I'm a total Bitch for the O(+> Album lately

The album starts off with "My Name Is Prince", possibly the most brash, self-agrandizing song Prince ever released. When I listenned to it for the first time (MTV Premiere video) I was stunned. I couldn't beleive it was Prince.

Then when I went out and bought the album, songs like "7", "Damn U", "The Max" and "God Created Woman" blew me away. The instrumentation was terrific, the arrangements were great, and the songs were tight.

I never understood why it received fewer good reviews than D&P--it's a far better abulm, and one of Prince's great classic albums. Sure, the hip hop elements derail some of the songs (Prince, give up hip hop--you can't do it right!), but overall it's a vibrant alive album.

Awesme album. It gets so much unwarranted criticism and the Tony M raps really don't hurt any of the songs too much(except for My Name Is Prince).

i don't know what it is about both this album and diamonds & pearls,
but as much as i liked them in my teens, i dislike them now.

they truly are the two prince albums i listen to least of all, even
new power soul gets more airtime from me.

both of those albums lack a good flow imo, a cohesiveness and just
simply good songs.

the good songs are top notch indeed, but they're few and far between
and don't keep me interested long enough to sit the album out.

I hate this album. It's just a total mess.

Even the songs that start out sounding promising get derailed by really silly touches.

My Name Is Prince gets the tragically long Tony rap, The Continental gets that stupid bit at the end, Three Chains 'O' Gold has the lame bit about giving back the chains, Damn U gets saddled with that lame skit attached to the track, etc.

Almost every song gets ruined somehow, either by bad lyrics (a river of blood? GROSS!), poor new directions taken late in the songs, or both.

It also just has way too many songs that didn't need to be there, and the "concept" is a joke.

It's a self-indulgent mess.

nod

i think you'd be hard pressed to come up with a really good 8 song album
out of all that stuff. it's very hard to do.

compare it to an 80's prince album with 8 or max 10 songs and you quickly
realise that the amount of songs can't make up for the lack of ideas.

Actually, I didn't like the movie. I thought it was worse than UTCM and nearly as bad as Graffiti Bridge, although it was mercifully more a video montage than a movie. shrug

'Love Symbol' is Prince's best album of the 90s,IMHO.The music is vibrant and inspired...you can tell that Prince was having alot of fun recording this album. The album is filled with surprising arrangements and fresh ideas. For me,the highlights are...

"My Name Is Prince"---what a way to kick off an album!
"Sexy MF"---James Brown-inspired funk at it's best.I even like Tony's rap on this one.
"Love 2 The 9s"---a wild, rollercoaster ride of a song!! Very fun and adbventurous.
"Blue Light"---his best reggae-sounding track ever
"The Continental"---hard funk/rock track that sizzles. The ending is my favorite part ("tell me how you want to me done").Carmen's cameo rap is sexy!
"Damn U"---too beautiful for words
"7"---boasts the strongest chorus he's ever come up
"And God Created Woman"---how can anyone not like this song?! This is Prince at his absolute best.

The album is worth it just for those 8 songs! I challenge any Prince fan on this site to argue that those songs are crap lol Honestly,I don't think that Prince made a more satisfying album in the 90s.

I may be in the minority, but I don't mind Tony's raps on this album at all.In fact,I like his rap on "Sexy MF",and that fun little skit on "Love 2 The 9s" where he's interviewing Mayte. He also brings alot of life to "The Max".On the previous album ('D&P) most of his raps sounded pasted on,but here,it fits the songs perfectly.

I agree,it is a much stronger, more exciting album than 'Diamonds and Pearls'.It's also more funkier. You said it best: it's a vibrant, alive album. The music throughout is fast, relentless and ALIVE!! There are very few dull moments here.

i like '7' okay. i've never been a huge fan of 'and god created woman', though in recent years i've come to appreciate it. i'd love to hear a stripped down version of it. i think all the chaotic hip hop stuff at the end turned me off to the back end of the album. it just starts to feel bloated, especially with the song 'three chains 'o' gold', which i think is just excessive and silly.

I'm not that crazy about "The Sacrifice Of Victor".It has a powerful message, but it sounds chaotic and noisy.Prince should have closed the album with "Three Chains O Gold",that's a perfect finale.

Wow, I really didn't get the impression that Prince was having fun with this album at all. Infact, I got the opposite impression.

To me, prince is one of his most insecure and desperate sounding albums ever.

MNIP is just dripping of insecurities, and so many of the other songs sound flat out uninspired and excessively "busy." They're all really full of over the top touches, but there's little cohesive substance there.

I've always thought this album was one Prince's best works ever. The arrangements are awesome, and there's just so much good material on it. I really love 'Sweet Baby' (can't understand no one's even mentioned it!), 'Damn U', 'The Morning Papers', 'And God Created Woman', 'Sexy MF', and many others. The raps make it sound very early '90's, when everyone seemed to use these very deep Afro-American voices (Snap, Michael Jackson's 'Jam', etc.), but it doesn't ruin anything for me. In fact, I like the raps, even Prince's.

'My Name Is Prince' was the get off point for a lot of fans.

Prince himself has been critical off this album in the past.
