UPDATE! Info on Rio prices & Prince will book entertainment Ok, all you guys who were freaking out about the prices being $3121 or $312, now you can relax! I am SO going to be visiting Vegas more frequently!!
http://www.reviewjournal....57410.html A spy tells me Prince will be in charge of booking Club Rio entertainment. Most nights there will be a $30 cover charge; on nights that he jams with the groups he brings in, the fee will rise to $125. ... http://www.reviewjournal....34073.html Prince fans soon may be partying like it's 1999. A Web site connected to Prince is hinting that his rumored Rio headliner deal is done. Since Monday, his www.3121.com Web site -- a reference to his "3121" album -- has been showing only a red-and-blue graphic in the shape of the Rio. Recent sightings of Prince at the Rio and elsewhere with Harrah's executives have fueled the rumors, and he's known for sending cryptic clues to his fans. "It looks good. Take it to the bank," said a source close to the Prince camp. (my emphasis) [Edited 10/5/06 2:49am]

That's gonna seriously cut down on who can see him live and who can't because the prices at the Rio are outrageous and you have to be 18 or 21 to get into those nighclubs on the strip, not to mention you can't see a decent show in Vegas for under 100 dollars. He's really been telling his fans to Kiss it these last few months.

It's going to happen. He'll be taking over Club Rio for awhile. You can hear a few more details in Five Hundy by Midnight podcast #86. [Edited 10/4/06 3:36am]

It isn't permanent and lots of folks can't see him when he tours because he doesn't come close to their town and people bitch then too. So, for a few months, we can go to him. How is he telling his fans to kiss it when he's going to be performing regularly?? The facts of life are that sometimes you're not old enough to do some things. I know it sucks, but should everyone else who is of age not have the chance because some are too young? Kids usually can't get into aftershows either, should he stop doing those too?

Prince has toured on & off for 25 years & now he would like to try it from one central location instead of living out of suitcases & catching planes every other day.. Give the guy a break - he wants to try something different. Fans that think he is being selfish are the fans he doesn't need.

personally, i'd rather see him in mpls than lv
that town has a way of messing with the minds of artists though, on the hand, i think he has plans to do some mind-messing himself "sin" city may never be the same [Edited 10/4/06 11:05am]

Well said! | |

Bottom line is that he had the biggest tour and made the most tour money a couple of years ago so he knows that people will go see him.
Now, take out the cost of travel and he is going to make a killing. I have no problem with him doing this and if anything, it gives me yet another reason (not that I need one) to go back to Vegas again, and again..... Later Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

Yeah, I don't see why people are getting into such a huff about this. Yeah, it will cost more to go to Vegas and see him, but it doesn't sound like it is going to be a permanent thing at all. So, if you don't have the $$ then don't go and wait for him to tour.
Yeah, I know it sucks for you young ones, but if you are under 18 should your mama be letting you listen to Prince anyway?! Joking aside, there are just some things under 21 year olds can't do. We've all been there. Get over it. You can see him on tour if you want.

Found this article also, not sure if this was posted already, matter of fact just noticed the article was dated 9/11, so sorry if this was posted already:
From reviewjounal.com NORM: Changes may be a-coming in LV CLARIFICATION ON 09/13/06 -- It was misstated in Norm Clarke’s “Vegas Confidential” column on Monday that Liza Minnelli appeared at the inaugural Human Rights Campaign dinner on Saturday at the MGM Grand. She was scheduled to be the keynote speaker and recipient of the group’s National Equality Award, but she was a no-show. Liza Minnelli is honored with award. Dennis Rodman spreads his wealth. Prince may be a Vegas headliner. Click image for enlargement. Big changes are coming from Harrah's, a name that may soon be all but disappearing. Spies close to the weekend meetings of Harrah's brand managers and governmental relations brass at the Flamingo say it's highly likely that: Advertisement • Harrah's corporate name will switch to Caesars, because of the international strength of Caesars' brand. • Bally's will be rebranded as Horseshoe. • There's a good chance a center Strip pedestrian retail, restaurant and entertainment environment will be created from the corner of Flamingo Road to the south end of The Venetian. On Harrah's entertainment side, don't be surprised to see headliner deals announced soon, with Prince and Chris Tucker. LOCAL FLAVOR Bravo's second season of "Top Chef" will again rely on a significant Las Vegas flavor when it premieres Oct. 18. Four Las Vegans will be among the 15 competing in the reality show. Marcel Vigneron, who says he tends to be bossy in the kitchen, is a master cook at Joel Robuchon at The Mansion (MGM Grand). The bio of Emily Sprissler of Nob Hill (MGM Grand) says her skills include imitating any foreign accent. Otto Borsich, who attended the Las Vegas Culinary Institute, unsuccessfully tried out for the first season. He claims to be a pirate at heart and once served as a cook onboard a nuclear submarine. Elia Aboumrad, who has earned 34 culinary degrees, trained in Robuchon's kitchen in Paris. She's a whiz with chocolate. [Edited 10/4/06 12:21pm]

pkidwell said: interesting listen....thanks for the link.....sounds cool like he will be playing at Rio a few nights a week while booking other acts the rest of the week....i wonder if Tamar will be back for that? and it also sounds like his deal is not specific on how long he will be there meaning he can quit whenever and start playing whenever for his performances.....perfect for Prince huh?
I had a blast with you in Vegas so don't be surprised if I come back! I think it's a great setup for him. It's not as exhausting as touring, his costs will be much less and he'll have a whole city of vacationers looking to be entertained. After the first reviews come in he'll be one of the hottest tickets in town. As someone said earlier, this ain't exactly your parent's Vegas anymore. The guy has been coming to us for nearly 30 years, so for a few months people can come to him for a change. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

bumping for the update...
This also should help quiet the Vegas Lounge act crap that some thought would be the case, since he's not going to be performing all the time. Give it a chance, you might like it. [Edited 10/5/06 2:10am]

Sounds like a nice idea.
A bit like the old Glam Slam clubs, Paisley Park, and what he was talking about doing at The Astoria in London. I just wish it was somewhere "cooler", like New York. Las Vegas just seems a bit cheesey, but there'll be regular visitors (tourists) to fill the place every night. It would be more difficult in New York or London on a rainy Tuesday night !!

Sure there's cheese in Vegas, just like there is in NY. But, Club Rio is hardly cheesy, it's very cool. Also, NY is way too cold in the winter and a LOT more expensive. [Edited 10/5/06 3:31am]

I kept saying that he's turning into a lounge singer.
I'd go to Vegas to see him. It'll actually be a good thing so you can sorta plan ahead.

Well, freezing is subjective to how much of a sissy one might be...70 degrees is sweather weather to me! (I just checked your weather and it's 58, now that is FREEZING!!) But, what is SO telling about this thread is there's been 200+ views with 5 or so posts since it was updated. People can't freak out about the prices, so now you can hear crickets. If the prices were the $312 thing, all hell would have broken loose. But, since they're totally reasonable, where are all those people saying 'hey, those aren't bad!'? [Edited 10/5/06 10:58am]

Well said! I second that! absolutely....I could'nt have said it better. I love Vegas and the Rio is the place 2 be. The food is excellent, entertainment is great, beautiful hotel that sits off 2 itself, home of Chippendales (male men exotic dancers) for those interested in those hard bodies . All rooms are luxury suites. When I went 2 Vegas we hit all the hotels and partied big time, but the Rio was the one that I loved the most. They have everything going on there. Once u go 2 the Rio u really don't have 2 go anywhere else and they seem 2 draw the crowd. They had more people hanging out there then any other fabulous hotel we went 2. Serena u make such a wonderful view on Prince having fans coming 2 see him. The man needs a break and its time he live his life. I know I will be there having the time of my life. I love him in Vegas. Prince is a business man. He is able 2 call the shots because of his gifted talent. Doing business at the Rio was such a smart move on his part. Like I said I hit the hotels and the Rio is the place 2 be. For Prince mo money, mo money.

That price is not bad for Vegas, if that's what he intends to charge, but I guess we'll have to wait and see when it's official. http://www.joinred.com/ http://www.myspace.com/joinred [Edited 10/14/06 7:03am]
