I'd put it among Prince's top 10 songs. The arrangement is such a mix of warm/cold and the lyrics and vocals are quite heartfelt, especially for that point in his career. In the end, it's just my opinion, but that song is otherwordly great.

"otherworldly" perfect word to describe that awesome tune. nod

I love "Moonbeam Levels", it's a great song. sigh The melody, the piano, the way Prince sings it just makes it great.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

hmmm Not sure this can be quantified. Art is subjective.

For me, it speaks to the swirl of futility, lament and (most important) faith inside me.

Musically, it's classic early '80s Prince: Angsty lyrics, Linn drum, keyboard, slightly dissonant backing vocals. And the memorable, almost anthem-like refrain is hopeful, yet not as "churchy" as 1999's Free, which supposedly replaced Moonbeam Levels.

Great answer.

And I'd like to add it's not comepletly over blown and corny like "All My Dreams".

"All My Dreams" is candy wrapped in sex wrapped in the innocence of spiritual enlightenment.

All my dreams is just plain stupid. The song sounds like game show music. I don't see what ANYBODY thinks is so great about that song. What's next, a "Strays of the world" appreciation thread?

I love the hell outta moonbeam levels though. Maybe because the lyrics remind me a LOT of my ex.

"A Better Place To Die", I feel, is pure Prince. Meaning, I believe from 80 to early 84, this time period, P was in a zone that he has never been in since. He could see superstardom, but it wasn't achieved yet. And because of this, I believe, gave P super focus. During this period, the way P performed, like his very life depended on it. He truly recorded days on end, like he HAD to get all of this out before he lost it. It was an urgency going on in his music that simply was no longer there after Purple Rain. That said, "A Better Place" is part of that period. P's vision was so ....sharp during this time. Even sub par songs like "No Call U" was bangin'. There was magic working around P during this time and u best believe The Kid knew it. P made the decision to go with "Free", another beautiful song, over "A Better Place" for the 1999 album. Both songs are good, but obviously, they are way to similar. "Free" is more polished, songwriting wise. Plus, with the heavy gospel influence on "Free", vocally, it fit more with the vibe of his other gospel influenced vocal stylings through out that album. "A Better Place", as much as I dig the cut, was far more suited for a b-side. But, because it was so similar to "Free", musically, I think that's why P never released it as a b-side. Although, "Horny Toad" is very similar to "Delirious", so... I think "A Better Place" was a very personal song to P where as "Free" was more of a statement for society.

The lyrics alone make it great. The music is subversive, Prince doing a great rock tune. Historionic and powerful. Especially the chorus.

That's actually the part I can't stand.

I think the chorus is bangin'.

FruitToAttractBears is right. The verses are pure magic, but the chorus doesn't quite deliver (until it gets to the final "I'm looking for a better place to die" line). He was right to use Free instead of this.

If u read my initial post, I stated several times that not only should have P chosen Free instead, but I went on to state WHY he should have chosen Free. Still doesn't change the fact that I like the chorus to "A Better Place". I like "Horny Toad". Doesn't mean I think it's better than "Delirious".

I never said you didn't say that. I'm just explaining why I think he was right to use Free over Moonbeam. The verses are Prince at his very best, but the chorus isn't quite as special imo.

Moonbeam Levels has been one of my all time favorite Prince songs from the moment I heard it. At least for me, it's the perfect blend of a haunting melody and melancholy and introspective lyrics. The music has great dynamics in the way it builds and then eventually decends. I do think it would have been a hit if it were released way back when and would be considered an all-time classic track.

I also think it could be released today, untouched, and be a hit.
