What was the last great funky ass beat Prince came out with? I'm talking 'bout the stuff that people are saying Timbaland and Pharrel are now owning him with. Not just funky music but tight ass grooves like Lady Cab Driver,DMSR or Controversy.
Opinions please... | |

last week he ate some bean spiced sulsa. A day later he came out with a funky ass beat.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I thought Family name had apretty cool beat...though John Blackwell may have had a hand in that. "Don't hate me cos I'm beautiful"

Hmmm. That's a pretty good one but personally, it's not quite in the league I'm looking for.

I can only come up with beats and the last song that got me in that vein was Black Sweat. The beat is sweet. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Black Sweat beats the hell out of most of the newest Pharell or Timbo beats. Don't get me wrong, they're hella talented, and did own him in their best period(2000-2005) but now I think it sounds like they're recycling alot of their old material, and Timbo is both recycling himself and Prince at the same time on that new Timberlake record.

Lord have mercy!!! Are you people mad or what? You can not honestly be condensing Prince's artistic musical genius down to beats?
News Flash!! Prince makes M-U-S-I-C not beats!! Shameful, simply shameful!!

1. Who says Timbaland and Pharrel are "owning" Prince with? You? No one says that shit. Just because you prefer the way Batgirl's boobs look behind the bat symbol don't mean she's better than the original. 2. "3121" (especially live) eats Pharell and Timbaland for breakfast. Hell, Ready for the World's "oh Sheila" eat Pharell and Timbaland for breakfast. "New Power slide...."

Secondly, re-read my first sentence (the one you quoted by the way)and look at the several other posts talking about those guys and others making "better music" than Prince is right now. Rather than attacking me (thanks for using my quote by the way),realise that I'm being nuetral or if anything defending Prince by giving examples of the funk. 2.3121 live is da shit. I've never said anything contrary to that. Check your facts kid!Not everybody here is negative. [Edited 9/14/06 20:53pm]

3121 live is funknasty.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Comparing my best dish with an appetizer from a real chef is just as pointless as this thread. Nowadays, we call about everything that's an instrumental a beat. But I asume you're saying it's a major difference in programmed drum machine music with samples, and more organic and real music with real instruments. Prince did use drum machines at some point btw, and there's a bunch of classics out there that's been made with drum machines and samplers. I could name many songs.

-No matter who is drawing what version of Batgirl--she still pales in comparison to Batman. Same with Timbaland and Pharell. At their best their beats sound like recycled Prince beats. Old school Prince aside, there are beats on 3121 that are arguably better than Pharell or Timbaland. "3121" being one of them. 2.3121 live is da shit. I've never said anything contrary to that. Check your facts kid!Not everybody here is negative.
I know you are not being negative, but again, I ask you--who says Pharell and Timbaland are "owning Prince" with their beats? Seems like your point of view-negative or not.... "New Power slide...."

Calhoun Square comes to mind but there have been others since. I like the groove on The Word. And yes percussion or as some call it "beats" count as music. Imagine Black Sweat without drums and then you tell me if it should be considered as part of music. The thing about Timbaland and Pharell is their percussion sounds are not as diverse as Prince's. Imagine Pharell coming up with something like Hide The Bone or Calhoun Square or Rock Hard In A Funky Place. Pharell and Timbaland's beats are almost always very cold and poppish. Either they're like that or they're rip offs of P's beats like when Pharrell kept revamping and recycling the beat to Nasty Girl. Timbaland's beats all sound similar too.
