 3121 revisited-yes. my ears are tuned into that 3121 song.. maybe i'm the only one?

why not? he managed to polish a turd with the RAVE remix CD...and 3121 is a few levels above turd status, so it could be even better the second time around. shrug

You and I are hearing a different album then. Give me an example of "the rest of them r&b folks" that come close to sounding as diverse as 3121. Can they do "fury"? Nope.
