Many Artists both black and white, are still slaves in the music industry.

That's just retarded logic.

Through recorded history people, jews blacks and others, were taken against their will and made to do labor. They had no choice to "sign" a contract.

Bullshit!

Pussy ass whinny bitch bullshit!

I'm quite aware of 'recorded' history.

However, the terms of many typical industry contracts are a form of slavery.

Of course, people have the choice to sign them.

People have a choice to smoke, a choice to take Cocaine, a choice to ingest Heroin. Whether they make a choice or not they are still a 'slave' to those substances.

Prince was pissed off. he had stuff he wanted to do, and was told he couldn't...and couldn't for a least another 5 years !! How frustrating must that be ?? Yeah, he makes a fortune, but as a creative person it must have been terrible.

...The Mobo's this year looked like an amateur event. It was so bad I couldn't watch for longer than a minute or 2. I felt embarressed just watching!

ok heres my thought on the subject. over time the meanings of words cant either alter or completely change a gud eg of this is gay u go back 100 years or even less and if u were gay u were just a happy chappy. so the word slave thats been around 4 even longer than the word gay is bound (no pun intended) 2 change or b watered down if u will over time. also if u say ure feet are killing u for eg the chances are they arnt they just hurt alot but u use the extreme 2 get ure point across. As a child if my mum was tellin me 2 do this and that she'd get the reply "im not ure slave", was i being offencive 2 every race thats been percicuted as slaves i think not i was just being a cheeky so and so 2 my mummy.
basicly slave has lost of different meanings 2 it which 1 prince was likening 2 is up2 him but im sure it wasnt 2 the "slave" cylinder that powers my brakes on my car lol
"OOOH I can't hold it, OOOH it's gettin all ova me!"

So you're say Prince was so stupid he didn't know enough to hire a lawer?

well he didn't when he signed the 10 year $100 m contract back in 1991. So I guess, yes at the time he was stupid enough not to hire a (proper) lawyer...

I wouldn't consider a slave someone who makes million dollars, no.

This is NOT to insult you, but POOR people don't get this. You can be a "slave" and make a great deal of money. It's NOT about the money. I don't mean it in a literal sense but if you have no control over what you do, you are a slave in a sense.

was it for 10 years? and the last contract was not singed until 92 or so... not until AFTER O+> came out....

but that kind of contract is not the same as a labor contract. hell prince did not have to do ANYTHING to fulfll the terms.

It wasn't 10 years, it was $100 million for 6 albums dependant on how well they sold. Of course Prince could have given them 6 albums and finish his contract off in one year, but Warners obviously insisted on getting the material and releasing it over a credible time period. But I wouldn't say being tied to a contract you willingly signed is the same as being a slave and constantly being forced to work against your will. Quite the opposite, Warners wanted Prince to slow down the work!

The MOBO's ain't shit anyway.
For goodness sakes, they took out the jazz award because Canya King is too lazy to realise that there are LOADS of musicians doing their thing in the UK but NOT GETTING SUPPORT. She'd rather turn 2 the US, like U guys ain't got enough awards ceremonies as it is.

I think Prince supports UK artists, cue Mica Paris, Monie Love, Kate Bush...

I can understand where he was coming from, every Black man in America should be able to. But i never understood why he had to write it on his face ALL the time.

He was doing it 4 sympathy.
Poor choice of word IMO.. Maybe 'DUNCE' woulda been more appropriate.
It's insulting 2 any instance of real slavery, and 4 those who weren't up with the hurdles in Prince's career, it would have made no sense at all.

Hmmm... no disrespect intended but that sounds like so much misinformed Bullshit!!!

Actually I have had the experience which is why I understand how this business works. Personal experience is the reason I can say that it is not slavery. It's business. It is ignorance of the contract you are signing. That's what record company execs bank on. They know the fu**** contract is slanted before you sign it and they hope you don't know enough about the business to realize it. That's why so many young artists get screwed. That's why they prefer young artists. Look how the industry has changed. It's very rare that anyone over 30 gets signed and there's a reason for it. If Prince knew he wouldn't have ownership of his masters, he could have made the informed decision not to give them up. Like most young eager artists, the only thing he was a slave to was his desire to be a star. Even if it meant signing a contract he didn't completely understand.

LIKE I SAID - IGNORANCE OF THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT OR NOT - WHEN U HOLD SOMEONE TO SOMETHING AGAINST THEIR WILL - ITS SLAVERY.

THAT BEING SAID - FORMULATED SONG-WRITING CAN BE PERCEIVED AS A FORM OF ARTISTIC DISCIPLINE - AND VERY HUMBLING - BUT WHEN THAT EXPECTATION OVER-RULES AN ARTISTS NATURAL INCLINATION TO CREATE FREELY - ITS WRONG. I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT WHAT A CONTRACT SAYS. ITS WRONG.

ARTISTIC FREEDOM LIES IN BOTH THE ABILITY TO SERVE AND TO CREATE FREELY. ONE IS NOT SERVING TRULY IF ONE IS NOT FIRST BEING TRUE TO THEMSELVES.

SLAVERY IS BEING FORCED TO SUBMIT ONE'S OWN FREE WILL OVER TO ANOTHER. IF U SUBMIT YOUR WILL OVER TO GOD - FOR EXAMPLE - THEN SPIRITUAL SLAVERY IS ACTUALLY CALLED 'SERVICE' - AND IS DONE FRELY AND HAPPILY. BUT WHEN U SUBMIT UR WILL OVER TO PEOPLE WHO ONLY DO IT FOR THE MONEY BECAUSE THEY GIVE YOU NO HUMANE OPTION OUT OF PRIDE AND GREED - THATS SLAVERY.

LAST TIME I WROTE A FORMULATED POP SONG - I FELT LIKE I WAS DEAD. AND I SO DEEPLY RESENTED THE 'INSTRUCTOR' WHOSE NARROW SCOPE OF CREATIVE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION WAS UTTERLY REPUGNANT TO ME - I PAID HIM BACK FOR IT BY FORMULATING A FUCKING NUMBER 1 SONG. IT AINT THAT HARD. AND WHILE HE STRUTTED AROUND BELIEVING THAT ALL GOOD SONG-WRITERS LIVE IN AMERICA - I PROVED HIM WRONG. THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET MY DIGNITY BACK.

HE MADE OUT LIKE ITS THE HARDEST THING IN THE WORLD TO WRITE A SLAMMIN GOOD POP SONG. I MAINTAIN IT IS HARDER TO WRITE FREELY - BECAUSE TO DO THAT - U HAVE TO BE FREE!! AND SO MANY ARTISTS ARENT. THEY TRY TO CREATE WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THEIR OWN THINKING - WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE CONFINES OF THEIR OWN SPIRITUAL STAGE OF GROWTH. SO TO WRITE FREELY IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD AS BEING THE OPPOSITE TO SLAVERY - IS TO BE ENLIGHTENED. NO. MORTAL. RESTRICTIONS.

MUSIC IS AN EXPRESSION OF FIRST AND FOREMOST - GOD'S LONGING FOR MAN TO COME HOME. A GOOD SONG BRINGS YOU HOME. FORMULATED OR NOT. BUT A SONG CREATED UNDER TERMS OF SUBMISSION TO SOMEONE ELSE'S WILL - WILL NOT BRING YOU HOME - UNLESS YOU TAKE BACK THE POWER U GAVE AWAY - BY DOING IT SO WELL IT EMBARRASSES YOUR CONTROLLER.

PRINCE HAS ALWAYS THOUGHT WITH HIS HEART. AND WHILE THOSE OF YOU SAY IT WAS HIS OWN FAULT FOR SIGNING THE CONTRACT - YES THATS TRUE TO A POINT - AND HE LEARNED ALOT AND WAS ABLE TO TAKE THAT EXPERIENCE AND SHARE IT WITH OTHER IN THE HOPES OF TEACHING AN IMPORTANT LESSON.... BUT ULTIMATELY - WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM WAS WRONG FOR WHAT IT WAS. IF IT WASNT - THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO LESSON TO TEACH NOW WOULD THERE.

PEOPLE SAY ' THATS BUSINESS '. YES IT IS. AND THAT IS PRECISELY WHY MUSIC AND MONEY DO. NOT. MIX. TRUE MUSIC HAS NO SELFISH ALTERIOR MOTIVE. MONEY DOES. AND THAT MY FRIEND IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE.

COULD U BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD? YES INDEED I AM BABY PRINCE U GO ON WIT UR BAD SELF AND SHOW EM OVER AND OVER HOW THEIR TINY CREATIVE SCOPE CAN BE SO EASILY SERVED WITH A FORMULATED POP SONG THAT REQUIRES NO MORE EFFORT THAN FARTING. heart

MEANWHILE - BE TRUE TO EVERY MUSICAL EXPRESSION YOU'VE GOT AND SHOW EM THAT TRUE MUSICAL GENIUS LIES MAINLY IN THE PUBLICS INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND A WORD U SAY OR A NOTE YOU PLAY JUST LIKE MY MOZART. KEEP THEM REACHING AND SHOW THEM THE WAY HOME. I'LL TAKE IT FROM THERE LOL
