was far enough away from it *not* to be too freaked out but close enough to *be* freaked out...in stockton.
i was actually on top of my grandma's garage (which has a mother-in-law house on top)...the entire garage started violently shaking...i was able to run down the stairs of the garage, see the street sorta waving...get freaked out and then run into the house (which is a huge old two story victortian home...what the heck was i thinking?...) luckly nothing happened... now the earthquack lasted less then a minute (if my memory serves right) but I will never forget the fear that I felt and how quick my ass ran when fear took over... the sad part was turning on the tv all alone and seeing the destruction the earthquake had caused in the city of SF and around it...the poor people on the bay bridge...i still cant cross that bridge without looking up and wondering... since moving to the bay area I have experienced one pretty strong earthquake...I can only hope we are all spared another one as big as 89. edit to correctly spell bridge.... I wasnt in the bay area when the quake happened. But I do have a Masters Degree in Earth Sciences and Geo-physics. While I was working towards my degree I studied quakes in California and I would just like to say that this quake could have been MUCH MUCH worse. The folks of San Fran have no idea how lucky they are. The San Fran quake of `89 and the Kobe Japan Quake of `98 were very similiar in many ways (IE strength of the quake, position of the quake, type of quake, soil type, local building codes, and population density). In the San Fran quake only 59 people died (I think) while in the Kobe quake over 6500 people lost their lives. My hats off to the folks in the Bay. PEACE!! My DC Direct wishlist: 1) Bane, 2) Prof Zoom, 3) Superman Blue, 4) Kilowag, 5) Parasite

I was at home which was in San Jose at the time, babysitting my two nephews. I grabbed them and we all duck under the dining room table. I was scared at the time only because it didn't stop as quick as the other ones I have experienced. I am not scared of earthquakes, and would still rather go through them instead of tornados and hurricanes.

I was in Downtown Oakland. You could smell the dust from the collapsed Cypress. It was surreal.

I was in the city auditioning for a tv show when the bdlg started to sway back and forth. we finally were able to get into our cars and try to get back home. Alot of downtown was dark cuz the lights were out. I've been in all the biggies of the CA quakes "May U live 2 C the Dawn"
