Question for newer fans bout Prince antics Can you "appreciate" the way Prince plays his little games with inuendos and numbers etc?
Have the newer fans become as engrossed as the old timers became in our time? At this point isn't it time to just deliver as much music as possible and not be concerned with trying to "manipulate" interest, especially when its not needed. I'm not talking about the quality of music, I'm refering to the process in him exposing it to us.

everyone here seems to be "old"
prince can play any game he likes. i do appreciate his sharing and giving effort. i think about him alot. i'm a fan he never manipulated my interest, he just is. nothing seems to change the fact. i'm not telling him how to do business, i'm not one to give advice. interms of quality, cd's out the window.. that's not in anyones hands. i'm in love what difference does it make? young, dumb, and no fun..

This is a very good question, origmd, as an old time, I'm looking forward to reading the answers. I really, truly don't think that the folks here who are 25 and under can truly understand what Prince was like back in the 80s (not his music, but his personality.) I sorta liken it to the way Eminem is seen today, controversy wise.

in my understanding 'riddles', encourage a person to THINK.
i learned alot about alot of things, simply by investigating the number 3121. its nice when an artist can provoke thought, in more ways than one, through their music.. imo. " the embassy shut to keep the fools out " - as above, so below.

Don't expect answers. Mythological creatures seldom ever answer questions. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I think it's fun.
Or am I not supposed to be interested by an artist who occasionally behaves strangely because Purple Rain is a year older than I? Sorry, wasn't aware only the old school fans had license to appreciate the lil nut's quirks. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Sorry, wasn't aware only the old school fans had license to appreciate the lil nut's quirks. Don't take offense. I'm an old schooler, and I'm pleased as punch that you "young uns" appreciate music at a deeper level than the drivel that the hit makers promote. Gives me hope for the future. But I think what origmnd was asking about is the persona, image and impact that Prince had 20 odd years ago. He had a way of playing the media, playing on people's preconceived notions and expectations. He created an air of mystery that caused people to delve deep into anything he did or said. Since he did very little in the way of interviews, we were left to investigate everything else he released : lyrics, album artwork, sound effects -- whatever, trying to find clues to give us a better understanding of what the hell he was saying. When he granted an interview to Rolling Stone, it was a big deal. Front cover with a huge headline of two words: PRINCE SPEAKS! Stop the presses! Today I think he's much less cryptic, both because he grants more interviews and has been more vocal than he was earlier. In fact, there for a while, I kinda wished he shut up and just let the music speak for him like he did earlier in his career. I don't think his lyrics are as challenging as they used to be or maybe they're less subtle than before. So the question is, can younger fans pick up on this aspect of Prince, or did you kinda have to be there? I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

So the question is, can younger fans pick up on this aspect of Prince, or did you kinda have to be there? I think you can pick up on it still. True, us kids don't have first-hand experience of "classic" Prince behaviour, especially now that he's been more vocal publicly. (if you can count repeating the same things like a broken record as being more vocal. he spoke more, but said about the same amount IMO) But hear enough of the older albums, watch enough of the older performances, and read the odd rare interview (or hell, be wild, read both of them!) and I think most could pick up on what made Prince the person so intriguing in the first place. Even now his quirks still shine through often enough. Try as he might, the lil guy's never going to be normal, is he? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

origmnd said: At this point isn't it time to just deliver as much music as possible and not be concerned with trying to "manipulate" probably. but he's still just a kid. when he accepts himself and shakes off all the conditioning, he might not feel the need to try so hard. or he might keep doin it cuz its fun, even if its patronising to people who were over the joke ages ago. the attention seeking antics of an 11 year old wear thin after 30 years i agree. it gets tiring, and embarrassing when u can see straight thru it. a laughing clown crying behind the eyes, like the kid at school who becomes a comedian to deflect the bullies. do the words accept yourself and grow up mean anything to some people, i dont know. mayb it just takes time, but for an elite egomaniac, at 48, i'd say u cant teach an old dog new tricks. ur only choice is to accept them for who they are, flaws and all, or move on to buying music from someone who doesnt drain ur energy with games. a good dose of compassion might help.
