Did Prince create his own dance moves?

I know that some of it was influenced by musicicans he resepcted, etc. etc. Footage from his way early stuff is so outrageous to watch because I can really see how much he changed on the stage in terms of how he danced. Even just from the controversy years to 1999. He really tightened up his moves. My question is, did he do this all on his own? Or, has his dance evolution been aided by choreographers?

that post gave me a chuckle. Out of all the dance moves I've seen prince do that was one of the oddest choices to do in a filmed concert. When I watch it with friends a puzzeled look falls on their faces. I miss the days of old, I know he pushing 50 but he got some great classy moves that don't require splits on the one. Again thanks for the laugh

Come on christos7 do I detect some ditaste from our man. He's got some of the best moves I've had the pleasure to witness. As far as the drama is concerned he can be indeed a little overyly dramatic but that's what makes him so unique. I will admit the eyelid move is a bit too much but lets give him credit where credit is due. I love a lot of other musicains but when I see them in concert I am so bored meaning I rather listen to their cds at home or in the car. However your point is well taken wink

Prince has used a number of different choreographers over the years.

Oops! Sorry for the 1st post. eek

Probably his most signature moves were inspired or choregraghed by someone else:

When it comes to the splits, microphone handling, and footwork you'd probably say James Brown.

When it comes to the spins/twirls, hang time jumping off the piano, and that little jump in the air (with his legs working in rapid sessesion like scissors),...I tend to think he benefited from his dance lessons with The Minnesota Dance Theater that took place before the filming of Purple Rain.

But when all is said and done,...it's still Prince doing the booty shakin and signature moves and owning them as only he can! clapping

He's not really a "dancer". He's got some cool moves. The split and the spin were always favorites but those are borrowed from....well do I have to say it? James Brown as well as the microphone kick under the leg thing. Prince just moves like an entertainer. The closet thing he's done that I would consider choreography would be the "When Does Cry Video". That little side step thing was crazy cool back then.

Wasn't that around the time of his hip surgery? He seemed to be injured.

Or convalescing.

Prince used Paula Abdul. He gave her some songs for her album for some moves. Paula said this in a documentary on her that was on recently called "Dark Stars".
